Each Violin part is for beginner/intermediate Violinists, with Violin 1 and 4 having slightly harder parts as a challenge. The Cello part is fairly easy for beginners who can hold a steady beat. There is a section for the Cello to double stop, but you can always just play the bass note if you're not confident in double stopping. This is a really really fun piece to play with your ensemble, we performed this at a concert and had toes tapping!

They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.Also appearing in the publication Chording to the Consort, this individual piece is presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines. Wold Meridian editions of these pieces have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible. Chords have been provided so that the piece can be performed with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment. Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. The inspiration for this arrangement was from Deborah singing Were You There? Acapella in front of the Garden Tomb in Israel. This arrangement is for vocal solo/unison duet plus SATB chorus, acapella.Were You There? is a beautiful arrangement of a timeless traditional spiritual with rich harmonies. The chorus part can be performed with full choir or single voices. At the very end, it splits into six to eight parts, but can be modified for smaller groups. The chorus contains many oohs and ahs until the third verse. This is a modern take on a classic kids track featuring typical pop/rock chord voicing's over a constant F pedal in the left hand. Over the first section we get simple melody over a single note being played in the LH, before some more creative thinking takes over and the RH and LH work together to create melody, pulse, and harmony. There are some gorgeous chord voicings and interesting timing changes in this piece. We're sure your students will love it as much as we do.
