Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158392). “Valor†offers a potent two-minute concert opener, or an attention grabber after intermission. It is also highly effective as an encore (depending on endurance, particularly of the first trumpeter and hornist), leaving the audience with a rush and energy typified by an effective encore. Besides some minor edits and formatting, the composition was completed the day I hit my ten-year anniversary of serving in the United States Air Force Bands—a fitting anthem to celebrate a decade of service to my wonderful country! The title settled the next day as I began my second decade as an Airman Musician: Valor. The best account is recorded in my personal journal on 27 April 2021: “[Valor] is the Thrower family motto from hundreds of years ago. It’s also a concept that helped get me into [Arizona State University] for my doctoral studies. [Professor] Hickman asked for a very difficult orchestral excerpt during my audition. [Béla Bartók’s “Concerto for Orchestra.â€] I expressed some trepidation, but decided to give it a shot. I nailed it! Then Hickman turned to me with a big smile, ‘I give extra points for valor!’ So I’m pretty sure this little two-minute musical journal entry will keep the name ‘Valor’… as a motivational cheer for my next ten years in the Air Force. Valor! Great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. Ok, in the face of life’s many battles, Valor it is! And on to the next ten years!†The music is in AA’BA’ form. The B section is heavily influenced by the thematic material of the A section, but with a strongly contrasting mood that could be dubbed quiet dignity. A finale section follows the last A with some motivic twists from throughout the piece, decisively ending with a power that could well be accompanied by a dazzling flurry of fireworks. None of the performers get much of a reprieve throughout the two minutes packed full of notes. The first trumpet part stays in the upper mid-range for most of it, which would absolutely sparkle on an E-flat trumpet (alternate part provided). Second trumpet is also demanding. The horn part demands a decent level of mastery in the high range as well as the low range, vehemently forsaking its traditional role of off beats. The trombone and tuba parts also present their challenges, and never really stop longer than to take a breath. Although this work could conceivably be performed without percussion, doing so is strongly discouraged. The power delivered by the snare, bass, and cymbals, and even the triangle in the B section, make the part arguably indispensable.

The Sound of Music recounts the tale of Maria, a postulant sent to care for the seven children of widowed Captain von Trapp in pre-World War II Austria. Maria ends up falling love with the children and their father, choosing to leave the abbey and marry the captain. The family flees to Switzerland as the Nazis annex Austria. The Broadway production of “The Sound of Music” premiered in 1959, followed by a film adaptation in 1965.The Processional and Canticle is from the wedding scene in the stage version of “The Sound of Music”. (The film score version is slightly different and shorter.) In the musical, this piece features a choir of nuns singing, along with the orchestra. This arrangement closely follows the stage production score and the 1959 original Broadway cast recording, which includes the Canticle section (which is not included in the film).This piece can be shortened or lengthened as needed for a particular performance or event, making it ideal for any event that needs a processional or recessional. There are also two options for ending the piece - a quiet, solemn ending or a reprise of the processional with bolder finish.

Like almost rags, it is lively and fun. People would enjoy listening to rag music while drinking Kellogs Cheerios Beer!This arrangement uses two trumpets, a french horn, a trombone (which several glissandos) and a tuba that occasionally has the melody. The melody is passed from part to part, it has a false ending and a false key change. It sounds like it is ending but, no, it is going on. The false key change has bars that move to different keys but when done ends up in the same key.This is kind of handy as once each part has the fingerings for their part down, they can just keep on going. It keeps the audience alive and is a fun addition for any quintet.

This arrangement is different than most in that it is constructed to be as flexible as possible. With the exception of a short intro and ending coda, there are four 20-measure sections. Sections 1 and 4 are like most other arrangements; the well-known melody over a pulsating quarter note accompaniment. Sections 2 and 3 differ in that each instrument has measures of rest to save their chops. Sections 2 and 3 are also musically different; while following the same chord progression, they incorporate the main melody in different ways: segmented, inverted, reversed, inverted AND reversed… These sections are written to by stylistically correct with the original, but musically more interesting and rewarding for the performers.

