This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters. The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind). In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly. The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance. Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play. Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets. Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

This work is by Paul Gerhardt, a little-known contemporary of Bach and Handel. In the third verse, I have added a 'descant part' for trumpet 1. It briefly goes to a high D, twice, but I didn't want to lose the brightness of a baroque sound. Parts are supplied for Trumpet 1 in Eb Trumpet 2 Alternative BbTrumpet for part 1, French Horn Trombone Tuba additional parts for Tenor Horn and Treble clef trombone & Eb Bass.

Rückert-Lieder (Songs after Rückert) is a collection of five Lieder for voice and orchestra or piano, based on poems written by Friedrich Rückert. The first four songs were premiered on 29 January 1905 in Vienna, Mahler himself conducting, together with his Kindertotenlieder (also on poems by Rückert). The set of songs was not intended as a cycle: the Lieder were originally published independently from each other, connected only by the poetry and common themes. However, they were later published together and most often have been performed together and come to be known as the Rückert-Lieder, although Mahler did set more texts of Rückert. This arrangement for brass quintet puts the singer's part for flugelhorn solo with the rest of the ensemble playing an adaption of the original's orchestra accompaniment. Rhythmic elements are prominent in this 3-movement brass quintet. The third movement uses syncopated harmonic backgrounds to make passages in two sound as if they could be in three, and passages in three sound as if they might be in two. The middle movement could be described as a hymn, through it written for the most part in 10/8 meter. The lyricism of the music doesn't suffer from these rhythmic complexities. I think it stands out more strongly because of it. Suitable for advanced intermediate players or professionals. Duration: 9 minutes, 50 seconds.

Sandwiched in the middle of the running theme is the contrasting “hiding theme,†which is driven by a calmer but unsettling three-measure hemiola phrase structure. The third theme, the “escape theme,†transitions to a minor key and masterfully modifies a motif from “Escape†by Kevin McKee. Running, hiding, and escaping all take their turns throughout the piece with various senses of urgency, triumph, and terror. At times, the themes transform into opposite meanings. Written in the early 20th century, its wide-spread and successful use as a song for children can possibly be attributed to the construction of the melody itself. The melody starts with two descending intervals, each a minor third. These same qualities also made Lightly Row an excellent choice as a song for use with beginning instrumentalists. One might find it difficult NOT to find this song included in most published beginning-level instrument method books since the mid-20th century. This arrangement for brass quintet permits the performers to greatly expand upon the intervals and scale passage of the original song while exploring one of the more common composition forms, theme and variation with an excursion to a shortened version of another musical form, the fugue. An attempt has been made to provide interesting and challenging material for all members of the quintet. This selection could be performed at any point in a recital. It could be one of several featured selections performed in a concert with a programmatic theme of early 20th Century folk songs; or a portion of a concert where a theme and variation selection is desired. It might also serve as an encore to any recital or concert!

The introduction uses an imitation format while at a soft expressive feeling. The first section is somewhat straight forward that passes the tune around amongst the various parts while sitting on chordal movement. This format continues on into the next section of the piece with the parts moving in and out of the texture. The third section essentially shows the first trumpet in an obbligato fashion concluding into a Maestoso feel. After several modulations the piece immediately becomes solemn and resolves oh so peacefully.

This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The third and most famous movement ofDebussy's Suite Bergamasque, "Clair de Lune" was writtenin about 1890, originally under the title "Promenade sentimentale".However, it went under a number of revisions prior to its publication in 1905,including changing its name to the French for moonlight. The name comes from apoem by Paul Verlaine of the same name; in fact it is the first stanza of thispoem that give the suite of pieces its name. This arrangement includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clefeuphonium and tuba.
