Loops, Mosaics, Images and Patterns for mallet percussion ensemble and electric piano relies heavilyon repeated patterns and textures sustainable by these instruments. Loops is constructed from motifs establishedby each instrument. Each motif loops around, overlapping each other to create a musical texture. Mosaics and Images were begun after a reunion trip to Washington, DC. Mosaics recalls the jazz music of Miles Davis I would listen to it on hot summer evenings with the windows open. The Sketches of Spain album. Later I visited Barcelona the home of bothGaudi and Picasso. Images must have been a premonition. It was only after I saw the exquisite stained glass windows of the Gaudi Sagrada Familia that I was able to complete this movement. Patterns is just that. Changing patterns in my own fashion. A colleague suggested substituting a fourth marimba for second xylophone in this movement to provide a more mellow texture.

The poet, Bethany Swann, listened to his music and through that experience was able to create the lyrics that so perfectly flow in the songs – an impressive achievement. The nine-movement song cycle begins with In Memoriam, the most “pop music†sounding of the songs, with a simple lyrical line. Roses Through Barbed Wire follows – it is more aggressive and percussive with an active accompaniment to the voice. The third piece of the cycle, The Somnambulist, is in two parts: the first with long melodic lines over a minimalist accompaniment; the second, more chordal and lyrically active. The Struggle shows influences of “Americana†and has a purely instrumental middle section. The midway point of the cycle, Stained Glass, makes use of glowing chords in various modes. The sixth song is A Return, which contains thick textures and chordal accompaniment in support of the vocal part. Song of Returns introduces a slower pace and is imagined as an “impressionistic cowboy song†– if such a thing were to exist! The penultimate movement, Light Sources is a multi-part song having an ethereal middle section and an explosive instrumental ending. The cycle concludes with Northern Boundaries, which includes a hymn-inspired section at the end.

The Night Window is a hauntingly beautiful instrumental piece that features in Sam Mendes’ World War I film, 1917. The piece begins softly, with a gentle motif that evokes the stillness of the night. As the piece progresses, the music gradually builds in intensity and texture, whilst the camera slowly zooms in on the window, highlighting its beauty and fragility. The piece reaches its climax as Schofield gazes out of the window, and the camera pulls back to reveal the ruins of a once-beautiful town, now ravaged by war. The Night Window perfectly captures the sense of loss and devastation that war brings, while also conveying a glimmer of hope and beauty amid the darkness. A powerful piece of music that perfectly captures the emotions and themes of 1917.
