Dance of the Hours (Italian: Danza delle ore) is a short ballet and is the act 3 finale of the opera La Gioconda composed by Amilcare Ponchielli. It depicts the hours of the day through solo and ensemble dances. Later performed on its own, the Dance of the Hours was at one time one of the best known and most frequently performed ballets. It became even more widely known after its inclusion in the 1940 Disney animated film Fantasia where it is depicted as a comic ballet featuring anthropomorphized ostriches, hippos, elephants, and alligators.In this arrangement for brass quartet (Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Trombone or F Horn, Tuba) we have the finale of the ballet, a vigorous can-can introduced by an abrupt change of tempo to allegro vivacissimo.

Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? This is it: 'Gotta get a message to you, hold on.Revive this hit on your brass instruments and enjoy!

A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the alto slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them. Enjoy yourselves!

The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachts-Oratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. Published by Zack Richards (A0.894386). During my undergraduate career at The University of Akron, like many college students, I went through a year of trying to discover what I really wanted to do. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies. After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition. This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program. To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions! It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting. It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine. There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument. Over 90 hours of tape was consumed in the sessions, with the total cost of production estimated to be in the tens of thousands. This process was reflected in the song's several dramatic shifts in key, texture, instrumentation and mood. It's arranged here for brass quintet, and works very well in concert or at a wedding. Features the horn quite prominently (which is unusual for my arrangements!).
