Published by David P. Brown (A0.1304643). This is a ridiculously difficult arrangement of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for Brass Quintet. Trumpets will want to use C trumpet, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugelhorn, (maybe Bb and D trumpets as well) and all players will need mutes. I've only performed it complete once. It would be a show stopping piece for any concert, recital, or special event. Each movement could be played individually, and several of them work very well as solo pieces, or in tandem with another movement. Good luck!

This setting of Christmas carols is modeled after parts of the Ravel transcription of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.†It begins with a “Promenade†in 5/4 based on “O Come, O Come Emmanuelâ€. Measures 20 - 140 is modeled after “The Ballet of Unhatched Chicks†and uses the carols “O Come Little Children,†“Pat-a-pan,†and “Fum Fum Fum.†This is followed by the “Promenade†from measures 141 to 151. Measures 152 to 214 is modeled after “Bydlo†and uses the carols “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen†and “Good King Wenceslausâ€. Measures 215 - 225 is a shorter, more pensive “Promenadeâ€. “Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle†is the influence on the setting of “Rise Up Shepherds and Follow†from measures 226 -252. This is followed by a setting of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing†from measures 253 - 280 that is influenced by “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs.†This leads directly into a majestic chorale setting of “O Come, All Ye Faithful†that is modeled after “The Great Gate of Kiev†as it brings the piece to a triumphant conclusion.

An effective technique used is to punctuate the music with periodic silences or unison moments. There are a few quasi-Penny Lane measures for first trumpet midway through, followed by some nice tuba solos, then the piece ends with an appropriately What if...? feeling!===Performance Notes:Experiment #1 is an original composition written for brass quintet. This composition was inspired by a curiosity to explore the different instrument sounds available in music notation software. As a result, this piece was originally written for synths, keyboards, bass and drums. After completing the piece, I found the sounds and instrumentation lacked warmth and character.  Ultimately, I liked the piece and decided the experiment would be to score it for brass quintet and see what happens.  There are three basic themes or sections utilized in Experiment #1. The themes/sections move from heroic to the contemporary and culminate in a recapitulation of the hero theme. An eighth-note ostinato statement acts as a recurring motif connecting each section. In an attempt to explain spatial dimentions, I created an 18-minute video presentation titled “Dimensions Unfurled†exposing some initial fallacies of common thought, which can be seen on YouTube. All of the music for the above-mentioned video is original. There are two trumpet duets in the section that depicts a hypercube net folding into a hypercube model, starting at 13’20†and 14’51, respectively. Both duets are published in a collection titled “Fifteen-Course Dinner for Two†(available through Gilded Music Press). The two duets share thematic material, and are combined and greatly expanded for this present major six-minute work for brass quintet, “Building a Hypercubeâ€. The first short duet, “Drawing a Hypercube Netâ€, is presented as the quintet’s introduction, quite faithfully to the original, shared through five parts with harmonic expansion. The material from the second duet is essentially unadulterated starting at measure 27, spanning through measure 70 (up to letter D). From there, the development of thematic material is extensive and interesting, morphing into Escher-types of additional themes and melodies, many of which overlap and intertwine in a fascinatingly complex manner. This unsettling compositional style is indicative of years of profound pondering to fathom the mysterious matter of the fourth spatial dimension. Musically the piece is motivically and thematically unified. All the parts share in the rhythmic complexity fitting for the ponderous topic. The form is roughly sonata form with an introduction and coda, though the recapitulation (Del Segno) occurs in its original key. The majority of the piece (about three minutes, almost exactly half) is the symbolically explorative development section, from D to O. A point of interest: in spite of the piece’s high harmonic rhythm, the introduction is diatonically modal (G Mixolydian). The exposition, after a brief building transition, shifts to the relative D Dorian mode. The lengthy development section shifts tonal centers throughout, visiting various major and minor keys. Beginning at letter O, modality returns for a smooth transition into the recapitulation. The piece ends with an exhilarating coda.

SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. I wrote this piece for an assignment in 2023 and it turned out to be quite a fun composition. Initially, I wanted to write something that is fun, upbeat, and in a jazzy style. The main theme comes after the short intro section and this idea returns throughout the composition in a rondo form where other sections are heard in-between the main theme.As this was my first time writing for brass quintet, there was a lot to learn about each instrument to ensure that everything was playable and sounded good together. Writing this composition as well as having it performed and recorded taught me a lot about writing for brass quintet and there are many things that I would do differently if I wrote this piece again.As for the name, there is a long story behind how I came up with it which I won’t get in to but the word ‘Zank’ is German for an angry argument and the word ‘Zippity’ is a made-up word that I thought sounded fun with Zank. Sometimes titles aren’t as deep as they seem to be!

He and his wife Clara rented a pedal-board piano, which is an upright grand piano with an organ-like pedal-board played by the performer's feet primarily for the bass line. Thus, organ works could be practiced on this now mostly extinct instrument. He and Clara spent many hours practicing the revered organ works of Bach on this instrument.Robert Coulter has marvelously arranged these little-known works for Brass Quintet, suitable for advanced performers. Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Free Lance was composed in 1906, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 64.

I had an image of a man from Barcelona marching hysterically on a parade ground (1st section) and then the piece morphed into another man having an equally hilarious dance lesson on Strictly Come Dancing (2nd section) (John Seargent?) The main problem I have is packaging this number - is it a March?, Is it a Waltz?, Is it Novelty Piano? Is it Classical? It even has some Ragtime suggestions. This could be my publishers nightmare... I know? It's Super-marltz Anyway The thing is now born and off it went. (deliberate mixing of tenses).

(‘Unlucky’, or ‘Evil Star’) contains some brutally unfriendly harmony, and an unwary listener would be apt to place some passages among the works of the twentieth century's most important innovators. Open tritones, whole-tone harmony, augmented triads over a pedal and a particularly violent dissonance before the organ-like closing section, create a continuous tension. Small wonder that Liszt spoke of his musical language not being understood in his lifetime! This version, which has been adapted for Brass Quintet, especially captures the continuous tension, and brings an even more organ-like sound to the closing section of the piece.
