Level 3 - SKU: A0.1133711 By Various. By Anonymous, Giorgio Mainerio, Michael Praetorius, Pierre Attaignant, Pierre Certon, Pierre Phalese, and Tielman Susato. Arranged by Alastair Lodge. Early Music,Folk,Historic,Medieval,Renaissance. 50 pages. Wold Meridian #733808. Published by Wold Meridian (A0.1133711). This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to the Dance Masters which presented 44 of my favourite Renaissance Dance band tunes and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited 22 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances. You can hear all the pieces and their chords on YouTube together with contemporary art and historical background material:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNSAs a help to those less confident in playing harmony lines, I have provided links to playlists of videos online for each part of each piece. You will hear the selected line on its own with chords and percussion, with the melody line added on repeats. The final repeat includes the other harmony lines, but the featured line is slightly louder in the mix. The performance starts with a percussion beat introduction to set the tempo.Who were the Publishers and the Dance Masters? What did they do? Sometime around the 1500s, the popularity of dance music exploded in Europe. Dance Masters were collecting chansons and dance tunes from courts and rural parts and were teaching these to new audiences, spreading their arrangements and reflecting the performance styles of the areas from which they had collected the tunes. Publishers were able to take these tunes that were becoming known across the regions and nations and spread them even more widely, thanks to technological innovations in music printing which made it quicker and therefore cheaper to produce collections of these dances in four or more parts. These publishers were often highly accomplished composers in their own right, who were both able to provide distinctive harmony lines and compose new tunes in the style of their sources, feeding the courts with enduring tunes. Composers and printers of this time would often use note values that are double the length of those we would be used to seeing today, and so to make this version more readable, breves have become semibreves or whole notes, semibreves have become minims or half notes and so on. Working with this publication For those just starting out in Early Music, the volume is an ideal introduction, since the ensemble can build from a soloist with accompaniment with the chords alone, and parts can be added in as additional musicians become available. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

Kerry Marsh #1065493. Published by Kerry Marsh (A0.1488645). A ukulele keyboard patch is used on the recording, and you can certainly feature a ukulele player if you have one, using the chord changes and rhythms in the fully-notated piano part. To further elevate the energy of the arrangement, two optional saxophone parts are included, adding an exciting layer to your ensemble's performance. With its infectious groove and dynamic interplay between soloist and ensemble, this arrangement will have audiences feeling the joy and excitement that Sammy Rae & The Friends are known for.

Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787341). United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was awarded the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. The text for this piece is adapted from his Nobel Lecture given on December 10, 2001. The lecture text is Copyright © 2001 by The Nobel Foundation, Stockholm, 2001, and is used by permission. This work was originally written for unaccompanied mixed choir. It was adapted for solo voice with optional violin for Michael Oriatti.A Girl Born in Afghanistan Today, in Afghanistan, a girl will be born. Her mother will hold her and feed her, comfort her and care for her – just as any mother would anywhere in the world. In these basic acts of human nature, humanity knows no divisions. We must focus on improving the conditions of men and women. We must begin with the young Afghan girl. Saving that one life is to save humanity itself. In this new century, we must start from understanding Peace must be made real and tangible in the daily lives of every man and woman. The notion that what is ours must conflict with what is theirs is both false and dangerous. It has resulted in endless enmity and conflict. It has led men to commit great crimes in the name of a higher power. It need not be so. We can love what we are, without hating what we are not, without hating who we are not. The girl born in Afghanistan today is just one test of our humanity – But it is the only test that matters.

Bells,Handbell,Handchime,Piano Accompaniment - Level 1 - SKU: A0.1358777 By Sharon Wilson. By African-American Spiritual, Chester G. Allen, Elisha Albright Hoffman, Fanny J. Crosby, Henri F. Hemy, John Bacchus Dykes, Reginald Heber, Robert Lowry, William H. Doane, and William J. Kirkpatrick. Arranged by Sharon Wilson. Children,Christian,Easter,Sacred,Traditional. 96 pages. Sharon Wilson #943238. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.1358777). This collection contains 10 hymns and praise choruses arranged for a one octave, 13-note chromatic scale Handbell choir with Piano accompaniment. For each song, the Piano provides an introduction then the Handbells play the melody and occasional 2-part harmony. Most songs include an optional repeat and second ending in case a longer song is desired. For each song, there is a combined score with both instruments (Handbells and Piano) on a grand staff plus two separate scores for the Handbells (one in standard format with black and white notes and the second with color-coded notes). If the combined score is more than three pages, a separate Piano only score is also provided.A color-coded note chart is also provided for each song which shows the Handbell notes used as well as the number of times each note is played.  The note distribution is helpful when assigning notes to ringers. You may want to assign fewer notes to beginners or evenly distribute the bells between all ringers. On the color-coded score, only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to distinguish (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. As a reminder for beginning ringers, all sharps and flats are displayed (shown in the key of C) on the color-coded score. As noted above, one of the Handbell scores for each song is color-coded for easier note reading for beginning ringers.  These separate color-coded scores use the Chroma-Notes™ Colored Music System. If you have a set of Handbells with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the Handbells match this color scheme. The number of ringers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one or two notes to each person. Note assignment suggestions are included for each song and range from 4 to 8 ringers. These familiar hymns and choruses are perfect for small groups and especially beginning ringers. Most songs can be performed with as few as 5 people (4 ringers and 1 piano player). The Piano accompaniment is written for an intermediate player.Permission is granted to make as many copies as needed for one family, church, school, or other performing group. Please purchase additional copies for multiple groups or organizations. Each song is also available separately with accompanying preview pages and audio samples. Song titles included in this collection:   Be Still and KnowFaith of Our FathersHoly, Holy, HolyKum Ba YahPraise Him! Level 3 - SKU: A0.1166886 Composed by Suzy Robinson. Arranged by Suzy Robinson. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 5 pages. Suzy Robinson #767094. Published by Suzy Robinson (A0.1166886). I wanted to write something based on a mediaeval mystery play and happened across an 11th Century version of the play of the Bridegroom – the tale of the wise and the foolish virgins. It was called Sponsus and is the oldest of this type of play written in both the vernacular and in Latin. What is even more extraordinary is that it is, in fact, a trilingual text in Latin, langue d'oc, and some words in the langue d'oïl. The passage which I have set is in langue d'oc, but for ease of singing I used a modern-French translation. This is scored for soprano, baroque violin, and viola da gamba. It can be performed at 415 or 440 ad libertum.I am very taken by the patchwork nature of mystery plays which is part promenade, part liturgy, part staged, part audience participation. I hope that having set a straightforwardly strophic text and using instruments more often heard in Early Music, jigsaws well with the more modern angular and sometimes dissonant nature of the melodic lines of this piece. I love the play of languages, and the mixing up through words and music of past, present, and future, revealing that time is perhaps a circuitous exploration rather than a strictly linear trajectory. And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time..

