Includes score and parts in various transpositions.Like many of Burnell's compositions this piece is suitable for homogeneous ensembles and also for mixed ensembles comprising atypical instrumental combinations or numbers of instruments. The instrumentation is not specified. The score shows clefs for parts 1-3 that suggest a string trio, but other instrument combinations are possible. Parts are available in a variety of transpositions and clefs. Players may change parts between movements or, where a movement or section is out of range, they may be tacet. Non-stringed instruments should interpret technique markings such as the pizzicato indications with appropriate articulation. The keyboard may be a piano, or any other keyboard instrument such as harpsichord, toy piano, electric piano etc. adapting the playing style to interpret dynamics, note durations etc. where these are otherwise not possible to achieve. If there is more than one keyboard player, then the players may alternate or double-up to emphasise the harmonic and dynamic structures. The movement titles may suggest possible instrumentations. Movement I: Engaged. Duration 2:15 approx. Movement II: Tightened. Duration 1:30 approx. Movement III: Feathered. Duration 3:45 approx. Movement III: Tamped. Duration 2:40 approx.Programme Note:The movements that comprise the three Acute Suites were composed between 2010 and 2016 and each may be performed by a range of different instruments. The use of the word 'acute' refers to the relatively high pitch of the instrumental parts. Acute Suite No. 3 is for flexibly scored ensemble in four parts . The movement titles of the third suite – 'Engaged', 'Tightened', 'Feathered' and 'Tamped' - reflect the characters of the movements.

The fourth trumpet never quite agrees with the other players! The second movement - Carillon - was prompted by the weekly bell-ringing practice in the composer's village. Rhythmic ensemble is not always quite perfect.... The scurrying third movement - Burlesco - uses material from the 'bells' of the previous movement, but in a very different way this time. A sense of key is never really confirmed and there is a bustling race to the finish. The Proclamation recalls the style of the opening Fanfare and provides a noble conclusion to this short suite. With echoes of each other's part, the four instruments compete confidently as the movement proceeds to it's triumphant conclusion.

Brass Magnolia Suite (1999) for trumpet, horn, bass trombone and percussion was largely inspired by Gary Powell Nash’s residency in Mississippi, the Magnolia State from 1996-2003. Being that Mississippi, particularly the northwest part of the state known to most as the Mississippi Delta, is very rich in musical traditions, Nash chose to use some of these same traditions as the basis and major premise for his composition. For the most part, Brass Magnolia Suite is based on Mississippi Delta blues tunes and bird songs of those indigenous to the region. Such birds include the mockingbird, wood thrush, common crackle and the meadowlark. For Nash’s utilizations of these bird songs, as well as blues tunes, he took rhythms and melodic contours of each and manufactured melodies and motives of his own. While Brass Magnolia Suite is not meant to be programmatic, the five movements, which are arranged in a traditional fast-slow-fast-slow-fast format, all depict either a particular experience for Nash or a natural occurrence in Mississippi. The first movement, Fanfare, is based on the mockingbird’s song. The second movement, Homage to the Armadillos, incorporates the song of the wood thrush. The third movement, Catfishery, is supported by the tune Catfish Blues and the common grackle’s song. The fourth movement, Song of the Meadowlark, is exactly what it suggests and the fifth movement, The Gospel, is based on the gospel blues tune John, the Revelator.

In the spirit of the time Blainville was a practical musician, composer, theorist, historian and, in some way, an encyclopedist. As practical musician and composer he was cellist and it is known that he played his own compositions at the Concert Spirituel in Paris, but neither his performances nor his compositions met with outstanding success.As theorist Blainville claimed the discovery of a third mode (mode mixte) between major and minor, unfortunately his harmonic theories did not have the expected success.As historian and encyclopedist we found his work Historie générale et philologique de la musique, published in Paris in 1767. The work is in consonance with other contemporaries works such as Rousseau’s Dictonaire de Musique (1768) or the Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne, published around 1780 by M. de Laborde and Pierre Joseph Roussier. As in these works, the work of Blainville broadly covers the musical knowledge, including theoretical-musical, stylistic, historical and ethnographic aspects. Framed in this last aspect we find a chapterdedicated to the music of the Turks. And it is in this chapter we find the musical pieces used in this arrangement.

St. Helens Suite for trombone and organ takes its inspiration from the hymn tune DUKE STREET (paired with the text “Jesus Shall Reignâ€) by John Hatton, who lived on Duke Street in St. Helens, UK. The suite was meant to have dual purpose as a concert piece and as music for worship services. Each of the first three movements contains fragments of the hymn tune. The first movement, Exordium, is built upon three main ideas that alternate, one of which is the second phrase of DUKE STREET. Aria dolorosa takes its opening melody from the musical motive which appears in bar 32 of the fourth movement, which was composed first. The first phrase of the hymn tune is folded into the Aria, but may not be recognizable because of its Dorian mode and slightly altered rhythm. The Capriccio ritmico is brief and quirky, showcasing some unusual tone colors on the organ, staccato technique on the trombone, and incorporates the third and fourth phrases of the hymn tune. Finally, the Toccata energica merges trombone melodies with toccata-style figurations in the organ, and the full hymn tune, though rhythmically altered, is finally heard in the second half of the toccata.

The final movement is marked 'Dolente' and features rich jazz harmonies in slow tempo. This is a great piece for large flute choirs to include in their repertoire; the inclusion of the largest members of the flute family gives a depth and richness to the chords that is in credible. The first movement is in the style of a French Overture with a moderate first section with dotted rhythm figures and a contrapuntal second half in a faster tempo. The second movement is a Rigaudon with its lively 2/2 tempo. It provides a nice contrast to the stately first movement with its lightness and more chromatic melodic material. The third movement is a Loure in 3/4 for the most part. The characteristic dotted quarter, eighth, quarter rhythm is present though it is often disguised. This is a very lyrical movement with lush harmony. The last movement is a Gigue with its 6/8 meter, wide intervals and contrapuntal writing.
