Crosby could compose at any time and did not need to wait for any special inspiration, and her best hymns have come on the spur of the moment. Big Sky March is dedicated to the Big Sky Conference and the fun times they enable us highly energetic college students to have at sporting events (and afterwards). The overall sequence of this brass quintet models a typical college party in eagle country, where our grit and love for a good time make us like pirates of the Inland PNW, with wheatfields for seas and grain silos for sails. Fittingly, I chose a 12/8 time signature for the first half, as this feels more lilting and perky. As much fun as this stage is, the piece begins to slowly correct itself at the French Horn solo, when things snap into 4/4 time and start feeling a little murkier and eventually more clear-headed. In the end, the ensemble regains the momentum they need to finish on a high note (and turn in that exam the next morning). The PDF download includes the score followed by each individual part.

Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Brass Quartet – Intermediate – . “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Brass Quartet, consisting of 1 Bb Trumpet, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Brass Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I’m certain that this beautiful arrangement of Francesco Durante’s “Kyrie†will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851.The work, Verdi's sixteenth in the genre, is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.Many famous arias, and the quartet are among the many lovely moments captured in this arrangement. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies. After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition. This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program. To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions! It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting. It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine. There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument.
