Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 12 pages. Con Spirito Music #736195. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1136166). “Joy to the World†is, perhaps, the most widely performed Christmas carol, having appeared in nearly 1800 different hymnals since its initial publication, according to hymnary.org.The text was written by the prolific English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748) as a paraphrase of Psalm 98 and published in his Psalms of David Imitated (1719) under the heading “The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom.†The paraphrase is a Christological interpretation of the psalm — i.e., an understanding of a passage of Old Testament scripture as pointing to the Christ of the New Testament. As hymn texts and tunes were often printed separately, Watts indicated that “Joy to the World†should be sung to any Common Meter (CM) tune — a poetic meter consisting of four lines that alternate between iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with each foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Consider the CM tunes, “Amazing Grace†and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,†for example — both very different from the tune commonly associated with Watts’ text today. That tune was written, or at least arranged, by the American hymn-writer and music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and published in The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). Mason had published three earlier arrangements of the tune he named “ANTIOCH,†the first in 1836 and attributed as being “from Handel.†Although Mason was a great admirer and student of Handel's music, and though the first four notes of Mason's “ANTIOCH†are the same as the first four in the chorus “Lift up your heads†from Handel's Messiah, the similarity ends there. This arrangement for brass quintet features a “bell-toneâ€-like fanfare in the introduction, interlude, and ending; textural contrasts between high and low brass; and tasteful re-harmonizations of the tune in the middle and concluding verses.©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Score and parts. 34 pages. Con Spirito Music #6565627. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726138). Riu, Riu, Chiu is a villancico (carol) attributed to Mateo Flecha the Elder (1481-1553), a Catalonian composer and cathedral music director of the Renaissance era.Flecha (Catalan: Mateu Flexta) was well-known for his ensaladas (literally, salads - works for four or five voices - and villancicos, a type of popular song in the vernacular (common language). Orignally a secular genre, villancicos gained popularity in the second half of the 16th century as a religious song form. Devotional villancicos, which were often intended to teach and reinforce theological principles, became very popular in the 17th century and continued in popularity until the decline of the genre in the 18th-19th centuries.Riu, Riu, Chiu is a lesson in Catholic doctrine on the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the Incarnation of Christ the Redeemer. This arrangement presents four of the carol's seven verses as well as the refrain that opens the song and is repeated between verses. With engaging rhythms, clever harmonizations, and lively percussion, this arrangement is an ideal change-of-pace for any Christmas music program and a showcase for your ensemble.©Copyright 2021 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic. ?Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise,? one of the most popular hymn texts on the Ascension of Christ, was written by the great Methodist hymnist Charles Wesley (1707-1788) and published in 10 stanzas in his Hymns and Sacred Poems (1739) as ?Hymn for Ascension Day.? The ?alleluias? were added in George White's Hymns and Introits (1852). The tune most often associated with Wesley's text, ?Llanfair,? is attributed to Welsh singer Robert Williams (1781-1821). In this arrangement, elements of the tune are employed in a majestic, constantly modulating introduction before giving way to three presentations of melody ? first, straightforwardly by the full quintet; second, following a modulation down a major third, by a trio of brass; and third, following another modulation back to the original key, by the full quintet, with a short coda incorporating a flourish recalling the introduction. Especially appropriate at Ascension due to the associated text, this instrumental arrangement is also fitting as a prelude, postlude, or offertory/communion anthem at any time. ©Copyright 2016 Todd Marchand / www.ConSpiritoMusic.com

Eighteenth-centuryBaptist minister, scholar, and hymn-writer Robert Robinson(1735-1790) wrote the hymn text, ?Come Thou Fount of EveryBlessing? in 1757 at the age of 22. Inthe USA, Robinson's hymn is typically set to the tune ?Nettleton,?whose authorship is unclear. Some attribute it to printer John Wyeth, who published it in his Repositoryof Sacred Music, Part Second(1813);others attribute it to Asahel Nettletion, a popular evangelist of theearly nineteenth century who published VillageHymns(1825).However, VillageHymnscontainedtexts only and no music, so there is no evidence that Nettletonactually wrote the tune that carries his name. Suitable for high school to professional ensembles for use in concert, recital, and worship, this intermediate-level arrangement presents the tune straightforwardly tobegin, then follows with a lyrical variation in 4/4 time, a variationin 5/8, and a concluding march. Brass Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by American Folk Hymn. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian, Gospel, Spiritual, Sacred, Americana. Score, Set of Parts. 14 pages. Published by Con Spirito Music
