Didn't You Believe, by master Broadway composer Jerome Kern, is a lovely song. It's a little unusual in that fairly simple melodic content is dramatically punctuated by short multiple voice frills. Our arrangement of this piece shares melodic responsibilities between the French horn, trombone, and to a lesser extent, first trumpet. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Performance time is approximately 2:50. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459167). A song doesn't get more traveled than this one. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. It's a pain to track down on an English system, and the software didn't produce the umlaut A the way it was supposed to. Use your imagination.If you've ever been to the Munich (Munchen, auch mit umlaut) Oktoberfest, this song is everywhere (as it is with most Oktoberfest celebrations everywhere). But it's always a part of the program at the Munich Hofbrauhaus.The song was written in Berlin in 1935. Wilhelm Wiga Gabriel wrote other songs as well, mostly for the Nazis. This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. The sunshine of the title was his wife, Syreeta Wright, who married him in 1970. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414066). So the legend goes: Edward Eugene Bagley is on a train, touring with his family band from some Vermont backwater, when he composed National Emblem. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.

During the Enlightenment, society as well as the arts was affected. Public concerts became popular and music was able to be enjoyed by anyone not just the upper class. Gluck himself made changes to the opera during the early classical period. Gluck’s goal was to write music that was simple yet beautiful – he didn’t want to take away from the drama of the opera. He achieved this goal in one of his most famous operas Orfeo ed Euridice and his simplistic musical style can be seen in the aria Che faro senza Euridice.Herewith then a brass quintet rendition thereof with the French horn as solo instrument for your enjoyment.

This work is by Paul Gerhardt, a little-known contemporary of Bach and Handel. In the third verse, I have added a 'descant part' for trumpet 1. It briefly goes to a high D, twice, but I didn't want to lose the brightness of a baroque sound. Parts are supplied for Trumpet 1 in Eb Trumpet 2 Alternative BbTrumpet for part 1, French Horn Trombone Tuba additional parts for Tenor Horn and Treble clef trombone & Eb Bass.

It's a bit high, so feel free to take things down an octave, write your own, or play the changes as you see fit!

In an interview with Sue Lawley in 1992, Clapton said of the song, There is a song that I’ve written for a movie, but in actual fact it was in the back of my head but it didn’t really have a reason for being until I was scoring this movie which I did a little while ago and then it sort of had a reason to be. And it is a little ambiguous because it could be taken to be about Conor but it also is meant to be part of the film. Conor, Clapton's four-year-old son, fell from a window of a 53rd-floor New York apartment owned by his mother's friend on March 20, 1991. Clapton arrived at the apartment shortly after the accident. The song was Clapton's best-selling single in the United States and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It won three Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Tears in Heaven 362nd on the magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.This arrangement is for brass quintet. The Liberty Bell March for Brass Quintet by John Philip Sousa Arranged by Jari Villanueva Score 2 Trumpets in Bb Horn in F (Eb Alto Horn) Trombone (Baritone TC) Tuba Drums (optional) Substitute parts provided It may be associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus but "The Liberty Bell" was written for Sousa's unfinished operetta The Devil's Deputy in 1893. Financing for the show fell through and shortly afterwards, Sousa and his band manager George Hinton attended the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. As they watched the spectacle "America", in which a backdrop depicting the Liberty Bell was lowered, Hinton suggested "The Liberty Bell" as the title of Sousa's recently completed march. Coincidentally, Sousa received a letter from his wife, saying their son had marched in a parade in honor of the Liberty Bell which had been on a nation-wide tour. Sousa agreed. He sold "The Liberty Bell" to the John Church Company for publication, and it was an immediate success. The origin of the tune comes from the time Sousa heard Marcella Lindh, one of his soprano soloists, whistling a tune of her own creation. Sousa couldn?t get the melody out of his head and asked his soprano if he might use it in a march. She agreed, but didn?t know that her tune had been used until several years later when she happened to hear a European band perform the march.
