To You for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and piano is dedicated to the American Baritone Kurt Ollmann, who has done much for the promotion and performance of American music both in the United States and abroad.Whitman’s poem speaks of seeing a stranger and feeling love for this person. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release.As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. Published by Nick Walkley (A0.940772). This is a meditative arrangement of a well known Norwegian hymn. The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being also expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services. The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:I know a castle in heaven above, shining as bright as the sun; you'll find no sin nor sorrow there, and never a tear is shed.I am a weary traveller; may my path lead me from here to my Father's land; God, bless me on my way.We thank you for eternity God the Father, one in three. For you are gentle and mild to us in Jesus Christ! Amen.Note to performers:The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for all brass musicians!

Probably it's much older, but due to the technological improvements of music recording, the piece became popular only later. La Cabra Mocha is a musical jewel that tells the story of a nation who has a wisdom and finds in music the way to express itself. The history of its transculturation is remarkable, although it also carries contradictions, depending on the way of representing. Sometimes its imposed stereotypes are accepted by society due to a lack of self-knowledge, which ultimately leads to a change of identity, where some elements are transfigured and others are replaced. Arranging a Gaita de Furro for youth orchestra makes sense for the following reasons: First and foremost, the self-knowledge of a society should start from the childhood and should be cultivated and carried on from generation to generation, thereby conserved. Moreover, a lack of a pedagogical act, thus a pedagogical repertoire, is one of the main causes for the ignorance of Venezuelan music. Another important aspect is the transformation or adaptation as a process of maintaining Venezuelan musical culture. Many children already present the intention of the composition by drawing their attention to the formation of the orchestra, which represents a globally unified language as a network of distribution and which is locally independent. Wherever the composition is played - each orchestra will be able to maintain the quality and expressiveness of the piece without hiding its identity. The piece opens with a fanfare introduction of the Cabra Mocha, followed by a drum roll, which reminds of the drummer's traditional reputation and introduces the theme whose chorus is represented by the tutti and its verses by the soli. The first variation consists of a two-bar rhythm and major tonality, full of wit and cunning. The following variation is an Adagio with a three-part rhythm in minor. Then the timpani return to initiate the theme, this time shortened by its Reprise, which finally leads to a polyphonic Codetta. On an interpretative level, the return of variation can be compared with the return of education and thus, to a certain extent, improvisation. This is a very striking factor of traditional music, which is represented as a fitting metaphor in the form of harmonic and rhythmic reference within the composition. Introduccion, Tema y Variaciones sobre la Cabra Mocha was composed in the last weeks of 2012 and won the first prize in the composition competition for the Youth Orchestra of Zulia, which was awarded by the Venezuelan Orchestra in its first edition in 2013. Sweet, Sweet Smile is a C&W song composed by Otha Young and Juice Newton introduced by the Carpenters on their 1977 album Passage. The track features drummer Ron Tutt who regularly backed Elvis Presley.Sweet, Sweet Smile is one of the few songs recorded by the Carpenters which was chosen by Karen Carpenter rather than Richard Carpenter. Juice Newton and her bandleader Otha Young had written Sweet, Sweet Smile for Newton herself to record but Newton's label Capitol Records was not interested in the song. Newton's manager, who was a friend of the Carpenters, was playing the demo of Sweet, Sweet Smile at his home while Karen Carpenter was visiting. Karen Carpenter liked the song and brought it to the attention of her brother Richard Carpenter who'd recall: I liked it immediately...now there's one that, to me, should have done better than it did referring to the track's January 1978 release as the third single from Passage. The original key for this was in E major, and while that is a very good key for the guitar, this arrangement seemed richer in the key of D, with the guitar tuning the 6th string down to D. Should anyone want to perform this in E, the guitarist would need to used a capo at the second fret, and the vocal line would be sung a whole step higher. While this work was written for soprano singer, this arrangement could also be performed instrumentally with either flute, violin, or oboe playing the vocal part. To me, this composition represents the antithesis of how classical composers thought to compose. By directly contradicting the rules they follow and still creating music, it shows that stiff rule formats and limits on what makes good music are not necessary and oftentimes restrict creative composing. My only hope is that, if Johann Joseph Fux were alive today, he’d see my work as an abomination of all the rules he holds so dear.My Ruleset:1. In sixth species counterpoint (countercounterpoint/anticounterpoint), you may write as many notes as desired in your new melody for each note in the cantus firmus.2. The first note and the last note must not form either an octave, unison, or a fifth with the cantus firmus.3. The penultimate note of your melody should not be an even scale degree.4. Augmented Fourths must resolve down and Diminished Fifths must resolve up.5. You may use parallel motion very recklessly because it obscures the independence of the voices.6. The harmonic interval formed between the voices on the downbeat of every measure may not be a perfect/major consonance-unison, third, fifth, sixth or octave. Diminished, Augmented, and Minor are fine.7. The interval formed between the voices on the second beat of every measure may not be a major third or major sixth.8. The overall shape of your melody should have a single high-point, preferably as far from the middle as is reasonable.9. Except for on the first beat of a measure, Consonant intervals are only allowed if preceded by a dissonant interval on a strong beat.10. Every Chord is fair game.11. The interval between the first beat of each measure should alternate between even numbers and odd numbers.12. Leaps must prepare, leap, and resolve in the same direction and may be greater than a fifth.13. Functional Harmony is for cowards who let chords tell them what to do.

Experiencing High Volumes (2014) triet 6 minutes Composed for the Severnside Composers Alliance’s second Three is the Magic Number concerts of contemporary piano triets at the Lantern, Colston Hall, Bristol in 2014, performed by Milena Zhivotovskaya, Rob Broomfield and John Pitts. This is pleasant, relaxing armchair music, which doesn’t actually get particularly loud. I have Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) to thank for a motif that recurs through the piece – a short section of his Gran Vals, which you may recognise. I have omitted the last note of the original melody, which is actually an octave down from a more familiar version you may know. Before this motif made its way into this piece I had considered a title along the lines of Cycle of Thirds for harmonic reasons which may be obvious. But I put that idea permanently on hold after trying to get through to a utilities company. In retrospect, I should have ensured that the end looped neatly back to the beginning (which sadly it doesn’t quite), so that I could attempt to sell a recording of this piece to businesses for their call waiting music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4MDdZpWQNA

Of course, the story behind Wagner and Mathilde Wesendonck was even more intriguing. If you don't know the story then you should look it up. When Nancy Braithwaite informed me recently that I have written nine works for her since 1997, that was the year I wrote Yo Picasso for her and her chamber group The Arto Ensemble. I told her, well, let's make it ten. She said her current group, the Rietveld Ensemble, consists of clarinet, violin, viola and cello. That sounds good, but I also suggested adding a soprano voice. She said, fine. That was when I thought I should write Nancy a song cycle using the same Wesendonck poems that Wagner did for his orchestral cycle. 1. Der Engel ... Moderato 2a. Interlude I ...
