Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767472). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for Double Reed quintet 2 oboes, CA, Bassoon, ContrabassoonThe style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The contra leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Bassoon. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the Oboe 1 with an obbligato on oboe 2 before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabassoon and Bassoon. The middle section has a mournful Contra melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.

Dances of Peril is comprised of three movements. While they differ in their melodic, harmonic and rhythm languages, they are all fast, energetic, and unsettling. I imagine them as three peculiar dances in a small, mysterious party. While dance is often an act of joy and love, these dances are not. Scored for clarinet, violin, and cello, these dances involve three dancers; the relationships among them are unclear. Their motions are fast, sharp; at times, aggressive. The looks on their eyes convey suspicion. Each of them knows that something bad is about to happen, but they have to play the game. Like a good “whodunit†thriller, it is unclear who the source of danger is. And this uncertainly enhances the fear and pushes each dancer to move faster, to seize control, to deceive. Who knows how this will end.

A piccolo can be substituted for the recorder and the toy piano can be substituted with celesta or synthesizer. There are three movements that are about 7-8 minutes in total duration. The movement titles are 1. The Stroke of Midnight, 2. Mirror, Mirror, 3. Pixie Dust. Faerie Tale Dances is a three movement work depicting three different scenes of fairy tales. The first movement, The Stroke of Midnight refers to the story of Cinderella, specifically the ball. At the end of the ball, the clock strikes midnight (which is played by the toy piano) and Cinderella runs from the ball with the prince trailing after her. Following from the success of the Hits of the Renaissance for Strings, featuring well-known dances from Terpsichore by Michael Praetorius, this arrangement is from another classic book of dances from the same period. Pierre Phalèse (1510-1575) was a Flemish publisher and his First Book of Dances, an extensive collection of dances in four parts, was published in Leuven in 1571. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication of 1571, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. While you can add flute, recorder, oboe, glockenspiel or whatever you want, additional instruments are not essential but can add contrasting tone colour. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A piano is distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

The complete set arranged wind dectet and bass Romanian Folk Dances Sz. 56, BB 68 is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, BB 76. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania became part of Romania in 1920. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartók rarely ever used key signatures. This set of dances consists of six movements and, according to the composer, it should take four minutes and three seconds to perform, but most professional pianists take up to five minutes. The list of the movements is as follows (with the original Hungarian title listed first, the most commonly known Romanian title second, and the English translation in parentheses): Bot tánc / Jocul cu bâtă (Stick Dance)The melody of the first movement, according to Bartók, came from the Mezőszabad (present-day Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (present-day Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Tordaadministrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it. Brâul (Sash Dance)The second movement is a typical dance from Romania called Brâul, for which traditionally a sash or a waistband was used. This melody came from Egres (present-day Igriș), in the Banat region. Topogó / Pe loc (In One Spot)The third dance comes also from Egres (Igriș), but its theme is much darker and its melody recreates Middle Eastern instruments, such as the flute.[4] Bucsumà tánc / Buciumeana (Dance from Bucsum)The fourth dance came from Bucsony, Alsó-Fehér County (today Bucium, Alba county in Romania) Román polka / Poarga Românească (Romanian Polka)The fifth dance is an old Romanian dance similar to the Polka and comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuş, in Bihor county), near the border between Hungary and Romania. Aprózó / Mărunțel (Fast Dance)The sixth and last dance is formed by two different melodies: the first one comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuș) and the second one comes from the then named Nyagra (present-day Neagra) village within the Palotailva (present-day Lunca Bradului) commune. By the time Michael Praetorius published his extensive dance collection entitled Terpsichore (terp-SIH-cory) in 1612, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. These Three Gavottes are well-known and lively dances and sure to add some sparkle to any concert event. This piece is arranged for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments and percussion, with optional keyboard part.In this series, Renaissance Hits for Wind Instruments, some of the most well-known dances from Terpsichore are included. They are all attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts or end-of-semester events. They are fairly easy to play too. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by all sorts of non-standard ensembles. The keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. There are separate parts in various transpositions. The optional keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible the keyboard player should improvise around the part and chords shown. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option.The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a small bass drum or hand-held drum, clave or small headless tambourine. Published by Ndodana-Breen (A0.928493). Migration, dislocation and exile have always been key themes in the historical narrative of the Black experience in South Africa. These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the gaillarde (or galliard) was a popular dance and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I of England. This is the 5th dance in a set of 20 gaillardes in the original publication. The title means “If to love youâ€, or “Whether to love youâ€. This arrangement is scored for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments with optional percussion and keyboard parts. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by non-standard ensembles.
