This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to the Dance Masters which presented 44 of my favourite Renaissance Dance band tunes and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited 22 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances. You can hear all the pieces and their chords on YouTube together with contemporary art and historical background material:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNSAs a help to those less confident in playing harmony lines, I have provided links to playlists of videos online for each part of each piece. You will hear the selected line on its own with chords and percussion, with the melody line added on repeats. The final repeat includes the other harmony lines, but the featured line is slightly louder in the mix. The performance starts with a percussion beat introduction to set the tempo.Who were the Publishers and the Dance Masters? What did they do? Sometime around the 1500s, the popularity of dance music exploded in Europe. Dance Masters were collecting chansons and dance tunes from courts and rural parts and were teaching these to new audiences, spreading their arrangements and reflecting the performance styles of the areas from which they had collected the tunes. Publishers were able to take these tunes that were becoming known across the regions and nations and spread them even more widely, thanks to technological innovations in music printing which made it quicker and therefore cheaper to produce collections of these dances in four or more parts. These publishers were often highly accomplished composers in their own right, who were both able to provide distinctive harmony lines and compose new tunes in the style of their sources, feeding the courts with enduring tunes. Composers and printers of this time would often use note values that are double the length of those we would be used to seeing today, and so to make this version more readable, breves have become semibreves or whole notes, semibreves have become minims or half notes and so on. Working with this publication For those just starting out in Early Music, the volume is an ideal introduction, since the ensemble can build from a soloist with accompaniment with the chords alone, and parts can be added in as additional musicians become available. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

David Hedrick with the subtitle Remembering the Lives of Mothers. It is dedicated to the composer's mother and is a commemorative piece for all mothers who dutifully led their lives and enriched the lives of others. It is an 8 minute work and requires a Harp (or Piano), solo oboe, solo English horn, bassoon solo, and the usual orchestral instrumentation (included). The composition is elegantly written in for sections or moods: 1. A Journey of Fulfillment; 2. Struggles on the Journey; 3. Peace; 4. The Journey Home. The composition is Romantic in nature and will create mental images for the audience and help them reflect on the lives of their own mothers or other important women in their lives. It is suitable for any orchestral concert venue, contests, and festivals.

Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

“These are written-out improvisations that were a part of the Good Friday noon liturgy at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easyâ€, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.†The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy†from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.â€-David CherwienThis unified set represents nine Stations of the Cross, but the pieces can also be used individually as preludes, hymn introductions, or worship interludes. Turner’s The Sun Setting Through Vapour was my inspiration because of the different layers and zones of interest which influenced my composition’s structure. The central focus of the painting is the setting sun in the central background of the work. The reflection of the sun draws the eye into the foreground and the market scene in the front right zone. This created the first section of my composition, the idea of the sun setting through the vapour before revealing a market scene which then fades back into the atmospheric sun setting through the vapour. The second section moves to the story of the Napoleonic War ships in the middle and backgrounds of the painting using percussion. Reflecting this the section centres around the narrative of a naval battle; the manoeuvring into position and flexing of strength; the pre-battle planning; the calm before and finally the battle itself. The third section draws together two aspects: the sun setting and the prison ship, drawing us from the aftermath of the battle to the journey back to shore showing the juxtaposing emotions of the imagined victorious British (the piccolo) and French prisoners (the cello). Closer to shore the vapour descends and we hear inflections of the market before returning to the sun setting through the vapour with the harbour clock (Tubular Bells) grounding us in real time.

Strohm, is a combined setting of two other works, Dialogue and Trilogy in a single concert piece. This setting is scored for a 10-part brass ensemble, comprised of two brass quintets, one using tuba and one using bass trombone.Combining the two works makes the resulting work an ideal brass section concert showcase. Opening with a hard-hitting, four minute, straight-ahead jazz movement with trumpet solos, the work follows with a lovely chorale-like 3/2 movement that lasts another four minutes. Then comes a powerful three-and-a-half minute incantation, which bursts into a two-and-a-half minute dance in 7/4. The work is solid brass, rewarding for both performers and listeners. Four Reflections is both demanding and exciting, perfect for recital or concert. Level of difficulty is Medium-Advanced, and total performance time is 14:10. Member, ASCAP.

A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and bands of around 2nd to 3rd section, although still possible with 4th section bands. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1102258). 18/04/’21: A Reflection is written as a tentative expression of the tumultuous emotions experienced by the composer, upon watching so many landmarks of their home be threatened or destroyed by the fire which ravaged Table Mountain on the 18th and 19th of April 2021. The most impactful symbol of this tragedy is, for the composer, the heart-rending body of images showing the Jagger Reading Room ablaze. The score expresses the composer’s experiences in a collage, drawing from C. Debussy’s La Cathedral Engloutie and W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in evocation of the emotions surrounding the burning library, and enacts them in a three-part narrative. The opening is articulated as a collection of sporadic outbursts heard against a slower melody and a rising bell motif. This is an evocation of the shifting uncertainty of the early hours of the fire shortly after it had consumed the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. This slowly becomes the evocation of horror and dismay that characterises the second section, as the fire takes hold of Mostert’s Mill, various parts of the University of Cape Town forcing students into a full evacuation of their residences, and eventually the Jagger Reading Room. The finality of the second section’s ending is followed by the muted resignation and mourning of the third and final section. The slowed melody from the first section returns, without the frenetic outbursts. All the listener is left with is the certainty of what has happened. The melody tries to rise to triumph, as the fire is held back from any further destruction, but ultimately falls back down and limps its way to an unsatisfactory and inconclusive closing statement.
