Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man. Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments. Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli. These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer. Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. In anticipation of the passing of 50 more years, with rousing celebrations sure to be planned and executed in every state of the Union, in every form of entertainment and festivity imaginable, this rousing patriotic composition is my heartfelt contribution.The work is offered early to allow any performing quintet to acquire the music in plenty of time to work it up for concerts, recitals, ceremonies, and festivities of all kinds throughout the year.The music itself elicits a wide range of emotions and images from throughout the two and a half centuries of America’s history. In the compositional process, I certainly had my own images circulating through my mind. It is encouraged that the performers tell their own story of America as they perform. If technical means are available, a video presentation to accompany the music would be superb!America’s 250th, Op. 142, for brass quintet was started 23 Aug 2022 and completed 11 Nov 2023 on Veterans Day in Pearl Harbor, having traveled that day on a plane from Tokyo full of Japanese. Tin Pan Alley composer Jean Schwartz' "Hello Central, Give Me No Man's Land" was written toward the end of World War I (in 1918). A change from the usually optimistic patriotism of wartime Tin Pan Alley songs, this one is very wistful, almost bleak. The lyrics of the original depict a young girl trying to put a call through to her father in no man's land. In an informal concert setting, this song presents a nice contrast with circus march, Dixieland, or other upbeat music. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Swing Along! by Will Marion Cook, prominent African-American in Music Theater, composer, conductor, and violinist, combines Cakewalk style with classical music techniques to create an entertaining and memorable work from the early 20th century now arranged for a brass quintet of two trumpets or cornets in B-flat, horn in F (alternate flugelhorn part provided), trombone and tuba. The recording is of the complete edition. Cook was a key figure in American music from the 1890s to the 1920s. His Swing Along! was written for a theater production in 1903 combining Black folk music with classical music techniques and became a popular standard with choruses and glee clubs. A violin virtuoso, he studied at Oberlin College, Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's National Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. He devoted his career to Black musical comedies and was instrumental in showcasing his Southern Syncopated Orchestrat throughout the Unites States and Europe, featuring New Orleans clarinetist Sidney Bechet. Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation. Always looking to improve his compositional capabilities, Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. My Ragtime Baby was the 1898 mega hit featured in the Sousa Band European 1900 tour that introduced European audiences to American Ragtime. Fred Stone was a prominent African-American composer and conductor in the early Ragtime movement. The rag is arranged for two B-flat trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba.
