ISBN 9790203755685.1955 erschien aus der Hand der franzosischen Nonne Carmen Bernos de Gaszold ein Gedichtband unter dem Titel Prieres dans l'Arche - Gebete aus der Arche. Diese Gebete werden den Tieren in den Mund gelegt, die mit Noah, in der drangvollen Enge der Arche vereint, das Ende der Sintflut erwarten. Die Dichterin folgt einer Tradition - man denkt an Asop, La Fontaine und Goethe - wenn sie im Wesen der Kreaturen Spiegelungen menschlicher Schwachen, Fehler und Tugenden erkennt. Denn die in der Wasserwuste gefangenen Tiere reden so fromm, furchtsam, selbstgerecht und banal, wie es menschlich ware. Und auch das Allzumenschliche - Hoffart, Leichtsinn, Neid - kommt zu Wort. Nur dass die Ichbefangenheit der betenden Tiere ihrer Unschuld keinen Abbruch tut. Ihre bedingte und bedrangte Natur findet Gedanken, die uns ein sympathisierendes Lacheln abgewinnt. Der Zyklus schien mir zur Vertonung geeignet, weil er ein religioses Thema unpratentios und originell vortragt und ein Stuck ermoglicht, das die ubliche Trennung zwischen weltlich und geistlich uberschreitet und Konzertsaal und Kirche in Anspruch nehmen kann. Zur Besetzung: Der Frauenchor muss aus den vier ublichen Stimmlagen 1. und 2. Sopran, 1. und 2. Alt bestehen, wobei auch noch Stimmteilungen vorkommen. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Korofo Moussa's song:The music of the anthem is derived from a praise song for the late-1800s king of Labé, in Fouta Djallon, Alpha Yaya Diallo (or Alfa Yaya). Alpha Yaya is, along with Wassoulou Empire founder Samory Touré, considered central by Guineans to the foundation of the modern Guinean nation, in part because of his fierce attempts to resist colonisation.In 1904, Alpha Yaya was one of many traditional chiefs and kings summoned to a doctrinal conference with French colonists, who were still in the process of consolidating his territory.The chiefs each brought along a retinue for the journey; in Alpha Yaya's retinue was griot Korofo Moussa, from Kissidougou in the south of the country. Alpha Yaya arrived to the conference on its sixth day, and Korofo Moussa is said to have spontaneously improvised, along with his troupe of dancers and kora players, a praise song for Alpha Yaya after he arrived. The song began with the line Alpha Yaya, Mansa bè Manka (Alpha Yaya, mansas (kings) are not the same). According to Fodéba Isto Keira, former Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the performance took place in the building of the modern Directorate of the Judicial Police in the Kaloum sub-prefecture of Conakry.Korofo Moussa's air quickly became popular; it was sung and played by all the griots for the rest of the conference, and within a few days it was known throughout Conakry. Alpha Yaya's personal griot immediately trained to play the song. Upon the return of the kings and their retinues to their regions, it spread throughout the country.Modern anthem:Upon approaching independence in 1958, the lyrics of Korofo Moussa's song were reworked and written in French by artist, choreographer and politician Fodéba Keïta and Jean Cellier for the national anthem of Guinea. Korofo Moussa's melody was retained for the anthem. According to Keira, Keïta used the solfège method when working with the music. Keira stated that the national anthem had to be inspired by something from Fouta Djallon for the sake of avoiding frustrations and preserving national unity.

Die Form sowie das Fortschreiten dieser drei Sätze stehen im direkten Zusammenhang mit der Struktur des Films. Die Sonate enthält zwei kontrastierende Hauptelemente. Hiervon be-zieht sich das eine auf Elisabeth und ihre Ekstase der Liebe und Furcht; das andere verkörpert Bedrohung, Angst und tonales Symbol, das mit der ständig wachsenden Zahl von den Tod betref-fenden Bildern sowie der Faszination, die diese auf Simon aus-üben, in Zusammenhang steht. Der Sonatensatz endet mit dem Tod von Simon. Der zweite Satz, die MELODIE voller tragischer Akzente und versteckter Anspielungen auf Symbole und Gestik der Oper des 18. Jahrhunderts, enthält Hinweise auf den thematischen Stoff des ersten Satzes. Resnais bezeichnet dies als „la separation (die Trennung). Hierbei geht es um die Zeit zwischen Simons Tod und Elisabeths Entscheidung, ihm zu folgen. Im Film wird die MELODIE (deren Zeilen eine fast buchstäbliche Umsetzung des gesprochenen Textes sind, wie z.B. „je te promets (ich verspreche Dir), durch die Handlung und die Dialoge in regelmäßigen Abständen durchbrochen, jedoch dann immer wieder aufgenommen. Vom Konzept her soll sie durchgängig gespielt werden. Die MELODIE verklingt ganz allmählich und nähert sich dem Rezitativ, ja Ausruf, so als wolle sie Elisabeth in ihrem Klagen und ihren Schmerzensschreien unterstützen und mit ihr sagen: „Je déteste la vie sans Simon (Ich verabscheue ein Leben ohne Simon). Die Passacaglia am Schluß stellt „le départ (den Abschied) dar. Der Bass, in der Regel von der Pauke gespielt, besteht aus den hohen Noten des Themas, das (von der Bassklarinette) im 1. Satz eingeführt worden war, um Simon im Reich der Toten zu zeigen. Fragmente und Erinnerungen an vorausgegangene Ereignisse werden durch den beharrlichen Bass im Herzschlag Rhythmus eingeworfen, wobei die Musik aus dem Reich der Toten allmählich von den untersten Registern, gleichsam einer Flut, aufsteigt, den gesamten Raum einnimmt und letztlich alles andere überdeckt und auslöscht. -Hans Werner Henze.