An extremely artistic and challenging composition, fit to feature on any concert, both for the general public and academic circles, Airpower! is cleverly titled to honor MSgt Alex Serwatowski, an Air Force tuba player, upon his retirement. Overall, “Airpower!†is light-hearted with a comedic but dignified feel, intended to be happy and celebratory. There are moments of a more serious nature, such as the transitions in measures 19-22 and 74-77, and a slower contemplative section (51-68) with a particularly dramatic moment in measures 55-56, where the listener wants to rise up with honor and respect. There is a healthy spectrum of emotions in this work. One remarkable feature of this composition is that it does not end in the same key in which it starts. In fact, it ends in D major, a tritone away from its opening key of A-flat major—as distantly related as two keys can be. Throughout the entire piece, the harmonic rhythm is intense, primarily exploring chromatic mediants and relative keys, wandering from A-flat to C to F to D minor and then several rapid tonicizations leading to G major, then to E minor to E major to G, E-flat, C minor, C major, A minor, tonicizations again, finally ending in D major. Although it is highly unified thematically (with essentially one theme that varies and develops, symbolically), this unique harmonic feature symbolizes the change that a person undergoes through a 23-year career. “Airpower!†is about 4’30†in duration, which is a fairly substantial single-movement work for brass quintet. The tempo never varies through the entire work, though with rhythmic augmentation and mutation the effect of tempo changes is present. The technical demands are difficult for all the players. This piece works the tuba into the melody and technical passages as much as any other player.

This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. Sousa composed The Fairest of the Fair intending his Band to perform it at the annual Boston Food Fair in the fall of 1908. It is the only work of any kind that he composed that year and one of only a handful of compositions that he wrote between 1906 and 1910. He apparently completed it in New York during the summer, as the final page of the original score was signed John Philip Sousa, Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.The march almost missed its premier at the Boston Food Fair. Because of an oversight the music, which Sousa had written and scored out, did not have individual parts written out for the performers. This was discovered the day before the performance. The new composition had received much advanced publicity and it would have been an embarrassment to Sousa not to have it performed. The band’s copyist, Louis Morris, rose to the occasion and on the train to Boston stayed up and copied out the parts so the band could premier the work as advertised on September 28, 1908. In the morning when Sousa found out Morris was working all night he instructed him to finish the work and get some rest. Two fanfares are too short for a concert feature but work extremely well in a ceremony or celebratory setting. The last two short pieces aptly serve contrasting special purposes, as explained below.“Fort Pierre Fanfare” is about 40 seconds in duration, and was composed to open the feature concert at the South Dakota Bandmasters Association convention in 2022. Offutt Brass, from the US Air Force Heartland of America Band, was invited to perform that concert. Before the final piece of the concert, when gifts were exchanged between the sponsor and performers, beautiful presentation copies of the sheet music were presented to the sponsor. In performance, staging directions on the music can be extremely effective or cringy, depending on how they are conveyed. If there is any inkling that there may be a cringe factor, ignore them, and play the fanfare already on stage.“Enduring Freedom Fanfare” is nearly a minute of music. It was composed as a gift for the outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Major Rafael Toro-Quiñones. His leadership was strong and inspiring, and he held a place of high esteem among many of the fine military musicians that he led. The Change of Command ceremony was toward the end of the Covid-19 shut-downs, so the work was not performed at the ceremony. Chief Remley, from the command’s satellite location in Nebraska, hand-delivered some finely printed presentation copies to Major Toro-Quiñones.“Noble Eagle Fanfare” is slightly over a minute in length, and, like “Enduring Freedom Fanfare,” was composed as a gift for another outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Captain David Neil Regner.“Pilgrims’ Fanfare” was composed on what many Americans acknowledge as “Pioneer Day,” 24 July 2023. Not only honoring the thousands of pioneers that settled the western United States, but also the pilgrims that voyaged across the ocean to settle in the new continent. It is about 15 seconds in duration and is effective for any occasion in need of a magnificent fanfare.“Flightline Fanfare,” as its title implies, was composed for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the dedication of the newly renovated flightline at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Unfortunately, the ceremony itself was altered last-minute, and the 15-second fanfare was not used. However, like “Pilgrims’ Fanfare,” it is very handy for any event demanding a splash of pomp.“American Interlude” is a soft 75-second underscore for an MC’s moving speech or dedication. It was originally composed as a smooth segue between two moving patriotic pieces of different keys in a concert setting, but can be used in any similar appropriate situation.“Troop 184” is dedicated to my childhood BSA Scoutmaster, Gerry Nielson, who molded me in significant ways into the man I am decades later. It is functional music, akin to a fight song, and can be easily marched to. Words may be crafted as a customized hiking ditty, or it can be featured before or after ceremonies as prelude or processional music. The duration can also be customized, as there is a written optional repeat, lengthening the tune from 45 seconds to a minute and a half.
