The underlying concept is that of dreaming.The first section, Dreaming, which is static and meditative in character, is further divided into several parts, which, looking at the processes of dream narrative, present, in addition to the initial theme, short melodies of lyrical/melancholic character, ready to interrupt before reaching a possible development, to leave room for further suggestions.The short themes are repeated several times, including in the final section, which is a reprise, condensed and varied from the first.By contrast, the middle section, Nightmaring, has a strongly contrasting character to the preceding one, rhythmically marked and searchingly percussive, sardonic in the variety of figurations employed in the different registers of the instrument.A technically intricate section that demands of the performer the choice of appropriate solutions, and closes with a frenetic accumulation of fragments. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488235). Artaria Editions AE379 The flute writing in Wanhal's quartets is a good deal less virtuosic than the solo writing found in Hofmann's quartets. The principal reason for this lies in the greater equality of part-writing and in this respect Wanhal's quartets are more modern and technically advanced than those of Hofmann. One prime example of this can be seen in Wanhal's adoption of the modern alla breve notation in first movements in preference to the fussy eight-in-a-bar favoured by Hofmann and others. There is also a greater emphasis on the development of thematic material although not to the same extent or intensity that one encounters in the composer's symphonies. In keeping with the conventional practice of the period the flute quartets were conceived to be played with a variety of possible instruments on the top part. The London publisher Welcker, for example, issued the Op. 7 set with the title page Six Quartettes for a / Hautboy or German Flute whereas Sieber styled them Six Quartetto Concertante / Pour une Flute au Hautbois. Copies of several works from the set are preserved in manuscript as string quartets and at least one work as a clarinet quartet. There is good reason to believe that the six flute quartets under consideration were conceived as a set and probably intended for immediate publication. They first appeared under Huberty's imprint in 1771 (as Op.8) and may have been composed reasonably close to the publication date. Whether Wanhal sent the works direct to Huberty is uncertain. It is very interesting to note, however, that Sieber issued the same works in a new edition the following year - it was announced on 28 January 1772 - and this seems to have been the basis for the later (undated) Welcker edition published in London and many of the extant manuscript copies.In the absence of both the autograph score and an authentic set of parts, this edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of the composer as transmitted in the Sieber print. A number of variants have been adopted from other sources, notably the Welcker edition, on the rare occasions where they appear more convincing than Sieber's text. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing from the source, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the present manuscript is inconsistent at in its notation of appoggiature ; these too have been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; text underlay, where confused in the source, has been corrected; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. I transcribed Contrapunctus I from the Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, faithfully respecting the work of the Great Maestro, intervening only to distribute the voices when impracticable by the individual instruments and to give some breathing space to the various performers. In fact, from 4 parts, I obtained 5 using a small doubling only in the final part.The choice to use 3 trumpets and 2 trombones, and not the more typical brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba), was dictated by the lineup I had available at the time I made the transcription. Luckily, the second trombone part fits perfectly with the original fourth voice (…except for one very brief point…).However, in the future, I don't rule out creating a version for the standard quintet too!On a didactic level, the choice of this piece was certainly ambitious, but the extraordinary thing is that through Bach's music (!!!) it was possible to address an enormous amount of musical nuances. This immediately fascinated my students, both young and old, who did not hesitate to get involved with all their strength and I must say that, at the end of the study path, each of them achieved a clear improvement both technically and, above all, expressive.But then it's no surprise, Bach's music is always extraordinary and surprising!The structure of the transcription is therefore the original one and the duration is around 2 minutes and 45 seconds. To the expected parts I also added that of the horn in F, replacing the 3rd trumpet. At your discretion, of course, decide whether to replace it or double it directly.Also in this case, the audio is made with the synthetic sounds of midi, therefore not particularly captivating, but it should still be useful for getting an idea of the arrangement and for studying the individual parts.Good music!am.

The song uses very repetitive rhythmic patterns to make beginner guitar players feel comfortable, but offers challenges in the melody lines that complete the harmony, as they shift into higher positions on the fretboard. There are also two guitar solos that aren't overly technically challenging to your more ambitious players. Even though the title suggests it would be a delightful addition to your winter concert repertoire, White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes is a fun and accessible piece to play all year round.

This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: “La Cucarachaâ€, “Cielito Lindoâ€, De Coloresâ€, and “Mexican Hat Danceâ€, all available here (soon).
