This arrangement of Away in a Manger, would be a fine addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals and church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students, and, depending on their ability, even younger students, too. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (10 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Away in a Manger is one of the most popular Christmas carols and there are a number of musical settings of it. The most popular musical setting of it in the United States is the tune commonly known as Mueller. It was composed by James R. Murray and was first published under the name Luther's Cradle Hymn, in his collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses, in 1887. It was intended for use in kindergarten, school and home.In this selection, Regis Bookshar has arranged three verses of this popular Christmas carol for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba. The first verse is a traditional setting of the tune while the second verse has a more complex accompaniment. The third verse also includes a descant. Between the second and third verses, he has included a short interlude. In addition to this arrangement for a Brass Quintet, there are also other Quintet arrangements of Away in a Manger for a variety of instrumental ensembles, as well as quite a few other Christmas selections, readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition and other selections. You may find something else that may also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Phrasing and articulations marked here reflect the original vocal texts. Africa has long been a favorite of the Glenwood group. Chester and Creation were arranged in 2022. Mike Allsen February 2022.

A Virgin Most Pure is an English traditional carol that appeared in Davies Gilbert's A Collection of Ancient Christmas Carols, with the Tunes to which they were formerly sung in the West of England (London, 1822). The first verse and refrain are as follows:A virgin most pure, as the prophets do tell, / Hath brought forth a baby, as it hath befell; / To be our Redeemer from death, hell, and sin, / Which Adam's transgression had wrapped us in.[Refrain] Aye, and therefore be merry; / Rejoice, and be you merry; / Set sorrow aside; / Christ Jesus our Saviour was born on this tide.The tune is built upon the Mixolydian scale (seventh mode), having the same sequence of tones and semitones as a major scale but with a lowered seventh degree. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs - like this one - will be in 6 or more parts.A quest'olmo is described as a sei voci concertato, which basically means it is an operatic chorus, The title translates as In this elm, in these shadows and describes a clandestine meeting between two lovers.The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

The song tells a folk tale of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies. The story has been linked with old European myths of the Wild Hunt, in which a supernatural group of hunters passes the narrator in wild pursuit.Stan Jones stated that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old Native American who resided north-east of the Douglas, Arizona border town, a few miles behind D Hill, north of Agua Prieta, Sonora. The Native Americans, possibly Apache, who lived within Cochise County, believed that when souls vacate their physical bodies, they reside as spirits in the sky, resembling ghost riders. He related this story to Wayne Hester, a boyhood friend (later owner of the Douglas Cable Company). As both boys were looking at the clouds, Stan shared what the old Native American had told him, looking in amazement as the cloudy shapes were identified as the ghost riders that years later, would be transposed into lyrics. The melody is based on the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

Clearly the Poohratorio itself cannot yet be published due to copyright on the text, but the melodies that it inspired have led to various pieces including a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Canticula Ursae Minoris) and various sextets (Songs of a little Bear) including this brass sextet (2 trumpets, 2 trombones and 2 tubas) As suggested in the score, the ideal positioning would be to have all instruments in choir 1 on one side of the stage and all instuments in choir 2 on the other side (ie antiphonally). The pdf file contains score and parts. The sound sample is an electronic preview.

Joseph Pugh #6410323. Published by Joseph Pugh (A0.855176). This hymn was probably written in 1771, as it is in Conyers's Collection of Psalms and Hymns, 1772, in 7 stanzas of 4 lines. It was republished in the Olney Hymns, 1779, Bk. i., No. 79, with the heading Praise for the Fountain opened. It is based on Zech. xiii. 1, In that day there shall be a Fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. This hymn in full or abbreviated is in extensive use in all English-speaking countries.A well known form of this hymn is From Calvary's Cross a Fountain flows. This appeared in Cotterill's Selection, 8th ed., 1819, No. 43, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, and consists of stanzas i.-v. very much altered. In Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, No. 49, that same opening stanza is given, with a return, in most of the remaining six stanzas, to the original text. The question as to by whom these alterations were made, first in Cotterill's Selection off 1819, and then in Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, is answered by R. W. Dibdin, in the Christian Annotator, vol. iii., No. 76, for July 5, 1856, p. 278
