He was simply one of millions in the vast American workingclass, one who was known to jot down a poem or two now and then.Here we have six examples of his work, poems which he wrote for his childhood sweetheart whom he waited fifty years to marry. Maxwell’s great grandson asked me to set these poems to music saying, the poems illuminate a picture of life in the American midwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His poetry serves as a lens through which we can view his . . . youthful romantic view of nineteenth-century prairie life.Since the poems are so imbued with nostalgia and 19th century romanticism, I endeavored to set them with an equally strong sense of the classic art song tradition.Curiously, these songs feel longer than they actually are. There are many pieces about which one could say the same thing with less charity, but in this case it’s a good thing: the poems are quite short (the longest is only twelve lines, the shortest only four!)The entire cycle lasts just under 12 minutes. The audio sample includes most of one song (A June Night) and all of a second (Have You Found a Place?). These are enough to give you a sense of the whole cycle.

They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. The English lyric, as with the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. The arrangement is for two voices and guitar where the guitar part is challenging but vocal parts are not.

Many years ago I wrote a song about looking in the personal ads, imaging four rather different individuals searching for their ideal partners. The effect is comic but also a bit sad. At the suggestion of a cellist friend of mine I have created an additional cello part for it, added a couple of little solo passages for her and some moments (pauses and cello chords) for optional histrionic expression on the part of the performers. Two versions of this are avaialble, one with piano and one with guitar accompaniment - the accompanying styles are rather different between them, so I have published them separately. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.

The first movement is set in Eva Tanguay’s voice and works well dramatically for mezzo-soprano. Eva Tanguay (1879-1947) was born in Canada and billed herself as the girl who made vaudeville famous. She was known for her suggestive songs and extravagant costumes. She has been likened to Madonna or Lady Gaga. Her one recording was I Don’t Care in 1922. Her parents moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts in the 1880’s and she began her career as a teenager at the Cohoes Music Hall. At the age of nineteen she made her debut in New York City. Tanguay was the highest paid woman of her day but was said to have lost more than two million dollars in the Wall Street crash of 1929. Tanguay had a reputation for outlandish behavior and was once fined $50 in Louisville, Kentucky for throwing a stagehand down a flight of stairs. She died, blind and nearly destitute, at the age of 68 in Hollywood. In 1953 Mitzi Gaynor portrayed Eva Tanguay in a fictionalized version of her life in the motion picture, The I Don’t Care Girl. Her ghost is said to still haunt Cohoes Music Hall in upstate New York. Letters from Cohoes is a highly fictionalized, musical portrayal of Eva Tanguay’s ghost. In its original form it was scored for flute (doubling on alto flute, contrabass flute and piccolo), harp, string quartet and solo baritone. It is in four movements, taking the form of letters. Letter 2. May 1974, a Greyhound Bus (duration – 4:08) The Majik Bus to Cohoes A young stage manager takes a long bus ride to a new job in Cohoes, NY only to be visited in a dream by the ghost of Eva. There was a girl with wild eyes glaring from the house. She looked so wounded!

Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. El Noi De La Mare, in English A Mother's Child, is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. The tune is lovely and this arrangement for two voices and guitar takes advantage of that both in the guitar part and the harmonised vocal part. The score is also available on Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct.

Duration c.5:45 (c.6:30 if performed with optional additional ending and A6 narration) For Cimbalom or other instruments, three Gongs, Bass Drum and Narrator Text: Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) / Edward Lear (1812-1888)Note: The associated recording is of the version using the text by Clementina Maria Black. First performed by Jordan Wright-Murray on 30 May 2019. The Cimbalom part may be played on a chromatic hammered dulcimer or hackbrett or any other instruments. Gongs - ideally 3 bossed/tuned gongs, non-specific pitches: high, medium, low. Bass drum - ideally an orchestral bass drum. The octave lower transposition indications in the cimbalom part are optional and when given beneath two-note chords only apply to the lower note. From bar 62 to the end the cimbalom may be played an octave higher than written. The cimbalom and gongs are played laissez vibrer throughout. The bass drum is played laissez vibrer, except where marked with x on stem (for example in bar 32), indicating dead stick technique. The start of each section of Narrator text is indicated in the score with boxed text. Where necessary the end of a text section is shown as unboxed text. 'The Troubles of an Automaton' was written by Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) and published in the New Quarterly Magazine in 1876. The story begins with a fictional advertisement announcing a public exhibition of Mr. Slade's Famous Chess-Playing Automaton. 'The Table and the Chair' by Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) appeared in his collection 'Nonsense Songs' published in 1870. In the poem a table and a chair go for a walk around town, become lost, are taken back to their house by a group of small animals, and then dine and dance together.
