Bortniansky was a Ukrainian composer who worked in Petersburg. Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe was composed in 1822. This 'Suite' is a combination of various harmonisations by other arrangers which I thought would also sound lovely on brass instruments.Breath marks have been indicated to support joint breathing and phrasing, where possible and musical.

A slow introduction followed by a fugue makes this a great concert work. The French baroque organ tradition is a bit strange, as they almost always played their fugues on the nasal-sounding oboe and bassoon stops, and didn't avoid occasional spine-straightening dissonances if their themes collided (as is the case in a couple of instances int he is work).

The Preußischer Präsentiermarsch (Prussian Inspection March), also known as the Präsentiermarsch Friedrich Wilhelms III., is a German military march composed by Frederick William III of Prussia sometime around 1820. A traditional inspection march used in every German military since the mid-19th century, this is the traditional inspection and colors presentation march of the German Federal Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr. It is also played during visits by foreign leaders to Germany by the Staff Band of the Bundeswehr (German: Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr) during arrival honors ceremonies. It is also a favorite piece of German marching bands, played in civil functions and parades. In Bolivia this has become the standard marchpast piece of the Bolivian Navy, but adapted in slow time.

The song tells a folk tale of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies. The story has been linked with old European myths of the Wild Hunt, in which a supernatural group of hunters passes the narrator in wild pursuit.Stan Jones stated that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old Native American who resided north-east of the Douglas, Arizona border town, a few miles behind D Hill, north of Agua Prieta, Sonora. The Native Americans, possibly Apache, who lived within Cochise County, believed that when souls vacate their physical bodies, they reside as spirits in the sky, resembling ghost riders. He related this story to Wayne Hester, a boyhood friend (later owner of the Douglas Cable Company). As both boys were looking at the clouds, Stan shared what the old Native American had told him, looking in amazement as the cloudy shapes were identified as the ghost riders that years later, would be transposed into lyrics. The melody is based on the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

Sally in Our Alley is a 1931 British romantic comedy drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Gracie Fields, Ian Hunter, and Florence Desmond.A British soldier (Ian Hunter) goes off to fight in World War I, with his girlfriend (Gracie Fields) waiting and worried at home. He is soon wounded in battle and crippled. He comes to the conclusion that she would be better off believing that he has been killed so she can get on with her life. She gets the news and is devastated. Several years later she is still grieving for him, but he has now been cured and goes looking for her. The film incorporated Fields' hugely popular signature song, Sally, itself a reference to Henry Carey's 1725 song, Sally in Our Alley, which had long been a traditional English country dance.Here's a rendition of Sally in our Alley for Brass Quintet. The Banks O' Doon (Modern Scots: The Banks o Doon) is a Scots song written by Robert Burns in 1791, sometimes known as Ye Banks and Braes (after the opening line of the third version). Burns set the lyrics to an air called The Caledonian Hunt's Delight. Its melodic schema was also used for Phule Phule Dhole Dhole, a song by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.The song was inspired by the story of Margaret (Peggy) Kennedy (1766-95), who was seduced and then abandoned by Andrew McDouall, the son of a wealthy family and sometime Member of Parliament for Wigtonshire. Kennedy sued for a declarator of marriage, but died prior to adjudication of the case. Although the Consistorial court found the marriage claim valid, the Court of Session decided the marriage claim failed, but found McDouall to be the father of Kennedy's daughter and ordered that he pay £3,000 to Kennedy's estate and provide for the child.(Burns wrote a second poem about Peggy, who he had met when she was 18 - Young Peggy Blooms.)
