This arrangement has two distinct parts: The first, lyrical part reproduces the original song, is a chance to really exploit that warm trombone sound. The second part is an up-tempo variation on the song and represents a stark contrast to the first part, requiring fast, tight playing. As usual in my arrangements, each player has the lead at some point. And the bass trombone will need to drive that rhythm in the second part in particular, keep the whole thing together. Â This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr. Â Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955729). Blue Moon is best performed by not telling your audience what is coming! Many listeners will be unfamiliar with the almost recitative-style opening that follows the four-measure intro. So when the well-known tune is finally heard at measure 23, some at least will be pleasantly surprised. But don’t decorate the melody too much here; just enjoy it as it is, let that warm trombone sound shine through! The 2nd trombone can decorate the melody a little more from measure 31 onward, but don’t let any swing feeling creep in before measure 38. You may wish to speed up a bit more than I have indicated at measures 47 and 62, but don’t play the swing sections too fast – this is not an up-tempo version. Just strengthen the swing feeling a little each time. This piece will test your quartet’s ability to play an easy swing really tight – especially when the melody is being pulled around, the lead player is playing a little behind the beat. As is usual with my arrangements, every player has the lead at some point, and maybe the chance to introduce a few of their own ideas. This arrangement gives you plenty of opportunity to exploit those all-important trombone characteristics: slide vibrato, bends, and smears, but above all, a warm sound!Listen to a full-length licensed recording on SoundCloud:

You Stepped Out of a Dream is an exciting new samba arrangement of this familiar jazz standard for flute choir (piccolo, C flutes 1-5, alto and bass) with rhythm section (piano, bass, and drum set). The unique feature of this arrangement is that the piece opens with the flutes coming in in layers imitating the instruments of the Brazilian batucada, a substyle of samba that is made up of percussion instruments, along with the drum set. The melody is then presented with tight, crisp jazz harmonies, and opens up to a piano solo with flute backgrounds, and optional parts included for jazz flute soloist(s) as well. This is followed by a chorus of written out flute solis with the group split up into three groups that all finish together in time for the melody again. The piece finishes with an open repeat of the entire group playing the batucada rhythms with the drums, and a chance to get the audience involved with clapping or even dancing. Add the excitement of Brazilian Samba to your next concert!

The piece closes with a final chord instead of a long fade out, but it's a big piece with a big sound and it runs for nearly four minutes at the recommended tempo.There are two bass parts in this edition - one in treble clef and one in bass clef...The arrangement works well with 4 guitars, but a larger ensemble will find it easy to get much more drive and power! In a large ensemble, the syncopated rhythms need to be tight and accurate if they are to provide a compelling rhythmic support to the tune.It’s worth mentioning that the name Fleetwood Mac derives from the group’s founder, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (Mac), their bass player. Why tell you that? Because the Guitar 4 part is a close representation to the original bass line played by John McVie, and what a fantastic bass line it is! The two bass parts (treble clef and bass clef) are identical and between them, they suit guitar, contrabass guitar, electric bass or double bass. For a fuller sound in a large ensemble, one can place a guitar or two alongside a bass instrument.The standard across the parts varies from intermediate to advanced intermediate, so it's great for an ensemble of mixed abilities.I hope you enjoy this piece!
