SPRING CALLS - for Soprano, Flute, Viola, Cello and Harp (2006) DURATION: 10:30 Minutes TEXT: Canticles 2; 1-13 (also known as The Songs of Songs or Shir Hashirim LANGUAGE: Hebrew TEXT CHARACTERS: Latin PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: Spring Calls for soprano, flute, viola, cello and harp is a setting of texts from the second chapter of Canticles (Shir Hashirim) book, known also as The Song of Songs. It is one of the five Megilot - sacred scrolls that are part of the Hebrew Bible. Canticles is mainly being read in Passover, the holiday of spring. Its theme is love and rebirth of love, symbolized by the spring. Usually, only one or two lines of Canticles texts are being set to music. However, I had an interest to create a sort of journey as well as a psychological journey of a woman who searches, awaits and discovers her love. The text parallels the awakening of love with the awakening of spring in a most vivid and colorful way. While choosing instrumentation and musical language to with work, the modal, archaic sound mixed with the new was in my vision. Therefore, one can hear colors of certain exotic and primeval instruments such as the sistrum - an ancient Egyptian percussion instrument, dated from 2500 B.C. used mostly for religious ceremonies. Spring Calls was written for Close Encounters With Music, Yehuda Hanani - artistic director. It was generously commissioned by Lola and Edwin Jaffe with deep appreciation to their support. The original version was for flute, clarinet and Guzhen, which is one of the traditional instrument of China, the origin of Japanese koto instrument. Then it’s been arranged again for flute, clarinet, vibraphone (sounded as suspended cymbal), and piano. It includes nine small paragraphs, also, there are three independent tone-series in the flute, clarinet, vibraphone and piano to each paragraph. I produced the particular colors and designed to use different techniques to with each paragraph, and it also has blurred and delicate relationship.

This is a song composed for a poem of the Chinese classic style called as Xin Yuan Cun (The Spring Comes to a Delightful Garden) - Snow, written by Mao Zedong in February of 1936. But, it was not published until Mao went to Chongqing in 1945 to hold a peace talk with Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek). It was said that the poem was sent to Mr. Liu Ya-zi as a gift. Mao and Jiang had been deadly enemies in their whole lives. Mao defeated Jiang the finally in 1949 and founded the People's Republic of China. Translated in English by Johnson K. Gao in 2008 at 71 years of age in DallasTexas, USA. The translator had not been born when the poem was written. Gao had composed a song for that Chinese poem. In the early 1940s, The Van Wert (north-western Ohio) Woman’s Club would invite “famous†people to speak to the assembly. It is believed that after learning that Van Wert had a huge peony cultivation festival running since the early 1900s, Meredith wrote this song. One of the first recordings was in 1949 by Danny Kaye; the orchestration was for winds, brass, percussion, and piano. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing! In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite.

It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Cuckoos are quiet reminders of spring when they first appear at the Marsden, United Kingdom area where they have a Cuckoo fair every year. Their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate as their numbers slowly decrease. In the music, the cuckoos in the 3rd clarinet part get progressively sad sounding and simply disappear. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a Clarinet Octet; 1 Bb Clarinet solo, accompanied by 4 Bb Clarinet parts, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet parts, and 1 Bb Bass Clarinet part. The Soloist has the melody throughout. The other Clarinets and Alto Clarinets have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Bass Clarinet sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced Clarinet ensemble sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument.
