The fifth & sixth sonatas in A minor and E major of a set of twelve published in Rome in 1694 for 2 violins & cello or continuo have been arranged for flute, oboe & bassoon or cello. Each sonata has 4 movements and, while technically within the capabilities of players of intermediate standard, they require a more sophisticated level of ornamentation especially in the slow movements. An opportunity for a trio to develop their improvisational skills together, perhaps. First listen to good recordings of these pieces in their original scoring and imitate before experimenting with your own ideas.

It not only features a four-part harmonized version the melody, but also Joe Farrell’s complete original flute solo from Chick’s Light as a Feather recording (for three C flutes and alto flute). In addition, the arrangement incorporates both the original version of the song and famous riff, as well as Chick’s reharmonized and hipped up Akoustic Band version. It additionally includes improvised solos for piano, bass, and lead flute. If you have some good jazz flute players, or a sax section with talented doublers, they will love this chart! This arrangement is very challenging – it is certainly at a professional level of difficulty - but is also one of the coolest charts you will ever play.

Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in Bb lead-sheet format here, for tenor sax or other Bb instruments.) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track featured Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Description:Doubt & Determination bridges the gaps between musical eras, as one would hear certain nuance that dates back to the Baroque era but possess a rather modern musical structure. The piece challenges both the listeners and the player themselves. For the public ears, one will have to adapt the performer's perspectives to 'feel' the piece. As the title suggests, both 'Doubt' and 'Determination' are two human perceptions that oppose each other, to understand the music is to find common grounds between them, through unexpected cadences and dynamic change. The performer will have to deliver the technicalities of bringing them together, through detail instructions on dynamics and tempo change. The piece is modeled in Sonata Form. however, it is to be approached with indeterminacy, occasionally granting the performer the freedom through Tempo Rubato and Breath Perceptions.Practice Suggestion:This music can only prevail through expression, thus the commitment for dynamic is of the utmost importance. It is highly suggested to understand what makes this piece unique, a score analysis is always a good start. Mark out the accents (Staccato and Emphasis) and the tempo change. Establish breathing points since the piece has very minimal instructions for that, it is hence highly dependent on the performer's capability to deliver.A proper mindset is essential for the perfect performance.Instrumentations:Certain instruments are optional if a soprano saxophone is proven unavailable. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.738161). This is a sea shanty commonly sung on the ships between England and Australia by the wool and wheat traders. Though a popular folk song in Australia, its origins are unknown and was sung with different lyrics in many parts of the world. Verses could be improvised and extra verses added. It was also known as 'Rollin' King' or 'South Australia'. Here it is scored for piccolos and drums, but can also be played on fifes or flute. As this arrangement uses the call and answer feel of the men at sea, the first part often does the call and both piccolos do the answer. An alternative 2nd piccolo part has been included where the 2nd piccolo player also does the call for a fuller effect.

Kaplan has fond memories of studying composition with John Davison at Haverford College, where music majors received a copy of his book, Piano Music I. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always occupying a prominent place on the piano. The Introduction and Dance is by turns introspective and witty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The arranger recalls Davison explaining that the Dance reflected his experience improvising for a Morris-dancing group. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Several more of these arrangements have been (or will soon be) posted to YouTube and are available for purchase through SheetMusicPlus or SheetMusicDirect.Note that this quintet includes an optional piccolo part, for flautists who can double on piccolo.

Published by David Heywood (A0.910421). On a Slow Boat to China has been a favorite of jazz musicians for over 75 years because of its grooving melody and fantastic chord changes. In that tradition, here is a hard swinging arrangement for four flutes (Three C Flutes and Alto Flute) along with rhythm section. After a dramatic chromatic introduction, the groove is set by a bass ostinato pedal that helps the melody build to the second half. All four flutes have a shot at the melody before opening up for solos for everyone over these great changes. After the solos, there is a stop time flute feature where a written out line is passed back and forth between all the players giving the effect of a group improvisation. It finishes with the same high-energy ostinato pedal. The chart includes written out piano voicings and bass lines, along with an optional guitar part. At a medium advanced level, this chart is well within the reach of most doublers, and is a swinging addition to any program!
