Distant Engraver Music #5723341. Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977047). In this arrangement of J. S. Bach’s famous Air, the four parts of the original string orchestra are played by four solo contrabasses. The two upper bass parts take turns playing the soaring primary melody while the two lower parts alternate in playing the famous bass line. With only slight modifications and an occasional omission, all of Bach’s original counterpoint is used in a way that preserves clarity and lightness even though the overall range has been compressed for the basses. Both the 1st and 2nd bass parts require performers to play in the high solo register, playing up to high Eb and D respectively. The original key of D major has been transposed to F major for this arrangement.

It was first composed around 1890, at the age of 28, but was significantly revised just before its publication in 1905.This is an arrangement for wind dectet of the third and most famous movement called Clair de lune in Db major.Its name comes from Verlaine's poem Clair de lune, moonlight in French. It is written in 9/8 compound time, marked andante très expressif, and both the piano and orchestral scores are marked mostly pianissimo. Musically, Debussy's Clair de lune belongs to French Impressionism.It is arranged for a double wind quintet of 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl (in A) 2 hn & 2 bsn.I have included an optional bass line for either double bass, contra bassoon or tuba.Other movements are available, for both dectet, and other instrumental groups.It is based on the A Caplet orchestration, so I have retained as far as possible the solo instrumentation.The tricky arpeggios are carried by the clarinets and bassoons.

It's nice to do with harpsichord and continuo bass, but also possible to omit the continuo bass part and play simply with piano accompaniment.

One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.

Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

O'Connor learned this tune from fiddling legend Benny Thomasson at an early age. Thomasson developed the parts of the tune as incorporated in this arrangement. O'Connor added a variation to each of the Thomasson parts in addition. After Meyer finished out the arrangement with his bass lines,College Hornpipe has a new and different life from the one found on the early O'Connor recording Soppin' The Gravy. The trio performed the piece for a nation-wide television audience at President's Clinton Inaugural Gala. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
