From Massenet’s 1885 opera, Le Cid, these three movements are from his popular orchestral concert ballet suite of Spanish dances and showcase the technical and interpretative capabilities of brass quintet performers. Of the ten dances in the orchestral ballet suite, Castillane, Andalouse, and Catalane have been arranged to feature quintet members in solo roles with brilliant scoring and hauntingly beautiful melodic settings. The arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts included and optional flugelhorns used in the Andalouse movement, horn in F, trombone, and tuba. The Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1 beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for Brass Quintet was compiled by Respighi as a Piano transcription in 1917 and is based on a Renaissance collection of works for Lute by Molinaro, Galilei (father of the famous Galileo), and two other anonymous composers from that era. The four movements are titled: 1. Simone Molinaro, 1599 2. Vincenzo Galilei, 1550's 3. Villanella (anonymous late 16th century) 4. Passo mezzo e mascherada (anonymous, late 16th century) This 16-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers and a joy to perform.

Suite No. 4 for Brass Quintet (HMV 429) has a dramatic introductory fugue, followed by the four dances that traditionally comprised such suites (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue). Georg Friedrich Händel wrote 22 keyboard suites over his lifetime, primarily in his younger years. Not all the suites lend themselves to brass performance, but this one is perfectly suited for such treatment. This arrangement balances the five voices or the quintet evenly, and makes for a wonderful ensemble experience. This edition includes the ornaments, tempos and articulations that convey the spirit of the Baroque. Quintets can follow traditional Baroque terraced dynamics or use a more contemporary approach, as suits their own style. Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

Published by William Ortiz (A0.1514884). “Sandungueo”, for Brass Quintet, uses Caribbean and Hip-Hop dance motives to create a lively and energetic dancescape. The opening fragmented “cencerro” and reggaeton rhythmic motive proclaimed is significant in that it introduces the works essence. “Sandungueo” is a style of dance and party music associated with reggaeton. This “cencerro” and “guaguanco” tumbao motives return throughout the piece in various guises and changes of tonality. The piece emulates a jazz ensemble where there are sections in which the instruments are called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo or vamp. Latin and Hip-Hop rhythmic motives are prominent and integral to the work. This piece is a reworking of the second movement of my “Quinteto de Metales”.
