John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a doctor of music at the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces, published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the wedding in 1613 of the Princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Some of these composers include:William Byrd: Byrd was an English composer and one of the most influential figures in English Renaissance music. He was a contemporary of John Bull and is considered one of the greatest composers of his time. Byrd's compositions include sacred choral music, keyboard works, and consort music.Orlando Gibbons: Gibbons was an English composer and organist who lived during the same period as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, particularly his anthems and verse anthems. Their expressive harmonies and intricate counterpoint characterize Gibbons' compositions.Thomas Tomkins: Tomkins was another English composer active during the same time as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, including anthems and services. SPRING CALLS - for Soprano, Flute, Viola, Cello and Harp (2006) DURATION: 10:30 Minutes TEXT: Canticles 2; 1-13 (also known as The Songs of Songs or Shir Hashirim LANGUAGE: Hebrew TEXT CHARACTERS: Latin PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: Spring Calls for soprano, flute, viola, cello and harp is a setting of texts from the second chapter of Canticles (Shir Hashirim) book, known also as The Song of Songs. It is one of the five Megilot - sacred scrolls that are part of the Hebrew Bible. Canticles is mainly being read in Passover, the holiday of spring. Its theme is love and rebirth of love, symbolized by the spring. Usually, only one or two lines of Canticles texts are being set to music. However, I had an interest to create a sort of journey as well as a psychological journey of a woman who searches, awaits and discovers her love. The text parallels the awakening of love with the awakening of spring in a most vivid and colorful way. While choosing instrumentation and musical language to with work, the modal, archaic sound mixed with the new was in my vision. Therefore, one can hear colors of certain exotic and primeval instruments such as the sistrum - an ancient Egyptian percussion instrument, dated from 2500 B.C. used mostly for religious ceremonies. Spring Calls was written for Close Encounters With Music, Yehuda Hanani - artistic director. It was generously commissioned by Lola and Edwin Jaffe with deep appreciation to their support. This arrangement adapted for viola quintet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions.Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

Variations on a Shaker Tune was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When he approached me about writing a theme and variations work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from nearby Hancock Shaker Village. As it turns out Deborah Leath Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark's assistant at the Terezin Music Foundation, has been researching and transcribing a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled at the Hancock Shaker Village. (Deborah's project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.) So I asked her to put on DAT tape a number of these hymns for me. I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape: Grateful Remembrance. It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost bluesy feeling to it. In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella in the beginning. Then, seven variations will follow. I. Grateful Remembrance: An instrumental version of the hymn. II. Grateful Chanting: Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic chant setting. III. Grateful Funk: The bluesiness of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff. IV. Tango Remembered: A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango. V. Sambinha agradecida: The yearning flat 6th in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would've loved. VI. Canonized Remembrance: The hymn is treated to a canonic transfiguration. VII. Grateful Groove: The pentatonic nature of the hymn is spun out in an Afro-cuban razzle dazzle finale!!! Enjoy!!!
