Key: B minor.Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) was a student of Johann Sebastian Bach who greatly valued his musical accomplishments and scholarly knowledge. During his time in Zwickau (1737-43) Krebs composed a collection of six trio sonatas 'Denen Liebhabern der Instrumental-Music zum angenehmen Zeitvertreib', the second of which is the sonata published here. Although still in the formal tradition of the sonata da chiesa, the four-movement church sonata, it already points to the post Baroque era, especially with regard to the melody, to the gallant sentimental movements. This very charming work has been out of print for a long time and is now republished in the Edition Schott.

The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a String Octet, consisting of 3 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos and 1 Double Bass, and features a Viola on the melody, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. These 'Church Sonatas' were originally intended for performance in church by two violins with the organ as 'basso continuo' reinforced by the bass viol. These types of work are sometimes known as 'Trio Sonatas' but, because there normally are two people playing the continuo part, there are usually four players in all.The seventh sonata has three movements, with the tempo markings Allegro, Grave, and Allegro.

This Trio Sonata is an arrangement of the first of the seven opus 1 sonatas for violin, viola da gamba & continuo composed in 1694. When most composers at this time would compose a trio sonata with all the movements in the same key, Buxtehude composed the movements of this sonata alternately in F major and D minor. The movements are: Vivace - Lento, Allegro, Adagio, Andante, Grave and Presto. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.
