Published by Slide Ride (A0.784348). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instrumentsIf this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.799604). This short song was composed in 2012 during my doctoral coursework at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. It was written for tenor, but given its accessible range (Db4 to G5 in the original key), it would work well for lighter voices in many fachs, including light lyric sopranos, baritones, and mezzos. The text, translated from a poem by Takuboku Ishikawa (1886-1912), is gender-neutral. This would be a great introduction to new music for an undergraduate singer with strong aural skills and a still-light voice (since young dramatics might overpower the harp).If you'd like to talk about commissioning a transposed score, please get in touch! Transposition options will be a bit more limited with the harp than with the piano, but I'm sure we could make something work.Poem text (in English translation, as it appears in the score)Setting sun, Drifting clouds, New moon, Evening twilight, What do they matter to me?Composer biography:Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile composer, teacher, collaborative pianist, and music theorist currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently a PhD candidate in music theory at Indiana University, she recently completed a doctoral minor in composition, having studied with Claude Baker, Don Freund, P. Q. Phan, and David Schneider. She also holds a B.Mus. from the University of Michigan, where she studied composition with Bright Sheng and piano with Louis Nagel. Nicole's music has been heard across the world: along with numerous performances in the Midwest, her commissioned song settings of Muscogee poet laureate Alexander Posey's texts have been performed at Shorter College (GA) and Lincoln University (PA), and the Smithsonian Institution procured copies of two of these (Nature's Blessings and A Vision) to archive at the National Museum of the American Indian. Additionally, Nicole's viola duo Three Episodes was featured at Ball State University's 40th Annual New Music Festival in February 2010. Her early compositions have been garnering interest as well: music students in Kenya performed several of Nicole's such pieces in May 2013 through a pedagogical project spearheaded by IU faculty member Kimberly Carballo. Nicole's music also received its Mexican premiere in October 2013 with a performance of her Divertimento, written for the International String Quartet of Yucatán. In 2014, Nicole published a set of twenty short pedagogical pieces in uncommon keys, entitled Venturing Beyond, available on SheetMusicPlus. Also a sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Nicole frequently judges regional and divisional MTNA composition competitions at all levels, ranging from elementary to college-level Young Artists, and she also served as the composition department chair at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in 2014.
