Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1136166). “Joy to the World†is, perhaps, the most widely performed Christmas carol, having appeared in nearly 1800 different hymnals since its initial publication, according to hymnary.org.The text was written by the prolific English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748) as a paraphrase of Psalm 98 and published in his Psalms of David Imitated (1719) under the heading “The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom.†The paraphrase is a Christological interpretation of the psalm — i.e., an understanding of a passage of Old Testament scripture as pointing to the Christ of the New Testament.As hymn texts and tunes were often printed separately, Watts indicated that “Joy to the World†should be sung to any Common Meter (CM) tune — a poetic meter consisting of four lines that alternate between iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with each foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Consider the CM tunes, “Amazing Grace†and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,†for example — both very different from the tune commonly associated with Watts’ text today.That tune was written, or at least arranged, by the American hymn-writer and music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and published in The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). Mason had published three earlier arrangements of the tune he named “ANTIOCH,†the first in 1836 and attributed as being “from Handel.†Although Mason was a great admirer and student of Handel's music, and though the first four notes of Mason's “ANTIOCH†are the same as the first four in the chorus “Lift up your heads†from Handel's Messiah, the similarity ends there.This arrangement for brass quintet features a “bell-toneâ€-like fanfare in the introduction, interlude, and ending; textural contrasts between high and low brass; and tasteful re-harmonizations of the tune in the middle and concluding verses.©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Ultimate Sacrifice, Op. 152, for brass quintet was started 15 Oct 2023 during the compositional process of “America’s 250th” and was completed 4 Apr 2024 with a title that has reference to both Jesus Christ and military personnel who perished in the line of duty. The scriptural reference used in the subtitle, John 15:13, though obviously referring directly to the Savior, has also been used to parallel anyone who has sacrificed their life for the good of another: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Atypical of my compositions, this does not end in the key in which it began. The depth of sacrifice herein extolled yields an unalterable loss. Duration: 4:00.Although this work had been prepared for publication, it was not released for months, which is not common for my works. On July 13, 2024, an attempt was made to assassinate the former president during a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The touching news of a hero who instinctively shielded his wife and daughter reached my ears, and I decided to fittingly dedicate this composition, “Ultimate Sacrifice” to my new hero, Corey Comperatore. May his selfless courage inspire this struggling world.

This somber, gorgeous piece of music draws tears when presented correctly, and is an extraordinarily important contribution to the brass quintet repertoire. The Jewish “feast†(or “appointed timeâ€) of trumpets, as outlined in Leviticus 23:24-25, prescribes the observance: “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.†According to the Jewish calendar, the feast of trumpets in 2001 coincided exactly with the 9-11 attacks, which could indeed be thought of as “an offering made by fire.†Effectively no servile work was done on that day throughout the attacked nation, and it has indeed become a somber type of “sabbath†to observe every year. It seemed extraordinarily appropriate—perhaps even requisite—that a somber composition with trumpets be composed for the 20th annual observance of the horrific attacks on American soil, as a “Memorial†to those lost that day, and those who since perished in the Global War on Terror. “Where were you when you first heard about the 9-11 attacks?†This common question is posed to those who were of age to comprehend what had happened in 2001. Personally, I had just listened to an emotional rendition of Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane to a Dead Princess.†Elements of that musical memory influenced this present work “Memorial.†Other sources of inspiration—whether intended or subconscious—include Samuel Barber’s heart-wrenching “Adagio for Strings,†Michael Kamen’s “Quintet†for brass, and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen.†The harmonies are thick and often dissonant, including many suspensions. The players get little rest, symbolic of the constant state of alertness of a shocked nation after being so brutally attacked. Perhaps of greatest symbolic import is the fact that there are exactly 911 notes in this composition. Because of this, it is crucial that the percussion part be performed, and that great care be taken by all performers to refrain from altering the notes or rhythms in any way. A comment on the interpretation of notation: all long notes that are tied to a staccato note on the downbeat are to be held to the downbeat and gently released, not held over.