Published by Mydnyte Publishing (A0.1006443). A Prayer for Harmonic Convergence is a musical meditation for Soprano Sax, B Flat Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet. It is written in free time, and is more of an exercise in vertical development versus horizontal. A degree of tonal indeterminacy is implied and demanded, as the nature of the instruments that it was written for requires the player to make adjustments of their embouchure in order to keep the pitch in tune with the other lines. In a piece where a note which acts as a third suddenly finds itself acting as a fifth or a root means that slight variations of intonation is inevitable. This is a desired effect. Slight overtones from the instruments are meant to combine and mingle. Occasionally the overtones converge and cause the sinusoidal waveform to beat at different frequencies. There is no way to predict how and when the phenomena will happen, and therefore there is no real way to perform this piece the same way twice. While the performer should take care to keep their intonation complimentary to the other players, a degree of latitude is intended so that the performer may experiment with this concept. It is suggested that the players perform from the score so as to anticipate the entrances and exits of the other performers.

Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music.The fourth sonata has been arranged for flute or oboe, clarinet & bassoon or cello. The four movements are Doucement, Courante, Allemande and a pair of minuets. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the independent part writing. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. The only dynamics included in the original are Doucement (softly) at the beginning of the first movement and Doux , an indication to play softly from bar/measure 49 to the end of the first movement, and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments.The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

This Trio Sonata is an arrangement of the first of the seven opus 1 sonatas for violin, viola da gamba & continuo composed in 1694. When most composers at this time would compose a trio sonata with all the movements in the same key, Buxtehude composed the movements of this sonata alternately in F major and D minor. The movements are: Vivace - Lento, Allegro, Adagio, Andante, Grave and Presto. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.

The three movements of this piano quintet share a common element contained in the seed of a motivic idea—the interplay between the minor and the major 3rd : a tonal ambiguity or conflict of the minor 2nd. Stylistically, this Sonata pays modest homage to neo-classicism of 20th Century composers such as Poulenc (I), Prokofiev, Shostakovich (III), and perhaps even a touch of Gershwin (II). I hope this piano quintet will offer players and their audience chamber music that is a bit unusual yet worthwhile. The Sonata embraces the lightheartedness, the melancholy , and the whimsy of nostalgia. There is no separate piano part.Performance Notes:I Moderately fast, expresses dialogues of themes that move between piano and strings. The playfulness of the exposition (repeat is not optional) can give way to a more passionate building of the development to the climax at letter H. In the recapitulation the longer bridge remains steadily in tempo (no accelerando) relaxing just before letter N and theme two. The coda after letter O is a somber premonition of movement two.II Slowly, the bowings are ad libitum. The viola is chantlike and smooth. Violins glissando like the portamento of the Chinese stringed instruments, the Guqin or the Ehru type glissando leading to a very pure quiet long tones without any vibrato and the resulting fourth should be a pure tuning. The piano can use una corda ad libitum in softer passages, and the pedal (damper) ad libitum. In the B section (Letter D) pianist should treat the 64th notes like an ornament (upper mordent). Strings play the eighths after Letter G accents with strong bow changes. At the end, the piano lingers until the sound vanishes after the strings die away.III Introduction: Quick and spirited, the transition (Introduction) is measured and strict without alteration leading to letter A. The rondo theme, ‘A’ section, can slightly intensify in each successive repetition, but not slavishly. The small waltz or ‘B’ section, Letter C, the quartet might play to resemble a reed organ or harmonium—sweet, sonorous, and harmonious. The ‘C’ section, Letter G, big swell on short bridge passage, then pizz. strings become very rustic and like a peasant dance. Pianist can use una corda ad libitum in soft passages. Violins again after Letter I play similarly to non-vibrato of 2nd movement. The ‘B’ section at Letter L is now the grand waltz slightly faster and more indulgent with tiny rubatos tastefully allowed.James Albert Yeager (b.1946)James began his career as organist and choral conductor then harpsichordist and finally, professor of sacred music. As an organ major at The Ohio State University, he studied with Dr. Wilbur Held (B.Mus. 1969). Professor Joseph Goodman mentored him in composition at Union Theological Seminary in New York city (M. Sac. Mus, 1971). At the University of Colorado-Boulder, he returned to the organ, nevertheless, keeping composition as a mainstay (D.M.A. 1985). He was appointed Director of Sacred Music at the Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio) and rose to the rank of Professor (1984-2009). He retired as professor emeritus in 2009 and moved to New Mexico. While residing in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was organist/choral director for 12 years at a major Albuquerque church retiring again in 2021. His most recent compositions include Passacaglia & Fugue for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (2022), a Fugue for Piano and Orchestra (2022), a Sonatina for Flute and Piano (2023), and the Sonata for Piano Quintet (2024) as well as several smaller works for voice and piano.

