Late to the Game Music #749195. Published by Late to the Game Music (A0.1149070). I have never seen this delightful piece arranged for brass quintet, so I decided to do it myself. Originally for two clarinets and three basset horns, I've arranged it here for brass quintet. I would suggest using E-flat trumpet on the top part, but I have also included a B-flat part if no E-flat instrument is available. Take your time and let the melody sing!

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Octet consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba. One Trumpet, 1 French Horn and 1 Trombone play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

It is given my own special treatment, where the melody is shared around the ensemble with added embellishments. The bass line becomes a walking bass a la Bach and the music keeps on moving forward. As an aside, it became famous as the theme of the film Empire of the Sun about the Japanese during WWII. The producers thought the title Suo Gan sounded like Shogun. I kid you not!

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.Chiome d'oro, bel tesoro tells of golden tresses of hair, strings of pearls and roses that all charm and bind the lover to his love. It's a typical slushy romantic poem of the time and Monteverdi gives it some special treatment indeed. Originally for 'two voices (unspecified) two violins and basso continuo (now a standard part of any accompaniment) I have chosen to arrnage it for Two horns, Two Trumpets/Cornets, two trombones (baritone/euphonium) and tuba.The range of the violin parts is quite small, so it fits rather well on the trumpets. Of course, we are in the era when music was apt to be composed to fit any combination of instruments and so all the ranges would have to be similar to enable this to happen. I decided to give the duet lines to the horns.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, this song is exquisitely crafted and travels well onto brass.

The Program Music Suite consists of three movements : Order, Tranquility and Menace. As the name program music implies, each movement portrays an emotion or situation. Order is meant to invoke a machine-like, assembly line, factory feeling. Toward the end, someone throws a monkey wrench into the works and everything grinds to a halt. The bass drum signifies someone kicking the machine and restarting it. The piece fades out to signify the end of the day. Tranquility, as the name implies, evokes feelings of peace and contentment through the use of a flowing melody and lush harmonies. Menace, in contrast, brings the suite to an end, starting with a threatening build up, begun in the percussion. It then crescendos into a rather energetic and loud wind up, with rising and falling lines, before a dramatic spill to a close. The suite is very playable and a fresh sound for your audiences.