"Down to the River to Pray" (also known as "Down in the River to Pray," "Down in the Valley to Pray," and "The Good Old Way") is a 19th-century American folk hymn variously attributed as an African-American spiritual/slave song, Appalachian song, and gospel song. In recent years, it was popularized in the 2000 motion picture, "O Brother, Where Art Thou," and by folk/bluegrass performer Alison Kraus. In this arrangement, the first three presentations, or verses, of the pentatonic tune employ simple, traditional harmony and limited instrumentation, evoking the simplicity of folk-singing style. Verse 4 is characterized by a direct key change up a fourth (from concert Eb to Ab) and more active harmonies. After a short, two-bar modulation up one more step to Bb major, the final verse begins with rising parallel harmonies under the melody in trumpet 1, and continues with more contemporary harmonies. The piece concludes with a simple "Amen"-like ending. ©2019 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?How Can I Keep From Singing?? is, perhaps, the second most well-known gospel hymn authored by Robert Lowry (1826-1899) ? the first being ?Shall We Gather at the River?? Born in Philadelphia, Lowry studied at Pennsylvania's Lewisburg (today Bucknell) University; was ordained a Baptist minister in 1854; served in churches in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey; and later returned to Lewisburg and served as chancellor. Best remembered as a writer of more than 500 gospel songs and hymns, Lowry served as editor for Biglow and Main publishing company, where he edited numerous gospel song books and hymn books. Like Horatio Spafford?s ?It Is Well With My Soul,? Lowry?s ?How Can I Keep From Singing?? (also known as ?Endless Song?) expresses confidence in the eternal promises of Christ in spite of temporal circumstances. Its first verse and refrain proclaim: "My life flows on in endless song above earth?s lamentation; I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn, that hails a new creation. (Refrain): No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that Rock I?m clinging; since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?" This intermediate-level arrangement is quick to rehearse, satisfying to play, and well-received by audiences. Suitable for high school ensembles, church and community musicians, and professionals for use in concert, recital, and worship. Ideal as a prelude or offertory/communion anthem. ©Copyright 2016 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?The Morning Trumpet,? by Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879), is a camp revival song published in 1844 in the first edition of The Sacred Harp, a shape-note hymn book compiled by White and E.J. King (1821-1844). Shape-note tunes are often predominantly pentatonic, with harmonies that emphasize stark intervals of fourths and fifths. In four-part harmony, the tune is typically in the tenor voice. This arrangement preserves the tune but harmonizes it in a more contemporary style, and features alternating calls between first and second trumpet. Includes snare drum part (optional, may be successfully performed by brass quintet alone). ©Copyright 2012 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?Were You There? is a nineteenth-century African-American spiritual that likely predates the American Civil War, and may have roots in a folk hymn known in Tennessee as ?Have You Heard How They Crucified MyLord?? It was first published in William Eleazar Barton's 1899 Old Plantation Hymns; and in 1940, it was included in the hymnal of the Episcopal Church with harmonization by C. Winfred Douglas, making it the first spiritual to be included in any major American hymnal. This arrangement evokes the call-and-response tradition of the spiritual, and features solo trumpet answered by low brass in the introduction and first stanza, solo trombone/low brass trio in the second stanza, and full ensemble in the final stanza. Although appropriate for use throughout the year, it is particularly fitting for performance on Good Friday, Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil) and Easter sunrise services. This intermediate-level arrangement is suitable for ensembles from high school to community and professional musicians. ©Copyright 2015 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?Gaudete! Christus est natus? is a medieval carol published in the 1582 collection of Finnish and Swedish sacred songs, Piae Cantiones. The carol is a song of praise comprising a two-line refrain, or burden, alternating with four-line verses. The Latin text of the burden, ?Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus ex Maria Virgine. Gaudete!? translates as ?Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary. Rejoice!? Interestingly, Piae Cantiones provides no music for the verses, but a standard tune for the verses appeared in other songbooks of the time. Although verses would typically be sung by a solo voice or unison voices, this arrangement attempts to evoke something of the medieval technique of harmonies in parallel motion on the second, third and fourth verses. ©Copyright2011 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1261270 Composed by J.L. Macbeth Bain. Arranged by Todd Marchand. 19th Century,Christian,Folk,Sacred,Traditional. 16 pages. Con Spirito Music #854340. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1261270). Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Composed by Swedish folk tune. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian, Gospel, Sacred. Score, Set of Parts. 13 pages. Published by Con Spirito Music (S0.181021). - Score,Set of Parts - Christian,Gospel,Sacred - Con Spirito Music
