Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1347457). Philippe de Vitry's Garrit gallus/In nova fert is significant in its historical and musical importance. Composed around 1315, it is one of the earlier works of the Ars Nova, marking a stylistic change in medieval music. The motet is complex, using multiple texts sung simultaneously, isorhythm, and unusual harmonies, which required a new notational system of red ink coloration to indicate the duple. The motet's text is drawn from the opening lines in the two top voices, and it is suggested that it makes a statement about the exile of French Christians, similar to the Jews from their homeland in the Old Testament, and the corrupt leadership at the time. It may make a strong political statement about the corrupt leadership at the time, as it is part of the Roman de Fauvel. This animal fable satirizes the political situation in Paris.Philippe de Vitry, a French composer-poet, bishop, and music theorist, is known for his significant contributions to late medieval music. In the last decade of his life, from 1351 to 1361, he served as the Bishop of Meaux, near Paris. This appointment was the crowning event of his court and church career. As a bishop, Vitry's accomplishments were primarily in the musical and literary domains. He was an innovative and influential composer, widely acknowledged as a leading musician of his day, and his treatise Ars Nova became a rallying cry for all modern composers after about 1320. Additionally, he was known for his French poetry set to music, creating a new style of song, anticipating the work of Guillaume de Machaut. While his tenure as a bishop was relatively short, his lasting impact was in music and poetry.

The song first appeared on the 1969 various artists' charity compilation album No One's Gonna Change Our World and later, in a different form, on their 1970 album Let It Be, the group's final released album. One night in 1967, the phrase words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup came to Lennon after hearing his then-wife Cynthia, according to Lennon, going on and on about something. Later, after she'd gone to sleep – and I kept hearing these words over and over, flowing like an endless stream, Lennon went downstairs and turned it into a song. He began to write the rest of the lyrics and when he was done, he went to bed and forgot about them.

Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.
