This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.Here is a group of four very short songs for soprano duet with continuo. I have arranged them as a duet for trumpet/cornet with a four part accompaniment.The four songs are related under the commone title Ohimè, dov'è il mio ben but each also has a title of its own:1. Romanesca a 2 (This is the subtitle. A romanesca was a musical formula characterised by a falling sequence of 5 notes and with a fixed harmonic progression.) The text translates as Alas, where is my beloved?2. Dunque ha potuto sol desio d'onore - Can it be that love of honour...3. Dunque ha potuto in me, più che il mio amore - Can it be that ambition and vainglory...4. Ahi, sciocco mondo - Alas, foolish blind worldEach song is a setting of a pair of couplets which together form the whole poem, which is why I have collected them together here. Besides, on their own, each is too short.Here also is evidence of Monteverdi's progress in telling a story through music.These four songs work beautifully on brass, with gorgeous suspensions and resolutions and well directed rhythmic drive from the accompaniment.The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767578). These three pieces form a small suite, linked by the idea of ‘pastoral’ or rustic situations and places. The first piece to be written now forms the middle movement, though at first it was the starting point. This is not easy music. It travels through several keys with large numbers of sharps and flats and in places the time signature shifts constantly. The first movement is modal, being based on the mixolydian and dorian modes. I took for this movement the idea of ancient Celts celebrating a victory and dancing and getting drunk around a smoky fire. Their chieftain strikes up a song, accompanied by a double drone. This melody is initially stated on the horn, with just two other instruments providing the accompaniment. At 4 before B, the remaining instruments join in, providing a rhythmic pulse and the melody moves to the Euphonium/Baritone/Trombone. Subtle variations shape the melody anew, leading to letter C. Here the complex overlapping rhythms provide a more dance-like feel to the music. Also, countermelodies start to appear which build the excitement. At letter E, the music becomes louder and the rhythmic pulse more insistent (perhaps they are dancing on the tables?) The mode changes to the more major sounding mixolydian. But from here on in, the revellers are starting to wend their way home, still singing and dancing and they gradually fade into the distance. At letter G, we’re back to three players, but with the trumpet 1 playing a rhythmic melody over the top of the original tune. The second movement is called The Aesthetes. The aesthetic movement was formed in the 19th century, but had been around before that in less formal garb. Their ideal was to emulate the Ancient Greeks and Romans – or at least their perception of what the ancients were like as found in statues, paintings and friezes. They adopted studied poses and were very effete in their mannerisms. Gilbert and Sullivan parodied the aesthetic movement in their operettas – particularly Princess Ida (but also in the Mikado and various others). So, here is a movement with classical lines in the style of a minuet, but in 6/8 rather than ¾ so that it can be more languid. All the melodies are ‘studied’ and ‘formal’ with long, languid notes and rhythms which don’t quite fit to the beat as the aesthetes pose and ponder and languidly look, studied and pale and wan. Because of the long notes in the melody, there’s an almost dream-like quality to the music as if they are seeing through a haze of Wormwood or Absinthe (a favourite drink of the aesthetes when they weren’t high on themselves or opiates). The third and final movement is called The Bohemians. This was also a movement at the end of the 19th Century. Where the aesthetes were ruled by rules, the Bohemians lived by none. They were considered wild and unconventional to say the least. The Bohemians movement owed much to the supposed free life and style of the gypsies and wanderers of Europe. Our piece starts with a gypsy violin style opening, including a cadenza, and then moves into the rapidly time shifting and gyrating gypsy dance. This section is in alternating bars of 5/8 and 6/8 with occasional 11/8 thrown in to keep you off balance. The frantic and frenetic movement continues up to letter F where things calm down a little – but not for long as the intensity increases again from Letter H to the quite sudden ending. This is tuneful yet challenging music which will take a lot of effort, but which will give a lot back in return.

The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.In Amor che deggio far, the poet is pleading with his love for constancy. he feels she doesn't love him enough to be his lover forever.This is one of the longer poems set in the seventh book and has a variety of musical forms within it. It begins with an opening statment of the 3 ritornelli that will reappear after each solo, duet, trio or quartet from the soloists. In this way, the composer prepares the listener for what will come and it will therefore be familiar and recognisable in the context of the song.This ia also one of the most demanding songs in the book. It requires a set of four solo singers (Trumpet/Horn/Trombone/Tuba) a pair of obbligato violins (Eb trumpet and Bb trumpet) and a string+ keyboard continuo part (Trumpet/Horn/Euphonium/Tuba) making 10 instruments in all. I had to use an Eb trumpet as the range of the obbligato is quite adventurous for the period and covers some of the clarino range that was to become popular in the High Baroque.At 5 minutes in length, this is a great finisher for either hafl of a concert, especially as Monteverdi has reserved use of all the instruments/voices until the very end, creating a rousing finish.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, this song is exquisitely crafted and travels well onto brass.

Interrotte speranze is another song about unrequited love for two tenors. Interrupted hopes, eternal faith, Powerful flames and beams in the weak heart His love is unrequited, so he wishes the lady ill! (Spoiled brat!) The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.Chiome d'oro, bel tesoro tells of golden tresses of hair, strings of pearls and roses that all charm and bind the lover to his love. It's a typical slushy romantic poem of the time and Monteverdi gives it some special treatment indeed. Originally for 'two voices (unspecified) two violins and basso continuo (now a standard part of any accompaniment) I have chosen to arrnage it for Two horns, Two Trumpets/Cornets, two trombones (baritone/euphonium) and tuba.The range of the violin parts is quite small, so it fits rather well on the trumpets. Of course, we are in the era when music was apt to be composed to fit any combination of instruments and so all the ranges would have to be similar to enable this to happen. I decided to give the duet lines to the horns.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, this song is exquisitely crafted and travels well onto brass.

Parlo miser o taccio is a trio for two sopranos and bass. I have set this for trumpets/cornets and euphonium/trombone, leaving the accompaniment in the hands of the horns and tubas, but with an extra high Bb part. The title translates as Should I, poor wretch, speak out or hold my tongue? Yet again our young man is in a romantic (lustful) state, and the words of the lyrics carry many double entendres in rspect of what he and his lady are getting up to! The strong dissonances followed by long drawn out resolutions and suspensions were a common device in this type of song to indicate how matters were progressing. At 6 and a half minutes, this is quite a long song, compared to the 2 or 3 minutes of most of the book. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Phrasing and articulations marked here reflect the original vocal texts. Africa has long been a favorite of the Glenwood group. Chester and Creation were arranged in 2022. Mike Allsen February 2022.
