The melody accompanying its lyrics, a folk tune, was used by John Gay (1685?1732) in his satirical work, The Beggar's Opera (1728). It is this tune to which the text, calling the shepherds to the manger, is typically set. \\\"Resonet in Laudibus\\\" (\\\"Let the voice of praise resound\\\") is a Medieval carol known in Europe at least since its appearance in the Moosburg Gradual of 1360, and probably much earlier. Today, it is well-known as the tune accompanying the text of the traditional German carol, \\\"Joseph Lieber, Joseph Mein\\\" (\\\"Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine\\\") and John Mason Neale\\\'s \\\"Christ Was Born on Christmas Day.\\\"

The tune appears in the Medieval songbook, Piae Cantiones (Pious Songs), compiled by the Finnish priest and headmaster Jaakko Suomalainen (aka Jacobus Finno, or \\\"James the Finn\\\") and published in 1582. Ralph Vaughan Williams harmonized the tune and included it in the English Hymnal (1906), of which he was music editor.

This lovely, lilting tune is an ideal vehicle for a sonorous arrangement for brass quintet.

This carol is one of the Christmas season?smost loved! Originally titled ?Luther?s Cradle Hymn,? ?Away in a Manger? wasthought to have been penned by the reformer Martin Luther for his own children;however, that claim has never been fully substantiated.

It's Beginning To Look Like Christmas-Arranged for Brass Quintet by Jari Villanueva ?It?s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas? written in 1951 by Meredith Willson was originally titled ?It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas.? The song has been recorded by many artists, but was a hit for Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres and His Orchestra on September 10, 1951. Bing Crosby recorded which was also widely played. It was later incorporated into the pre-Broadway version of the score of Willson?s 1963 musical ?Here's Love? and can be heard on that show?s original cast recording, where it is sung in counterpoint to a new melody and lyric, ?Pinecones and Holly Berries.? Johnny Mathis recorded the song for his 1986 album Christmas Eve with Johnny Mathis. This version gained popularity after its inclusion in the 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tune and would be a great selection for a holiday concert or as a special presentation around Christmas.