One of the best-loved gospel songs worldwide, ?How Great Thou Art? began as a nine-stanza hymn of praise, ?O Store Gud? (?O Great God?), written in 1885 by Swedish poet and lay minister Carl Gustav Boberg (1859?1940). In 1891 Boberg published the poem, accompanied by a Swedish folk melody, in Sanningsvittnet (Witness for the Truth), a weekly Christian journal of which he was editor. Today, the tune is commonly named ?Sanningsvittnet? in hymnals. From its Swedish origins, the text was translated to German in 1907, then to Russian in 1912. The Russian text became the basis for a translation to English by Stuart W. K. Hine (1899?1989), a British Methodist missionary who discovered it in 1931 while on mission in the Ukraine. Hine's work commonly contains four verses: the first two being a relatively close translation of stanzas by Boberg, and the latter two being original verses by Hine. Published in 1949, ?How Great Thou Art? gained great popularity in North America after George Beverly Shea began singing it in the Billy Graham evangelistic crusades in 1955. It has been named the #1 favorite hymn by respondents to various polls in both the United States and United Kingdom. ©Copyright 2013 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?On Christmas Night, On Christmas Day, Rejoice!? takes its name from lyrics of the three tunes that comprise this medley. ?On Christmas night all Christians sing? are the opening words of the Sussex Carol, a traditional English tune with words first published in 1684. English folk-song collectors Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan Williams both collected versions of the song, and Vaughan Williams published his arrangement of the tune in 1919. ?On Christmas day in the morning? are the concluding words of the refrain of the carol also known as ?I Saw Three Ships.? Like the Sussex Carol, it is a traditional English carol, and it was published by William Sandys in his 1833 work, Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern. ?Rejoice? is the imperative verb in the invitation, ?Good Christian men, rejoice,? which are the opening words to the medieval carol, ?In dulci jubilo? (?In sweet rejoicing?). John Mason Neale, an Anglican priest, scholar, and hymn-writer, wrote the familiar English translation in 1853. Quick to rehearse and fun to play, this cheerful medley evokes the joy of Christmas. Intrmediate level, suitablefor high school to professional ensembles for use in concert, recital, and worship. Samuel Augustus Ward (1848-1903), composer and organist at Grace Episcopal Church, Newark, New Jersey, composed his tune ?MTERNA? to accompany the hymn text ?O Mother Dear, Jerusalem? in 1882, and it was first published in 1892. Katherine Lee Bates (1859-1929), poet and teacher, wrote the poem ?Pikes Peak? during a visit to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1893, and it was published under the title ?America? in the church periodical, The Congregationalist, in 1893. Bates's poem, which she revised in 1904 and 1913, was first published with Ward's music in 1910 under the title ?America the Beautiful.? Samuel Ward never met Katherine Bates, having died in 1903; yet ?America the Beautiful? has become one of the best-loved American patriotic songs. This very accessible yet effective arrangement features an introductory fanfare followed by a straightforward presentation of the tune, a return of the fanfare and modulation to new key with extended harmonies, and a concluding return of the fanfare. ©Copyright 2014 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?What is This Lovely Fragrance?? (?Quelle est cette odeur agréable??) is a 17th-century French traditional Noël (carol) about the Nativity of Christ. The melody accompanying its lyrics, a folk tune, was used by John Gay (1685?1732) in his satirical work, The Beggar's Opera (1728). It is this tune to which the text, calling the shepherds to the manger, is typically set. What is this lovely fragrance wafting like to the scents of flow'rs in spring? / Shepherds, O tell us, whence such beauty, hear you not heav'nly carolling? / What is this lovely fragrance wafting like to the scents of flow'rs in spring? Celtic,Christmas,Holiday,Irish,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 14 pages. Con Spirito Music #6537373. