Here is my 1976 Oratorio on Winnie the Pooh (Poohratorio) for alto voice, spoken parts, guitar and various optional other instrumentsGreat fun for young and old. It uses the whole of Chapter 8 of A A Milne's Now we are six -The expotition to the North Pole, which is now in the public domain in the USA.CHAPTER 8 ...IN WHICH CHRISTOPHER ROBIN LEADS AN EXPOTITION TO THE NORTH POLEONE fine day Pooh had stumped to the top of the Forest to see if his friend Christopher Robin was interested in Bears at all. At breakfast that morning (a simple meal of marmalade spread lightly over a honeycomb or two) he had suddenly thought of a new song. It began like this:Sing Ho! For the life of a Bear.When he had got as far as this, he scratched his head, and thought to himself That's a very good start for a song, but what about the second line? He tried singing Ho, two or three times, but it didn't seem to help. Perhaps it would be better, he thought, if I sang Hi for the life of a Bear. So he sang it . . . but it wasn't. Very well, then, he said, I shall sing that first line twice, and perhaps if I sing it very quickly, I shall find myself singing the third and fourth lines before I have time to think of them, and that will be a Good Song. Now then:Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! I don't much mind if it rains or snows, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice new nose! I don't much care if it snows or thaws, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice clean paws! Sing Ho! for a Bear! Sing Ho! for a Pooh! And I'll have a little something in an hour or two! He was so pleased with this song that he sang it all the way to the top of the Forest, ... etc.

Regardless of your opinions on the handling of the Covid pandemic, there is no doubt that healthcare workers worldwide have had a lot to deal with over the past two years, and deserve our respect and support. This piece is a fanfare celebrating their courage and commitment throughout, as well as a bit of commiseration for the hardships and heartbreak they endured during this difficult time.

FOREST TALES is a collection of 10 pieces that aim to acquaint classical guitar students with the unequal time signatures most commonly used in Bulgarian folk music  (starting with 5/8, all the way  to 15/8). Each of the pieces is aimed at mastering a certain technical element: the ‘Little Spider’ stretches the threads of its cobweb through a descending legato to an open string, ‘Dr. Woodpecker’ takes care of the bark of the trees through various percussion techniques, the ‘Fireflies’ glitter with the sound of natural harmonics, and so on.All musicians all over the world are familiar with dance forms like alemande and sarabande, menuette and waltz, tango and rumba, but how many of them are familiar with the different Bulgarian types of 'horo' (ring-dances)? Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942072). Rush Time was composed for two pianos in 2001 after a commission by the Rivers School in Music in Massachusetts, U.S.A. An exciting and friendly for performers and audiences work by Apostolos Paraskevas. Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release.As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. This series focuses on learning by doing; there are many accomplished performers within our school classrooms throughout the world, but my years of experience has taught me that many of these students learn to play by rote – literally be learning one note followed by another – without gaining full understanding of how the pieces work musically and theoretically. Indeed, some of them can perform to a high standard using this method, but then really struggle with composition and general musical understanding later in their educational careers.I equate this to learning to speak sentences in a foreign language without fully understanding what those sentences actually mean.So who is this book for?It is for music teachers to use with their students who are learning to create exam-level compositions within a school environment. Johann Jacob Froberger (May 18, 1616 – May 7, 1667) was a German Baroque composer, keyboard virtuoso, and organist. He was very well known during his lifetime, and modern scholars consider him to be one of the most important keyboard composers before Johann Sebastian Bach. The Ricercare No. 13 and Fantasia No. 1 for Four Euphoniums (or Three Euphoniums and Tuba) arranged by Ralph Sauer are two wonderfully composed contrapuntal works that are a joy to perform. They are possibly the best works from a collection of his numerous keyboard compositions.
