(The) Carioca is a 1933 popular song with music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Edward Eliscu and Gus Kahn, as well as the name of the dance choreographed to it for the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio. It was sung in the film by Alice Gentle, Movita Castaneda and Etta Moten and danced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as part of an extended production dance number illustrating the ballroom dance. The dance, which was choreographed by the film's dance director, Dave Gould, assisted by Hermes Pan, was based on an earlier stage dance with the same name by Fanchon and Marco.The word Carioca refers to inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro.Astaire and Roger's short dance has historical significance, as it was their first screen dance together. Though billed fourth and fifth, many felt they stole the film, which became a big hit for RKO. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 7th Academy Awards, but lost to an even bigger Astaire and Rogers production number, The Continental from The Gay Divorcee (1934), their next film together and their first starring vehicle. They were billed by RKO as The King and Queen of 'The Carioca.'While the song has become a jazz standard, the dance did not have longevity. Following the success of Flying Down to Rio, an attempt was made to propagate it as a new ballroom dance, without much success. It was a mixture of samba, maxixe, foxtrot and rhumba. The distinctive feature of the dance â?? at least as portrayed in the movie â?? was that it was to be danced with the partners' foreheads touching.A French cover of the song was introduced in the comedy movie La Cité de la Peur (1994) along with a dance, also meant in a humoristic way. Both the song and the dance appear in the film that takes place in Cannes during the Cannes film festival in France, and have become a reference for a whole generation in France. 25 years later, in May 2019, the Carioca scene of the movie was celebrated in Cannes with a flashmob dance and by the actors themselves who danced again the mythic scene included in La Cité de la Peur.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1404796). James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: No, he's not heavy; he's my brother.He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for the Hollies later that year and also a hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. It has been recorded by many artists in subsequent years. The Hollies' version was re-released in 1988 and again was a major hit in the UK.Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song.Not sure how many brass quintet versions of this music is available, but here's my representation of it. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1373864). Black Coffee is a song with music by Sonny Burke and words by Paul Francis Webster. The song was published in 1948.It's first two measures are nearly identical to Mary Lou Williams' 1938 piece What's Your Story Morning Glory, and both songs share melodic motifs drawn from blues (including a strong melodic emphasis on the flat third and flat seventh intervals, known as blue notes). Williams felt that Burke and Webster plagiarized her composition, and reportedly considered taking legal action over the matter. The two songs have significant melodic and rhythmic differences after the first two measures of their respective 'A' sections, and Black Coffee has a unique bridge section that has no parallel in Morning Glory. However, during her piano solo, Williams plays both the identical feel and harmonies that appear on Black Coffee, with dominant chords moving up and down by half steps in lieu of staying on the tonic chord. While not a carbon copy, Burke and Webster arguably picked sections of What's Your Story Morning Glory to string together to create a new song. Coincidentally, jazz trumpeter Paul Webster (no relation to lyricist Paul Francis Webster) was given co-writer credit for Morning Glory by Williams when she published her song in 1938.My dear friend, Sam Harrill, has added his percussion magic some years later, and I am re-posting this for greater effect. It is composed in the 16th Century Italian style of music played at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, Italy. It is in this period that brass instruments are first used extensively. Most of the 16th Century canzonas were written in four parts, where the tuba player plays the same as the trombone down an octave. Gregory Fritze has performed in brass quintets for many years playing the 16th Century canzonas this way. The few 16th Century canzonas that are in five parts use the title ‘a5 depicting in five parts, as this Canzona does.Canzona ‘a5 was recorded Spanish Brass and is on the CD Music for Brass Quintet by Gregory Fritze on the Spanish Brass label.Duration of Canzona ‘a5 is 2 minutes.

Four Directional Fanfares for Brass Quintet and optional tympani) was arranged and compiled in 2020 expressly for the Spanish Brass. Each fanfare is named after the four directions of the compass with each having a different duration. I. North (70 seconds), II. South (50 seconds), III. East (20 seconds) and IV. West (2 Minuets and 30 seconds).
An optional timpani part has been added in the score and may be used to enhance the sound in ceremonial situations.
The composer has played and conducted in many brass ensembles over the years as well as composing many fanfares of different lengths to suit the occasion. A brass ensemble can always use new fanfares. These fanfares were recorded by the Spanish Brass in 2020 on the CD ?Music for Brass Quintet by Gregory Fritze? on the Spanish Brass label. These fanfares are also on YouTube and Soundcloud.