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726136). Set to a traditional 16th-17th century Irish tune, the Irish Carol (Christmas Day is Come) is attributed to Luke Wadding (1558-1657), a Franciscan friar and historian born in Ireland who did much to strengthen the Catholic Church in Ireland and raise its profile in Rome. Although he was a prolific writer who published his own Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (1684), the so-called Irish Carol appeared in A New Garland Containing Songs for Christmas by William Devereux (1696-1771) as The Second Carol for Christmas Day. It is likely that Devereux, not Wadding, was the author of the text, which begins:Christmas Day is come; Let us prepare for mirth,Which fills the heav'ns and earth at His amazing birth.Through both thy joyous angels in strife and hurry fly,With glory and hosannas, Holy, Holy they cry.In Heav'n the church triumphant adores with all her choirs,The militant on earth with humble faith admires.Although more than one tune has been associated with Christmas Day is Come, the tune that is the basis for this arrangement is the most commonly sung today. ©Copyright 2021 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic. ?American Patrol? is the best-known work by Frank White (F.W.) Meacham (1856?1909), an arranger and composer associated with Tin Pan Alley, the home of New York City-based songwriters and music publishers who dominated the popular music of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. ?American Patrol? incorporates both original musical themes by Meacham and melodies from patriotic songs of the era such as ?Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean? and ?Dixie.? The ?patrol? format was popular in the latter 19th century, and was intended to represent a military band approaching, passing, and fading into the distance. It typically included an introduction played pianissimo or piano, in imitation of bugle calls or drums, then themes played progressively louder until a recapitulation of the first theme(s), gradually fading away and finishing softly, like the march began. Published for piano in 1885 and for wind band in 1891, ?American Patrol? became and remained popular through World War I and II, enjoying renewed popularity during WWII and beyond thanks to a swing arrangement for Glenn Miller's band by Jerry Gray. ©Copyright 2013 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

Although ?America? (aka ?My Country, ?Tis of Thee?) has been a beloved anthem in the US for nearly two centuries, its origin is not American at all, and it is not unique to America as a patriotic song. Sometimes attributed to British writer/musician Henry Carey (c. 1685-1743), the tune likely dates to the 17th century or earlier and has also been attributed to the English composer John Bull, the French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully, and even a Swiss military melody. It was published in England in the 1744 tune book, Thesaurus Musicus, and it gained immediate and lasting popularity when, with the words ?God Save the King,? it was performed in September 1745 at London's Drury Lane and Covent Garden theaters in support of King George II. Eventually, the tune became the national anthem not only of Britain, but of several other nations, including Denmark, Prussia, and Liechtenstein. After the American colonies became independent from England, a variety of new patriotic texts were written to be sung to the tune. In 1831, Samuel F. Smith, a student at Massachusetts? Andover Theological Seminary, wrote the lyrics today known as ?My Country, ?Tis of Thee.? Smith's words and the traditional tune were one of several unofficial national anthems of the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This attractively harmonized, contemporary setting of a long-lived traditional tune will be a favorite of both performers and listeners at patriotic observances. ©Copyright 2015, revised 2020 Todd Marchand / www.ConSpiritoMusic.com

?Angels We Have Heard on High? (?Gloria?) is a Christmas carol based on an 18th-century French noel, ?Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes.? The well-known English-language version of the carol with text by James Chadwick (1813-1882) retains the tune of the French noel, though Chadwick?s text is a largely original adaptation, with parts only loosely translated from the French. The carol commemorates the birth of Jesus as told in the Gospel of St. Luke, and its chorus recalls the ?multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ?Glory to God in the highest?.?? (Luke 2:13-14). The signature feature of the chorus is a rising and falling melisma on the ?o? vowel of ?Gloria? ? thus, the tune is often ascribed the name ?Gloria.? Its familiar harmonization was written by the American organist and composer Edward Shippen Barnes (1887-1958) in 1937. In this festive arrangement, the tune and refrain are presented multiple times in a variety of keys, harmonizations, and orchestration. ©Copyright 2017 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

Here's a fun-to-play, entertaining arrangement of one of the best-known winter holiday tunes. Published in 1857 as ?One Horse Open Sleigh? and re-titled ?Jingle Bells, or the One Horse Open Sleigh? in 1859, James Lord Pierpont's (1822-1893) composition has since become a Christmas-time favorite. This arrangement begins with a ballad-like statement of the verse, followed by verse-chorus-verse in a Latin/pop style and concluding with a swing chorus and Ellington ending. ©Copyright2012 Todd Marchand / www.ConSpiritoMusic.com
