This is certainly a rousing example. The melody is shared between the 1st Trumpet, Horn and Trombone/Euphonium (Parts 1,3 and 5) as the different singers take their 'verse'. Va Pensiero, the great chorus from Verdi's opera Nabucco is also known as The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, retelling the biblical story of the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish people after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE. Italian patriots who were seeking to unify their country and free it from foreign control found the hymn very moving. The music was performed as a cortege in the streets of Milan after the composer's death. Mr. Drei's beautiful arrangement is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and is about 4 minutes in length. Parts are supplied for C and B-flat Trumpets.

This solo feature for a quintet's trumpeter or cornetist is from the Golden Age of concert bands at the turn of the 20th century composed by legendary Sousa Band soloist Hebert L. Clarke. Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part. The sound file is an actual brass quintet performance of the entire arrangement and not a computer playback of the score. There is a great deal of rubato and expression required in the performance of this work allowing students to use their emotions in depicting the scenario. A substitute trombone for horn part is included. The trumpet range is to hi A but just in the melodic passages. .
