Published by David McKeown (A0.588513). Chosn Kale Mazel Tov, (Good Luck to the Bride and Groom), is a Jewish wedding tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Cellos. Often shortened to Mazel Tov, it is thought that the song was written by Sigmund Zelig Mogulesko. Born in Romania, he was a larger than life character who dominated Yiddish theatre on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. Mogulesko was a childhood prodigy, equally adept as a composer, playwright, singer, comedian, actor and impresario. Mazel Tov was written for a wedding scene in one of his productions but has since become one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards.Mazel Tov is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo, with constant variations in the accompaniment. Mazel Tov is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Mazel Tov is perfect for wedding and concert performances, both formal and informal. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

Their purpose - wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that Robert compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan, know they would not be forgotten. I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting, Robert says, that I went home and composed a new piece of music with the title: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. Thank you for supporting me and being so wonderful.This work I began writing in May of this year, and initially it was just an improvisation for one viola. I had then realised after trying to write for Solo Viola how difficult it was, since it is such a unique instrument. I wanted to make the most of the technical and musical capabilities of the instrument, so I added another Viola. With that addition, each motif seemed to make more sense and the music just flowed. Centre is based on the concept of centring oneself, but also the beauty in being surrounded by motion; by seeing things happening around you and being able to observe. Just being allowed to exist, in a way.I’ve always been inspired by Australian composers, especially since I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by their music at different points in my life. The success of the song was guaranteed when it was recorded by Gene Autry, a huge star at the time. Initially Gene Autry didn’t like the song and was only persuaded to record it by his wife. She obviously knew best as Rudolph went on to become the second best-selling Christmas record of all time after White Christmas, with versions by everyone from the Jackson Five to Alvin and the Chipmunks. These bursts of anger haunted me for years and only after composing this piece was I freed of my anger. I still listen to this piece from time to time during bouts of rage to remind myself that the only way to win a fight is make concessions and come to an agreement with yourself. I hope these melodies will relieve your aggression and leave you humming this tune anytime you are frustrated. This beautifully fitful piece was performed and recorded by the cellist Raúl Andueza in June of 2020.

Go Down Moses was first published in 1853 after Afro-American Contraband regiments sang it during the American Civil War. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong. William Faulkner named a novel after the song and there is a memorable performance in the 1941 film, Sullivan’s Travels.Go Down Moses is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There are four verses, one slow and stately, the other three in a gospel swing style with constant variations. A strong point in these sonatas is putting more musical interest in the second movements, and this one is no exception, with quite a few clear calls to Haydn, especially op. 76/5. Technically this sonata focuses on backward-extended 1st position and then shifts freely up to 4th position, stressing on triplets in the first movement and on quick semiquavers runs in the second.
