My arrangements there are cheaper and most of the revenue will go to the arranger (me) instead of sheet music plus.I love The Beach Boys. As a teenager, I was definitely exposed to a fair amount of their music for some reason. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the instrument I love - the horn.This is great for university students and professionals. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. Depending on which part you play, this one may require a solid high range and/or low one (although some alternate notes are suggested for those who wish to avoid the extremes). This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. I've tried to have the melody move around a bit so it's fun and interesting for everyone. Score, parts and cover arts included. I hope someone out there tries this arrangement and has fun!

It may have sounded like a strange Christmas wish; she wanted a Hippopotamus for Christmas. However, her recording became a hit that led to the purchase of a hippo for the Oklahoma City Zoo. The Bones of Cincinnatus found a welcome audience in 2018, with the birth a hippopotamus named, Fiona, at the Cincinnati Zoo.  The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

Pavel Friedmann wrote the poem “The Butterfly†in 1942 in the Terezin Ghetto when he was 21. He was murdered in the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944. Pavel was born in 1921 in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) to a Jewish father and a Christian mother. The Butterfly is a living symbol of the beauty of freedom. Such a free spirit could never have survived the confines of the Warsaw ghetto. But while the butterfly did fly away, the spirit and love of freedom it represented never left the souls of the Jews of the ghetto. They always prayed that one day the barbed wire would come down and the butterfly would reappear. The butterfly flutters there today, but many of the Jews who prayed for its return did not live to welcome it back. The first performance of The Butterfly was given on May 8, 1988 at JASA in New York City. The performers were: Andrew Bolotowsky, flute Glenn Rhian, vibraphone Mimi Stern-Wolfe, reciter There are at least two versions of the poem The Butterfly due to different translations.This work uses VERSION 2 as translated here: The last, the very last, So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow. I have long admired the expressive lyricism and immensely satisfying formal unfolding of Thompson's masterpiece. My setting is for mixed chorus divisi in 8 parts, and is based on two contrasting melodic motives which are continually developed and move through many tonalities before returning to the bright opening tonality of A major. -David Conte.

Donuts, if you make a mistake!  The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!  I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.  As with those exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like. • Choose a tempo • Choose a dynamic. • Choose an articulation/style.  One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.  Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping 5 lines to play the same set in a new key.  If you want an additional challenge in terms of range, play them in different octaves to expand the set.  Additionally, you can change the Key. Play them in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.  The variations are endless!  All Donut Etudes with the same version number are compatible so you can play them in mixed duets with one person on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2.  Enjoy!
