Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF183). 9 x 12 in inches.The clarinet is my instrument, and I think the two greatest works in its repertory (and two of the greatest of all chamber works) are the quintets for clarinet and strings by Mozart and Brahms. In writing for this combination of instruments, I borrowed ideas shamelessly from both.I would describe the style as folk-inspired classical chamber music. The melodies are song-like or dance-like; the harmonies are simple, modal, and consonant. The time signatures of the three movements are 7/8, 5/4, 7/8 - unusual in classical music but common in the folk music of some eastern European countries. The texture is homophonic in some places and contrapuntal in others, always with at least one melody, often with more than one. The clarinet is not treated as a solo instrument but is integrated into the ensemble.The first movement is in sonata form. As in the Mozart and Brahms quintets, it begins in the strings, with the clarinet entering a few bars later on a rising arpeggio. The first theme is song-like; the second theme is dance like. The movement ends quietly on a phrase from the second theme. The form of the second movement begins with a song for the cello, repeated in the clarinet. The next section features a dance-like melody in the second violin, repeated in the clarinet with a descant in the first violin. Then a brief section in the minor, featuring the viola, leads to a repetition of the song that opened the movement, this time in the viola, repeated in the violins and the clarinet.The third movement is a set of variations on a brisk, dance-like theme. After several variations, including two in the minor mode, the tempo slows to adagio for the next-to-last variation (as in the last movement of the Mozart quintet). That variation features a duet for the first violin and the clarinet (as in the slow movement ofthe Brahms quintet). The final variation returns to the brisk tempo and brings back the melodic figure that ends the first movement. A brief coda on this melodic figure concludes the piece.

The piece closes with a vocal refrain accompanied by tuba, clarinet, and an improvised jazz trombone obbligato. In view of Schumann’s illness, however, Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will, Joachim prohibited the first performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work, the premiere was brought forward to 1937. The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’), the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version of Schumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.

The Carnival of Venice is based on a Neapolitan folk tune called O Mamma, Mamma Cara and popularised by violinist and composer Niccolo Paganini, who wrote twenty variations on the original tune. He titled it Il Carnevale Di Venezia, Op. 40. In 1829, he wrote to a friend, The variations I've composed on the graceful Neapolitan ditty, 'O Mamma, Mamma Cara,' outshine everything. I can't describe it. Since then, the tune has been used for a number of popular songs, such as If You Should Go to Venice and My Hat, It Has Three Corners. The tune was also used as an endless song in Australian schoolyards: A doggy stole a sausage, cos he was underfed The butcher saw him do it, and now that doggy's dead And all the little doggies, were very sad that night They built for him a tombstone, and on it they did write... – repeated, ad nauseam, to the tune of Carnival of Venice, sometimes only stopped by the ringing of the bell to return to class. The Flex Orchestra Series are arrangements that can flex to the instrumentation that is available in your context. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part. The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work. This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination. This arrangement for strings is easy and all set in first position in the key of E minor. A straightforward and simple setting to help students learn this classic hymn tune. The melody uses a theme and variations patter that includes an eighth note pattern with hooked bows, similar to patterns found in Suzuki Book 2.
