I have no idea how (or why) I wrote this piece. It happened quite quickly and flowed from my fingers more than my head (or heart). I had an image of a man from Barcelona marching hysterically on a parade ground (1st section) and then the piece morphed into another man having an equally hilarious dance lesson on Strictly Come Dancing (2nd section) (John Seargent?) The main problem I have is packaging this number - is it a March?, Is it a Waltz?, Is it Novelty Piano? Is it Classical? It even has some Ragtime suggestions. This could be my publishers nightmare... I know? It's Super-marltz Anyway The thing is now born and off it went. (deliberate mixing of tenses).

As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche.Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.

Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796864). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved keyboard works. Re-imagined for brass quintet, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The five instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments add a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these brass instruments, which obviously wasn’t an issue in the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students,or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert,perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). This piece was inspired by a post-concert reception with the Sioux City Symphony to which all musicians, season ticket holders, and other select guests were invited. As I found a place to sit down and geek out with some fellow trumpeters, a group of concertgoers began to gather at the adjacent table. Each guest that joined that animated group added more character until they had spilled over into our small gathering. Their conversations also spilled over, including a couple of mild warnings about one final guest who would be joining us, who had already had just a bit too much to drink. Of course, she sat by me—a seasoned Brit with an easy-going love of life. During the course of the evening, several pairs of glasses made their way out of her purse and onto her head. Her friend asked me to take her picture and send it to her. That dignified portrait, textured and filtered with color highlights, became the cover to this work. “Concertgoers†is a musical soundtrack to that memorable evening with the unforgettable group of concertgoers. It begins with the motivic intro in the horn that becomes the main melodic content throughout the work which repeats in allusion to concertgoers joining the festivities one by one until the party blooms in full. Quirky and fun, this piece paints a fitting aural picture of the cacophonous reception and varied chatter of the evening. The use of chromaticism provides much of the quirkiness, along with the use of mixed meter for some of the varieties of that night of entertainment. These modern compositional techniques challenge a good college-level quintet, though it is accessible to the musicians and listenable to the average concertgoer. To program it on a brass quintet concert or recital aptly tips the hat in acknowledgement of the audience, as it is a dedicated piece just for them!

I wrote this piece for an assignment in 2023 and it turned out to be quite a fun composition. Initially, I wanted to write something that is fun, upbeat, and in a jazzy style. Similar to the music from the game Mario Kart by Nintendo. The main theme comes after the short intro section and this idea returns throughout the composition in a rondo form where other sections are heard in-between the main theme.As this was my first time writing for brass quintet, there was a lot to learn about each instrument to ensure that everything was playable and sounded good together. Writing this composition as well as having it performed and recorded taught me a lot about writing for brass quintet and there are many things that I would do differently if I wrote this piece again.As for the name, there is a long story behind how I came up with it which I won’t get in to but the word ‘Zank’ is German for an angry argument and the word ‘Zippity’ is a made-up word that I thought sounded fun with Zank. Sometimes titles aren’t as deep as they seem to be!

Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

Difficult. “Fugue for Brass Quintet†was composed in the fall of 2021 as a Christmas gift for Laurence Wagner, the number one fan of Gilded Music Press and Dr. Thrower’s compositions. Straying from Dr. Thrower’s customary programmatic titles and aural depictions, this five-minute fugue is absolute music. The subject (trumpet 1, measures 1-8) and countersubject (trumpet 1, measures 9-16) are present in some form—including inversions, augmentations, fragmentations, juxtapositions, and sequences—throughout the entire work. It would benefit the performers to analyze the material to some degree of detail to better bring out the important motifs. The modulations wander into a wide variety of keys, though there are no notated key changes due to the rapid harmonic rhythm. The first trumpet part extends to high D, in concert pitch toward the end of the fugue. It is recommended that the player of this part switch to a smaller instrument and transpose the ending. The horn part also reaches a professional level high range, to a written B-flat.
