Brass Quintet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1489511 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 21st Century,Chamber,Historic,Patriotic,Pop. 38 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #1066374. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489511). In 2022 the United States Air Force celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance since its creation in 1947. The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year. This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations. “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another. The lyrics are here:In my youth, I knew a manWho loved to talk about his history;Unfolded his mystery! He made me laugh about some things,And we cried about some others,And we prayed as we talked about his fallen brothers. As I grew, I though a lotAbout that man who told me stories—His woes and his glories.Something firm about his voiceInspired my skill to make a choice,To recall our defenders’ valiant sacrifice. As I wanted to be like this man,As I pondered and dreamedOf becoming what I can,I hoped to see the day, without delay,To defend, like my friend! When I took the oath,I remembered that man!How proud he would beOf his brand new Airman!I answered the call.I’ll give it my all!I will not falter! I will not fail!I’m a guardian of the tradition of honor!Fly, fight, and win! When I hold my little boy,And think of freedoms he’ll enjoy,I ponder his destiny.Yes, it’s hard when I deploy! But distance cannot destroyWhat I love; what I fight so very hard to save!Generations come and go.I wish they all could knowHow it feels to serve America. The piece was difficult for the singers, but they practiced hard, and the USAF Heartland of America Band premiered it during an Independence Day concert tour in June and July 2022, including the grand patriotic concert at Mount Rushmore.A casual comment from one of the singers lingered: “You write for singers like they’re horns!” It is true that most of my compositional experience is with brass instruments. This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition. It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global. Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1263847 Composed by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Hip-Hop,Pop,R & B,Rock. 107 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #856760. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1263847). Listen to this piece hereKids in the Corner is a piece especially composed for Thomas Smith, a family friend and former trumpeter, as a personal thank you for his generous donation to my “ Get Matt to Maryland†Rally via rally.org.With this work I aimed to explore some dance styles that don’t tend to be invited to other suites. I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. After he finished I approached him and asked him what he was playing. What he revealed to me was hilarious and this movement is homage to that occurrence.- Matthew NunesWindsor, December 2014.

Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1202140 Composed by Johanna Hall and John Hall. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary,Disco,Hip-Hop,Pop,R & B,Rock. Score and parts. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #800795. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1202140). John Hall and his then-wife Johanna had written several hit songs for John's group, Orleans.  Johanna wanted to create a song in the 1950s doo-wop style she so admired.  They did, and their composition described a certain Miss Grace who enchanted the lyricist with her “satin and perfume and lace.† The problem was: that song really did not fit in with Orleans' pop rock repertoire and image.  Meanwhile, The Tymes, a Philadelphia group, was looking for a number that might revive its popularity.  So when the Miss Grace song was suggested they decided to take it on. This was the mid-1970s, just when the honorific Ms. was growing in use.  So The Tymes changed the song's title to “Ms. Grace.† Released as a single, the song did very well in the UK, topping the chart at number one in January 1975.  Written in 4/4 time, this brass quintet version flows along at about 104 BPM.  Beginning notation instructs that eighth-note pairs are to be played so that the first note is about twice as long as the second; in other words, swing style.  It retains the original D major key, but gives most of the melody to Horn and Trombone an octave lower so that it stays within normal playing range of the group.  The nature of the song is such that there are a number of phrases that begin with off-beat pickup notes. Trumpets provide accents and flourishes and occasionally take over the melody for a few measures.  Tuba really does the most work, playing through almost the entire piece.  Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 3 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1149132). A classic arranged for Brass Quintet with optional drums. The chart features a fully written Louis style Trumpet solo. Enjoy!Hello, Dolly! is the title song of the popular 1964 musical of the same name. Louis Armstrong's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.The music and lyrics were written by Jerry Herman, who also wrote the scores for many other popular musicals including Mame and La Cage aux Folles.History:Hello, Dolly! was first sung by Carol Channing, who starred as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the original 1964 Broadway cast. In December 1963, at the behest of his manager, Louis Armstrong made a demonstration recording of Hello, Dolly! for the song's publisher to use to promote the show. Hello, Dolly! opened on January 16, 1964, at the St. James Theatre in New York City, and it quickly became a major success. The same month, Kapp Records released Armstrong's publishing demo as a commercial single. His version reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, ending the Beatles' streak of 3 chart-topping hits in a row over 14 consecutive weeks. Hello Dolly! became the most successful single of Armstrong's career, followed by a Gold-selling album of the same name.[2] The song also spent nine weeks atop the adult contemporary chart shortly after the opening of the musical. The song also made Armstrong the oldest artist ever to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 since its introduction in 1958. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 3 song of 1964, behind the Beatles' I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You.Hello, Dolly! won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1965, and Armstrong received a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance, Male. Louis Armstrong also performed the song (together with Barbra Streisand) in the popular 1969 film Hello, Dolly!.Lyndon B. Johnson, often referred to by the moniker LBJ, used the tune, rechristened Hello, Lyndon!, as a campaign song for his run in the 1964 U.S. presidential election. This version of the song was performed by Carol Channing at that year's Democratic National Convention, and a recording was made by Ed Ames for distribution at the convention. The Sunflower controversy:Hello, Dolly! became caught up in a lawsuit which could have endangered plans for filming the musical. Mack David, a composer, sued for infringement of copyright, because the first four bars of Hello, Dolly! were the same as those in the refrain of David's song Sunflower from 1948. As he recounts in his memoirs, Herman had never heard Sunflower before the lawsuit, and wanted a chance to defend himself in court, but, for the sake of those involved in the show and the potential film, he reluctantly agreed to pay a settlement before the case would have gone to trial.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461378). My dad heard this song playing as background music for some TV show. He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. That's what those weird interruptions are all about. If you need other instrumentation, I'm happy to provide. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461184). I was playing with a quintet called The Beach Brass. We live in a town with beach in its name, on the Gulf of Mexico. The other band members wanted some beach music; hence, Beach Boys. (It should be noted that the surf's up seriously here only when there's a hurricane),Cash Box called 1964's I Get Around an exciting, tailored-for-teen-tastes hot rod stomper. Who can argue with that?I don't know if this one's a hot rod stomper -- it ain't fancy in any way -- but it's just the thing if you're playing for an audience drinking beer in the sunshine. If you'd like alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. A small amuse-bouche for brass quintet, inspired by the composer rushing around an art museum to see everything he wanted to in limited time. Images flash by; emotions are recognized from across galleries, seen in a fast-moving blur through crowds of tourists, and are gone just as quickly as they took root. Paintings are seen as collections of simple strokes. This bite-sized brass quintet will whet your appetite, and is a great addition to any program!

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1458413 Composed by Spencer Williams. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Historic,Jazz. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1037395. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
