Jerry Lewis ostensibly forked over $30,000 of his own money to the songwriters to come up with something that woluld be a hit for his movie partner, Dean Martin. That's Amore did the job, becoming Martin's signature song. It first showed up in the 1953 Martin/Lewis comedy The Caddy, for which it received an Oscar nomination for best oriiginal song. (It lost to Doris Day''s Secret Love from Calamity Jane.It has been covered countless times, by artists from Annette Funicello to the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.This version leans on the trumpets for melody, with the others providing the oom-pah-pah and other support. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1404796). James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: No, he's not heavy; he's my brother.He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for the Hollies later that year and also a hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. It has been recorded by many artists in subsequent years. The Hollies' version was re-released in 1988 and again was a major hit in the UK.Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song.Not sure how many brass quintet versions of this music is available, but here's my representation of it. The Banks O' Doon (Modern Scots: The Banks o Doon) is a Scots song written by Robert Burns in 1791, sometimes known as Ye Banks and Braes (after the opening line of the third version). Burns set the lyrics to an air called The Caledonian Hunt's Delight. Its melodic schema was also used for Phule Phule Dhole Dhole, a song by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.The song was inspired by the story of Margaret (Peggy) Kennedy (1766—95), who was seduced and then abandoned by Andrew McDouall, the son of a wealthy family and sometime Member of Parliament for Wigtonshire. Kennedy sued for a declarator of marriage, but died prior to adjudication of the case. Although the Consistorial court found the marriage claim valid, the Court of Session decided the marriage claim failed, but found McDouall to be the father of Kennedy's daughter and ordered that he pay £3,000 to Kennedy's estate and provide for the child.(Burns wrote a second poem about Peggy, who he had met when she was 18 - Young Peggy Blooms.).

It is composed in the 16th Century Italian style of music played at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, Italy. It is in this period that brass instruments are first used extensively. Most of the 16th Century canzonas were written in four parts, where the tuba player plays the same as the trombone down an octave. Canzona No. 2 is in five parts, so it may be more enjoyable to play for the tuba player. In this canzona a time change is made briefly to a 3/4 waltz rhythm. This rhythm shift was sometimes made in the 16th Century Italian Style.Canzona No. 2 was recorded Spanish Brass and is on the CD Music for Brass Quintet by Gregory Fritze on the Spanish Brass label.Duration of Canzona No. 2 is 2 minutes. There are several substitute parts included for some flexible instrumentation.
