Debussy's Arabesques are considered to be one of the earliest expressions of French impressionism. They are a suite of two piano pieces that contain hints of Debussy's developing musical style. Although they did not receive much attention when they were first published, they are now regarded as early impressionist standards. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys, achieving evocative scenes throughout both pieces. The Arabesques are important in the history of music as they represent a significant development in the impressionist movement.Claude Debussy was a French composer born in 1862 who developed a highly original system of harmony and musical structure that expressed the ideals of the Impressionist and Symbolist painters and writers of his time. He is considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Debussy's compositions, including his orchestral poems and piano music, helped establish the musical language for much of the twentieth century. Critics often credited Debussy with pioneering a genre called impressionism, although Debussy consistently rejected the term. Debussy's best-known musical arabesque is his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (1894).

These Vassar Miller poems present two views of death. The first, Momento Mori, is morbid and the setting is very dramatic. The second, Old Dog, is more optimistic. Both require a strong pitch sense of the singer as the intervals are angular. The piano part supports the singer at times and is more independent at others. The timpani part adds color and drama.

ISBN 9790570483686.In classical times, Bucolics were a collection of pastoral poems, particularly those by Virgil. This piece attempts to show off the rustic and plaintive character of the oboe and evoke a pastoral arcadia. The piece is in ternary form, with a sprightly middle section in 12/8 in F major contrasting with a slower more wistful outer section in 3/4 in five flats. The piece starts with a long sinewy solo phrase for oboe alone, improvisatory in nature, which eventually settles on a high Ab, which the piano then supports with a single chord. Two more long solo oboe phrases follow, each gravitating to the same high Ab, each answered by a single piano chord that gradually becomes more dissonant, until the piece dissolves into the dance-like middle section, filled with wicked cross rhythms.

There is a restatement of “Lead, Kindly Light†from movement 4, transformed a bit, for soloist with choir accompanying, then the choir sings this material in unison in a powerful, climactic passage. “Requiem aeternum†from the first movement is heard again here with a gently pulsing accompaniment, and the work ends quietly “Luceat eis.†Duration 8:59.

The tenors and basses (divisi) begin this movement, declaiming “Dies irae, dies illa.†Two soloists begin in the “Flanders fields†text above. There is an option for three soloists as the piece evolves. (Soprano, tenor and baritone, the composer gives some options for this.) Soon the choir takes up the poem, yet the Latin text occasionally appears and continues, moving toward a climax on the text “We are the Dead, Short days ago We lived.†As the music descends from the high point, the English poem continues, with the choir very softly commenting “Dies irae†as the movement ends.
