Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.comAve MariaAve Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.Bach OverviewFirst of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. HistoryBach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer. StyleIt seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. VoyagerNASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach that all the others combined.

Jmsgu3 #3468186. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552847). J. S. Bach BWV 508  Score: 5 pages, Solo part: 1 page. Piano part: 2 pages. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo. He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.  Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands      Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

BeeMaster Music #1087742. Published by BeeMaster Music (A0.1512785). Perfect for choirs that need a different sound for Christmas, this piece is sure to captivate both singers and audiences alike. Video Highlights: • Arrangement Name: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas • Composer/Arranger: inspired by Chase Holfelder / arrangement by Rogier IJmker• Difficulty Level: 3 (on a scale of 1 to 5) • Duration: 3:39 • Suitable For: SMATB (contact me if you need another voicing) ABOUT THE SONG: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is a classic holiday song written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. It was first introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. The song's original lyrics were quite melancholic, reflecting the somber mood of the wartime era. Over the years, it has been covered by numerous artists, each bringing their own unique touch to the song. Frank Sinatra famously requested a lyric change to make the song more uplifting, which led to the more familiar, hopeful version we often hear today. Chase Holfelder is known for his unique approach to music, often reimagining major key songs in a minor key. This technique gives the songs a more melancholic and haunting feel. His rendition of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” has been particularly well-received, resonating with listeners who appreciate the emotional depth and fresh perspective he brings to the song. ABOUT THIS ARRANGEMENT: Rogier IJmker's choral arrangement of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas offers a fresh and unique take on the beloved classic. This version is characterized by its close harmony, creating a rich and intricate sound that is both captivating and emotionally resonant. Rogier's arrangement stands out by being set in a minor key, which gives the song a melancholic and introspective feel, contrasting with the more traditional, cheerful renditions. This different sound brings out the song's original, wistful essence, making it a poignant and moving experience for listeners. PURCHASE AND LICENSING: Interested in performing this arrangement? Baritone Horn TC/Euphonium,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.552852 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and individual part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3491315. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552852). Schwencke There are two popular versions of the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria to consider. Firstly, we have the version that exactly follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Baritone Horn & Piano, S0.661783. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. And they'll be on the Rock this Christmas, where stars shine twice as bright, They'll be on the Rock this Christmas, greeting mummers every night, Yarning ‘round the wood stove, eating partridgeberry pie, And I’ll be wondering “Why, oh why aren’t I?†‘Cause I’ll be in the factory, pulling double overtime, No one wants the Christmas shift so I guess that makes it mine, Late tonight I’ll light a candle in my lonely room, And think of those who are traveling home, ‘cause I know that very soon, That they'll be on the Rock this Christmas, where stars shine twice as bright, Yeah, they'll be on the Rock this Christmas, greeting mummers every night, Yarning ‘round the wood stove eating partridgeberry pie, And I’ll be wondering “Why, oh why aren’t I?†I’ve got to get there somehow, this poor soul’s just too homesick, My busted car won’t take me far, but my thumb will do the trick. I’ll call the boss from Port aux Basques, hope he’s in the mood to see, ‘Though I may choose to leave the Rock, it’s the Rock that won’t leave me. And I'll be on the Rock this Christmas, where stars shine twice as bright, Yeah, I'll be on the Rock this Christmas, greeting mummers every night, Yarning ‘round the wood stove, eating partridgeberry pie, And no more wondering “Why, oh why aren’t I?†Optional extra chorus: And we'll be on the Rock this Christmas, where stars shine twice as bright, Yeah, we'll be on the Rock this Christmas, greeting mummers every night, Yarning ‘round the wood stove, eating partridgeberry pie, And no more wondering “Why, oh why aren’t I?†Tag: No, no more wondering “Why, oh why aren’t I?â€.

Instrumental Solo,Piano,Piccolo - Level 2 - SKU: A0.549362 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and individual part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3490121. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549362). This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Piccolo & Piano - S0.661869. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance with minimal page turns for the accompanist. The duration with repeat is about 4:50. Score: 6 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Â