The first four songs were premiered on 29 January 1905 in Vienna, Mahler himself conducting, together with his Kindertotenlieder (also on poems by Rückert). The set of songs was not intended as a cycle: the Lieder were originally published independently from each other, connected only by the poetry and common themes. However, they were later published together and most often have been performed together and come to be known as the Rückert-Lieder, although Mahler did set more texts of Rückert. This arrangement for brass quintet puts the singer's part for flugelhorn solo with the rest of the ensemble playing an adaption of the original's orchestra accompaniment. Using combination of mutes and open playing this arrangement archieves a differentiated sound that makes the complicated late-romantic harmony and counterpoint work really well in the stripped-down instrumentation.

When Dr. Thrower won the audition for a position in the Air Force Bands in 2011 it fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a military musician. Then he experienced an intense eight-week party known as Basic Military Training! All new Airmen go through Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, which is known as the “Gateway to the Air Force.†Two reasons he chose to enter that Gateway were his patriotism toward the great United States of America, and the great benefits and security that the Air Force offered his family. With these passions in mind, he composed a rousing musical depiction of becoming an Airman. The composition began before Basic Training, so the excitement and anticipation that he felt are exuberantly presented as heroic fanfares and patriotic gestures. However, he completed the composition after boot camp. Accordingly, in the middle of the piece there are moments of struggle and anguish that musically paint the common rigors of Basic Training. The piece ends with recapitulated heroic strains with additional flourishes, as the overall feel for this new life chapter was bound to be exhilarating and inspiring. It is beneficial for the performers to visualize the exciting and difficult journey into the military as they prepare and perform “Gateway to Freedom.†Also a play on the title, this piece was composed for and premiered by “Gateway Brass†(the brass quintet from the USAF Band of the West) in October 2011. In an attempt to explain spatial dimentions, I created an 18-minute video presentation titled “Dimensions Unfurled†exposing some initial fallacies of common thought, which can be seen on YouTube. All of the music for the above-mentioned video is original. There are two trumpet duets in the section that depicts a hypercube net folding into a hypercube model, starting at 13’20†and 14’51, respectively. Both duets are published in a collection titled “Fifteen-Course Dinner for Two†(available through Gilded Music Press). The two duets share thematic material, and are combined and greatly expanded for this present major six-minute work for brass quintet, “Building a Hypercubeâ€. The first short duet, “Drawing a Hypercube Netâ€, is presented as the quintet’s introduction, quite faithfully to the original, shared through five parts with harmonic expansion. The material from the second duet is essentially unadulterated starting at measure 27, spanning through measure 70 (up to letter D). From there, the development of thematic material is extensive and interesting, morphing into Escher-types of additional themes and melodies, many of which overlap and intertwine in a fascinatingly complex manner. This unsettling compositional style is indicative of years of profound pondering to fathom the mysterious matter of the fourth spatial dimension. Musically the piece is motivically and thematically unified. All the parts share in the rhythmic complexity fitting for the ponderous topic. The form is roughly sonata form with an introduction and coda, though the recapitulation (Del Segno) occurs in its original key. The majority of the piece (about three minutes, almost exactly half) is the symbolically explorative development section, from D to O. A point of interest: in spite of the piece’s high harmonic rhythm, the introduction is diatonically modal (G Mixolydian). The exposition, after a brief building transition, shifts to the relative D Dorian mode. The lengthy development section shifts tonal centers throughout, visiting various major and minor keys. Beginning at letter O, modality returns for a smooth transition into the recapitulation. The piece ends with an exhilarating coda.

Written in the early 20th century, its wide-spread and successful use as a song for children can possibly be attributed to the construction of the melody itself. The melody starts with two descending intervals, each a minor third. These same qualities also made Lightly Row an excellent choice as a song for use with beginning instrumentalists. One might find it difficult NOT to find this song included in most published beginning-level instrument method books since the mid-20th century. This arrangement for brass quintet permits the performers to greatly expand upon the intervals and scale passage of the original song while exploring one of the more common composition forms, theme and variation with an excursion to a shortened version of another musical form, the fugue. An attempt has been made to provide interesting and challenging material for all members of the quintet. This selection could be performed at any point in a recital. It could be one of several featured selections performed in a concert with a programmatic theme of early 20th Century folk songs; or a portion of a concert where a theme and variation selection is desired. It might also serve as an encore to any recital or concert!