Description:Doubt & Determination bridges the gaps between musical eras, as one would hear certain nuance that dates back to the Baroque era but possess a rather modern musical structure. The piece challenges both the listeners and the player themselves. For the public ears, one will have to adapt the performer's perspectives to 'feel' the piece. As the title suggests, both 'Doubt' and 'Determination' are two human perceptions that oppose each other, to understand the music is to find common grounds between them, through unexpected cadences and dynamic change. The performer will have to deliver the technicalities of bringing them together, through detail instructions on dynamics and tempo change. The piece is modeled in Sonata Form. however, it is to be approached with indeterminacy, occasionally granting the performer the freedom through Tempo Rubato and Breath Perceptions.Practice Suggestion:This music can only prevail through expression, thus the commitment for dynamic is of the utmost importance. It is highly suggested to understand what makes this piece unique, a score analysis is always a good start. Mark out the accents (Staccato and Emphasis) and the tempo change. Establish breathing points since the piece has very minimal instructions for that, it is hence highly dependent on the performer's capability to deliver.A proper mindset is essential for the perfect performance.Instrumentations:Certain instruments are optional if a soprano saxophone is proven unavailable. This Trio Sonata was composed around 1719 for 2 violins or flutes or oboes and cello or harpsichord. The four movements, Andante, Allegro, Largo and Allegro are typical of the other opus 2 sonatas and provide interesting parts for all three players. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the musical challenge. All editing is clearly indicated using dashed lines and parentheses ( ). Some changes of register have been made- mostly moving the flute part up an octave to balance the oboe part and avoid middle C which would not have been available on most flutes of the period. Handel's dynamic markings are very sparse and I have refrained from adding more than a few very obvious ones as there are so many possibilities and it is so much more satisfying for players to decide for themselves.

In pits and bands all over the world multiple woodwind players, or doublers, are often the unsung heroes of the show. The first one in the pit and the last one out, they bring a technical knowledge of three, sometimes four or five different instrumental traditions not to mention an ability to play in any number of musical styles all in the name of saving the producer a little money. They spend inordinate amounts of time taking lessons, practicing, and dealing with reeds of all shapes and sizes. Over the years the doubler has become an indispensable artist and many top universities and conservatories now offer multiple woodwinds as a major. The Sonata for Multiple Woodwinds and Piano was written for myself and long time friend, colleague, and collaborator, Mark Evans. Professor Evans is a marvelously sensitive and powerfully technical pianist and although the piece is written with myself in mind as the doubler, I owe much of the inspiration to the twenty-plus years I’ve spent making music with Mark. It was my intention to create a sonata for multiple woodwinds that is not a novelty piece but provides the doubler with an opportunity to perform a serious work that explores the expressive and technical boundaries of their instrument(s). By the same token, the pianist is not an accompanist but an equal partner with the doubler.

The 12 trio sonatas were originally written for 2 violins with cello or harpsichord. The publication was supported by George II who gave Boyce 14 years of copyright protection from 1745. The subscribers' list printed in the edition included everyone of importance and included G.F. Handel and Thomas Arne. The editing has been lightly done, additional dynamics in parentheses ( ), slurs added in dashed lines. A couple of short passages in the 2 upper parts have been transposed up an octave to suit the range of the instruments. The bassoon part can also be played on a cello. The Trio Sonata can be played by players of about grade 5 - 6 ABRSM and is also suitable for more advanced players and professionals as concert repertoire.
