This is the first of a set of twelve trio sonatas by Domenico Gallo which were mistakenly attributed to Pergolesi. The first movement was made famous by Igor Stravinski in his Pulcinella Suite. The three movements (Moderato, Andantino & Presto), have been edited and arranged for flute, clarinet in A and bassoon or cello. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the three well contrasted movements.

Schubert wrote these in 1813 at the age of sixteen though they were unpublished until 1889. They would have been played at social gatherings by Schubert and provided him with a source of income. They certainly show that Schubert was never short of musical ideas. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy playing them.

Score and parts. 38 pages. Piper Publications #6385007. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811808). W.F.E. Bach, grandson of J.S. Bach, was the last in the long line of composers in the Bach family. Very few of his works have survived. The Trio in G major is one of two composed for the unusual combination of two flutes and viola. Here it has been arranged for flute, violin and viola. It would make a good companion piece with Beethoven’s Serenade for the same combination.The style is early classical retaining the Baroque reluctance to indicate dynamics , leaving this largely to the performers. I have added a few in parentheses ( ) and also some additional phrasings - shown with dashed lines to provide some guidance to less experienced players. The four movements are: Larghetto cantabile, Allegro, Poco Adagio and Presto. A trio of advanced intermediate players will discover that the Bach magic was there to the end.

Each sonata has 4 movements and, while technically within the capabilities of players of intermediate standard, they require a more sophisticated level of ornamentation especially in the slow movements. An opportunity for a trio to develop their improvisational skills together, perhaps. First listen to good recordings of these pieces in their original scoring and imitate before experimenting with your own ideas.

This Trio Sonata was published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1733 in the third volume of his Tafelmusik. The original was scored for flute, violin, cello and continuo. By 1733 the use of the continuo playing from a figured bass supported by a cello was falling out of use. In this piece, the use of the cello as a solo instrument effectively made the inclusion of the continuo redundant. In making this arrangement for flute, clarinet & bassoon or cello I have not included the continuo. Without the continuo, the Trio - still firmly entrenched in the Baroque style - closely resembles the three part Inventions of Telemann’s contemporary, J. S. Bach or the three part flute sonatas in Eb and G minor originally attributed to him but now considered to be the work of his son C.P.E. Bach. A set of 6 Quatuors ou Trios by Telemann clearly makes the continuo part optional. The arrangement is edited so that the style is true to the original. All edited phrasings (generally more suited to wind instruments) are shown using dashed lines. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics and none have been added. It is notable that Telemann developed his musical material throughout each movement and there are no repeated sections in this piece. There are four movements, Adagio, Allegro, Dolce and Allegro. The three parts are intended for players of equal accomplishment to delight their audiences.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music.The fourth sonata has been arranged for flute or oboe, clarinet & bassoon or cello. The four movements are Doucement, Courante, Allemande and a pair of minuets. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the independent part writing. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. The only dynamics included in the original are Doucement (softly) at the beginning of the first movement and Doux , an indication to play softly from bar/measure 49 to the end of the first movement, and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments.The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

SONATA No. 1 in A MAJOR SONATA No. 2 in E MINOR SONATA No. 3 in D MAJOR Written for 2 equal instruments these sonatas bring pleasure to players of intermediate standard and above whilst developing their independent playing skills. Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

This is the first of a set of ‘ SIX GENTILLESSES EN TROIS PARTIES’ for musette (a type of bagpipe), viele (an early violin) and a bass instrument (probably a cello) published by Boivin in Paris in 1731 and described as also playable on recorder, transverse flute, oboe or violin. Of course all the parts could be doubled (good for sales) and the instructions ‘tous’ for all players and ‘seul’ when only one should play would come in useful. Boismortier became very wealthy from sales of his music. The three movements, Gayment, Gracieusement & Gayment are for three independent players of intermediate standard and above. This arrangement for flute, oboe and bassoon or cello has been lightly edited. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The original two top parts have been set in the modern treble clef. The Boivin edition used the old violin clef. The edition also had no dynamic markings as the musette was not capable of dynamic variation. Generally the sections marked ‘tous’ should be louder than those marked ‘seul’ but, since dynamics are so much a matter of personal taste, I have left these to the performers’ discretion.

When most composers at this time would compose a trio sonata with all the movements in the same key, Buxtehude composed the movements of this sonata alternately in F major and D minor. The movements are: Vivace - Lento, Allegro, Adagio, Andante, Grave and Presto. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.

The four movements, Andante, Allegro, Largo and Allegro are typical of the other opus 2 sonatas and provide interesting parts for all three players. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the musical challenge. All editing is clearly indicated using dashed lines and parentheses ( ). Some changes of register have been made- mostly moving the flute part up an octave to balance the oboe part and avoid middle C which would not have been available on most flutes of the period. Handel's dynamic markings are very sparse and I have refrained from adding more than a few very obvious ones as there are so many possibilities and it is so much more satisfying for players to decide for themselves.