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Quintet consisting of 3 Trumpets and 2 Trombones. The three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the two Trombones. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but another version is also available, if you prefer, written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers.. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. Writing for double choir predominates in the early volumes of his monumental series Musæ Sioniæ, which includes (in the second volume, 1607) the settings of In dulci jubilo and Puer natus in Bethlehem. Both represent the prominence of macaronic texts—mixing elements in Latin and the vernacular—in the Christmas repertory of the middle ages and beyond, and more generally the juxtaposition of Latin and German which was quite common practice in Lutheran churches. In Puer natus in Bethlehem the first verse of the medieval Latin hymn is then repeated in German translation (‘Ein Kind geborn zu Bethlehem’), whereafter the Christmas scene is presented in German, with a return to a mixture of Latin and German stanzas for the concluding offering of praise. This particular German translation of the Latin hymn, and the associated melody, date from the mid sixteenth century. In this lengthy work Praetorius keeps the listeners’ attention partly through the varied and witty manner in which he treats the ‘alleluia’ which ends every verse, and also through switches between triple and duple metre.

Arrangement for Brass QuintetLudwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21, was dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is not known exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found to be from 1795. The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Joseph Haydn as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but nonetheless has characteristics that mark it uniquely as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi, as well as sudden shifts in tonal centers that were uncommon for traditional symphonic form and the prominent, more independent use of wind instruments.Approx run time 7m22s.

Franz Peter Schubert (German: [fÊants ˈpeËtÉ ËˆÊƒuËbÉt]; 31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music. His major works include the art songs Erlkönig, Gretchen am Spinnrade, Ave Maria; the Trout Quintet, the unfinished Symphony No. 8 in B minor, the Great Symphony No. 9 in C major, the String Quartet No. 14 Death and the Maiden, a String Quintet, the two sets of Impromptus for solo piano, the three last piano sonatas, the Fantasia in F minor for piano four hands, the opera Fierrabras, the incidental music to the play Rosamunde, and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang.Born in the Himmelpfortgrund suburb of Vienna, Schubert showed uncommon gifts for music from an early age. His father gave him his first violin lessons and his elder brother gave him piano lessons, but Schubert soon exceeded their abilities. In 1808, at the age of eleven, he became a pupil at the Stadtkonvikt school, where he became acquainted with the orchestral music of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He left the Stadtkonvikt at the end of 1813 and returned home to live with his father, where he began studying to become a schoolteacher. Despite this, he continued his studies in composition with Antonio Salieri and still composed prolifically. In 1821, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performing member, which helped establish his name among the Viennese citizenry. He gave a concert of his works to critical acclaim in March 1828, the only time he did so in his career. He died eight months later at the age of 31, the cause officially attributed to typhoid fever, but believed by some historians to be syphilis.Appreciation of Schubert's music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased greatly in the decades following his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music and his work continues to be admired and widely performed.

Autonomous since 2000, it voted for independence in 2019, which is scheduled to be obtained before 2027. The anthem of the autonomous territory was adopted in 2018 and will most likely be adopted as the new nation’s anthem once independence is achieved. Titled “My Bougainvilleâ€, the melody is that of the Australian patriotic song “The Song of Australia†(one of four songs considered on a national plebiscite for that country’s anthem, but was rejected), the lyricist is unknown. It is not uncommon for anthems in the Pacific region to use the tune of a patriotic song or hymn of a current or former colonizer (as evidenced by the “Pacific hymn†genre of anthems); Australia governed Bougainville as a part of Papua New Guinea from after World War I to Papua New Guinea’s independence in 1975. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55thâ€â€”under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song†most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio†section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweighâ€, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March Kingâ€, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata formâ€, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march†alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55thâ€, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Foreverâ€) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th†an appropriate and even artistic concert march.

Scheherazade, also commonly Sheherazade Op. 35, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888 and based on One Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights). This orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music in general and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general. The name Scheherazade refers to the main character Scheherazade of the One Thousand and One Nights. It is one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works.