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1517469 By Nat King Cole. By Cliff Parman, Frank LaVere, and Lew Douglas. Arranged by Dave Gingras and John E. Dosher. Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show. Score. 3 pages. DAVID LEE GINGRAS #1091629. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.1517469). Pretend is a popular song, written in 1952 by Dan Belloc, Lew Douglas, Cliff Parman and Frank Levere. The best-known recording, by Nat King Cole,[1] was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 2346. It first reached the Billboard Best Seller chart on January 31, 1953, and lasted 20 weeks on the chart, peaking at No. 3. It also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in May 1953, just behind Frankie Laine's chart topping hit, I Believe. Cole would later re-record the song for his 1961 album The Nat King Cole Story. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills for your listening (playing?) pleasure - we hope you like what we've done to make this arrangement unique!

Guitar (jazz and contemporary) - Intermediate - SKU: M0.93721EB Composed by Vincent Bredice. Improvising, Lines & Phrases. Jazz. E-book. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #93721EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.93721EB). ISBN 9781619119710. 8.75x11.75 inches. An interval is the distance between two notes measured in whole and half steps. When we stack intervals one on top of another, we produce chords. If we play the intervals in the chord one after another, we produce an arpeggio. But since all intervals, chords, and arpeggios are generated by scales, it follows that scales are the basis of all music from these scales we will find our JAZZ LINES, which is what this book is about. The following is a list of most of the jazz scales the student will encounter as he becomes involved in the study of improvising. When we improvise, we use as our weapons the scale, harmony and melody. The two dimensions in music are the harmony (vertical) and melody (horizontal). It is highly recommended that every student of improvising, know his scales in all positions and a variety of chords that the scales generate. All scales should be played in at least four positions especially the 1st position forces one to learn the theory. All other position pattern scales must be transposed throughout the guitar. The author has written a few pages in the beginning of the book serving as a prerequisite for the jazz lines to follow. It is essential that the student know the scales, key signatures, intervals, and chord constructions that will be used throughout the book. In order to benefit fully from this approach to jazz, the student must understand the full meaning of the words practice and analysis. Most students confuse practice with playing or reading through the exercise. To really improve and absorb the material, every phase must be practiced. This means the fingering must be committed to memory, slowly at first and then as fast as technique allows. The idea must be so ingrained in the mind that it flows from any part of the fingerboard that the performer desires. This is the way great players approach an idea – from any fret, string or position! If there is no harmonic or melodic analysis of the material being studied, then the learning skill becomes superfluous and there is no comprehension and absorption, and without this proper digestion the performer cannot use it as his taste dictates. All of the great players, have had a great technique and this is the first goal of the young student – “great chops.†As the student matures, musicianship will grow but technique is at the grasp of all who seek it. Start today to acquire it!

Small Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1515104 Composed by Connie Boss. Arranged by Connie Boss. Christian,Christmas. 106 pages. Connie Boss #1089606. Published by Connie Boss (A0.1515104). Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie BossI didn't have a minimum copy, so you can make copies of this. This is why I have it priced at this price. For questions or requests, email Cdboss@cvalley.net.

String Ensemble - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1037867 Composed by Pierre Phalèse. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Renaissance. Score and parts. 17 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #642781. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1037867). Unlike country dances, the formal dances of royal courts in the sixteenth century required a good deal of study and practice. Many dancing masters published self-help instructional books, especially in France and Italy. Composers and publishers saw a commercial potential in collections of dance music and one of the earliest collections was that by composer and publisher Tielman (or Tylman) Susato, who published his Danserye in Antwerp in 1551. These music books were usually arranged with four independent instrumental parts and intended for use by any instruments that happened to be available. The two almands in this arrangement were well known popular melodies at the time of publication. They still retain their freshness and charm today and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting various instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. While you can add flute, recorder, oboe, glockenspiel or whatever you want, additional instruments are not essential but can add contrasting tone colour. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic than a piano. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used (but feel free to add more) and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.
