Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1362360). Perhaps most often associated with Christopher Wordsworth’s Easter hymn text, “Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven and Voices Raise,†and his All Saints Day text, “Hark! The Sound of Holy Voices,†Arthur S. Sullivan's tune LUX EOI may be used with any hymn in 8.7.8.7 D meter.Best known for his Victorian-era collaborations with dramatist and librettist W.S. Gilbert on comic operas including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, Sullivan (1842-1900) displayed prodigious musical talent early in life, writing his ï¬rst anthem at age eight, joining the Chapel Royal as a chorister at age 12, and earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 14. He later studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and while still in his teens began building a reputation as a promising young composer. Among Sullivan’s works are 24 operas, 11 full orchestral works, 10 choral works and oratorios, and more than 70 hymns and anthems, including the hymn tunes ST. GERTRUDE (“Onward, Christian Soldiersâ€), FORTUNATUS (“Welcome, Happy Morningâ€), ST. KEVIN (“Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strainâ€), and the tune that is the basis for this arrangement.Following an opening fanfare by brass which is answered by organ, the verses proceed as follows: organ accompaniment verse (may be repeated as needed), brass accompaniment verse, penultimate verse (organ accompaniment with countermelody by trumpets), interlude, and ï¬nal verse (organ with brass punctuations and conclusion).©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). The introduction is very much in the style of a fanfare. The first melodic statement is in the trumpets and horn then added contrapuntally by the trombone. The next phrase alternates between the lower voices and then upper voices. Next, the melody is augmented rhythmically while support by chordal movement underneath. A quick modulation upward with motives much like the beginning with the motive tossed about amongst the different voices. Then comes a slow section with expressive movement between the voices with the melodic material and the supported chords become increasingly more bold right up to a solid ending.

The beginning is active establishing a happy beginning to the piece. Then all the parts are in straight harmonies and then become fragmented. A modulation takes place allowing the lower voices to carry the tune. Then a tuba sola solo commences with light upper parts decorating the lines, until the parts fragment. This concludes with a modulation with motivic statements. After a brief intermission the piece takes off again with the tune in the lower voices and the trumpets add a flurry descants. As the piece comes to a close more and more voices add to the mix until the pieces adds a solid, grand statement.Key of Ab, Db, Eb.

The introduction starts in the tuba and then adds more voices as you would expect- rising! The tune is now bantered about between the upper voices and then lower ones. Modulation! And the Q&A game continues. Another modulation and the tempo suddenly changes to a slower, expressive one with the French horn featured. As before the Q&A continues. Another modulation and an “a tempo where the piece now in full ensemble starts lower and softer and continually adds activity and pitch raising until a vigorous conclusion.

It begins with fanfare motifs of the tune and then breaks into the hymn adding more parts as it progresses. It continues with a Q&A type of dialog between the lower, then upper voices. The second setion in a different key is reminiscent of the opening only this time in the middle voices and again moves in a Q&A type of dialog. Again modulating to a new key the theme is bounced around with rhythmical interest only to finalize in strong chordal patterns and ending on a bold declamation.

The song sold a more than a million copies of sheet music and 78rpm records, and sparked rumbamania in the U.S. The National Recording Preservation Board recognizes it as the first American recording of an authentic Latin dance style. It has been covered in recordings something like 160 times, by Stan Kenton, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and many others.This fairly simple arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. All of a sudden, the upper brass, silently present the tune in block harmonies until the lower brass present a countermelody. Now! Everybody’s involved. Next, a dialog between the upper brass and middle brass takes place as it alternates back and forth. With a modulation in place the tempo goes slow, the tune is in the lower brass- expressive! All of a sudden from bottom to top motives are presented- in stacked chords…. This goes through different transformations until the piece elevates into an uplifting conclusion.

Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. This easy arrangement for brass quintet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

As one might expect the piece is cheerful from beginning to end. It opens with rhythmic patterns where the first statement of the tune is presented by the trombone. The chorus is harmonically in block format where it comes to an end. NOW, something different the second trumpet and tuba present a simple accompaniment while all the other voice, yes voices, sing the words and melody of the song! A brief conclusion, a modulations and the piece returns to the texture of the earlier statement. The a bit of tongue and check statements and a very conclusive ending.
