Will Corbin #1039660. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460761). Billie Holiday first recorded this song in 1941 (and a couple more times after that, in different settings). As the story goes, it was inspired when Holiday's mother refused her a loan with the words, God bless the child that's got his own. She and frequent collaborator Arthur Herzog Jr. then put the song together in 20. Or so the story goes. Whatever the case, this classic anthem, covered by just about every singer born since then, is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It also helped win a Grammy for Album of the Year for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1968. They also performed it at Woodstock. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba (featuring the trombonist in the role of lead BS&T singer David Clayton-Thomas), is based on their treatment of Holiday's soulful tune.

In lyrics by French poet and playwright Émile Blémont (1839-1927), Jeannette and Isabelle are shepherdesses who, upon discovering the baby Jesus and his mother in a stable, run to a nearby village to tell the inhabitants, who are urged to come quietly and whisper softly, so as not to disturb the baby sleeping peacefully in a manger. In Provence today, as in previous generations, torches remain a Christmas tradition, as on Christmas Eve children dress up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass while singing the carol.The melody on which this arrangement is based may date to as early as the 14th century — not as a sacred song, but as a lively dance. French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) used the melody for a drinking song in a 1672 revival of a comedy by the French playwright Molière. As a father, similar memories with my children are among my warmest. This three-and-a-half-minute piece of music aptly tells the title’s story. The excitement leading up to the anticipated day of departure is electric! The opening fanfare-ish intro reflects this buzz well. It is followed by a quirky rhythmic section as “helpful†kids load their poorly packed bags full of unnecessary items awkwardly into the vehicle. The fanfare returns as the family hits the road at last. As the rest of the music unfolds, imagine the alphabet game, off-key songs sung at the top of everyone’s lungs, rest stops (emergency or otherwise), spilled food, car problems, drowsiness, souvenirs, car sickness, and of course ultimate arrival at planned destinations. This soundtrack to a fun part of life can be anyone’s road trip! Work on this composition began on September 19, 2021 as a thoroughly sketched out fanfare in my manuscript notebook during a church youth activity in a park. It remained in that state until I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022 and was confined to a hotel room for a week. There, I entered this sketch into the computer, along with a dozen others. Throughout the summer, all of these works received some attention, but this one more than the rest. Much of the final work on “Road Trip†took place during a trip to Philadelphia.

The video elicited an atonal compositional style to underscore the hustle and chaos of a city as enormous as Tokyo, but with a lovely view of the Bay about midway through the work.Petite Wave was composed to accompany a time lapse hanging of a three-panel canvas print of the woodcut art “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. This art was featured on the cover of Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” when it was published in 1905, prompting a quote from “La Mer.”Fast Food to Fitness aurally illustrates a pan of nine fast food ads on a sheet. When my ten-year-old started rolling the base of a snowman, I whipped out my cell phone and started a time lapse video. Mom came out and built her own, armed with a spray bottle of colored water. The two snowmen turned blue in the cold and lived happily together for a couple of days.Autumn Fuji Puzzle undersores tightly crafted moments of puzzle-working and deconstruction.Outing in Japan was crafted to highlight key moments of a time lapse, running errands in northwest Tokyo. Many subtle and obvious moments in this work aurally augment visually stimulating moments, including blinking turn signals, passing traffic, turns, vehicle approaches, parking at destinations, and many more.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158388). My wife’s from-scratch cinnamon rolls are famous throughout our community—especially among our children’s circle of friends. While enjoying a socially-distanced church service at home on Easter Sunday, there was a batch of those butterfly-inducing cinnamon rolls baking in the new oven. They filled the home with an exquisite aromatic delight. Then the magic motif chimed: “The food is done!†I happened to have my composition notebook with me, and the little four-note tune inspired this composition. It just naturally took me in some happy musical directions, and within a minute or two, the melodic content, replete with fun-filled, muted second-trumpet echoes, was scrawled down. The next day, the music was entered into the computer. It is interesting that I gave the horn the cliché off-beats that all hornists know and love so well. Funny, I usually pride myself on writing for horn as an equal musical instrument; however, this fun, happy melody just demanded an “um-pah†accompaniment. Hopefully there is enough variety to keep the part fun to play. It helps that the piece is only two minutes and something long. The transition into the B section almost wrote itself, modulating to the relative minor. There I paused briefly, wondering how to treat a minor section in such an exuberant piece. Oh, but inspiration continued to flow, and I resumed writing in earnest with a mischievous smile! This section beautifully portrays a naughty, sneaky kid tiptoeing into the kitchen for another cinnamon roll—forbidden until after dinner! The listener can hear the kid’s nervous fluttering heart, and moments of pulling his hand back in startled impishness, and even shuddering as he looks fearfully over his shoulder. At the end of the B section, he gets caught! Witnessing that low-hanging head and puppy dog eyes, mommy finds that she can’t scold the lad too severely. “After dinner, little one…†she reprimands with an understanding grin. The jubilant melody returns to round out the work’s ternary ABA form, though this time with a very sticky Ives-esque climax, reminiscent of a gooey cinnamon roll mess. Too enjoyable to be bothered by prospects of cleaning up, the music shrugs it off with flippant ragtime syncopations, and ends with the “hic-burp†of a very satisfied tummy.

This arrangement for brass quintet, is based on a tune that is often used for the lyrics, written by the German composer, Conrad Kocher, in 1836. The melody was modified by William Chatterton Dix in 1859, for a hymn titled As With Gladness Men Of Old, hence the tune is often identified in hymnals as DIX. Though there are several other hymn tunes that can be used with the text, this arrangement also uses a modern setting by Donnalynn Grunewald (2013) in triple meter. Folliott S. Pierpoint was an English teacher and poet. The words to For the Beauty of the Earth were written in 1864. The marriage of the text with the melody by Kocher/Dix is credited to an English organist, William H. Monk in 1861. The popularity of the hymn is due partly to the aptness of the text to Thanksgiving celebrations, thus assuring in annual performance. Not only do the words express thanks for the world in which we live, but it also includes thanks for family and friends, brother, sister, parent, child. Friends on earth and friends above. Also worthy of note is the universality of the sentiment, expressed in a way that can be embraced by people of any religion. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble and the Polished Brass quintet in Cincinnati, OH. This arrangement is available for trombone quintet and brass quintet.
