Drunken Sailor (letteralmente: Marinaio ubriaco) è un canto marinaresco, conosciuto anche come What Shall We Do with a/the Drunken Sailor? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un/il marinaio ubriaco?).Questo canto di lavoro nacque per accompagnare certi lavori a bordo di velieri, specialmente quelli che richiedevano un passo svelto e vivace. Si pensa che il canto risalga ai primi del XIX secolo o anche prima, in un periodo nel quale le ciurme delle barche, specialmente quelle dei vascelli militari, erano sufficientemente numerose da poter tirare una corda semplicemente marciando lungo il ponte. Con l'avvento delle navi postali e i clipper e le loro ciurme ridotte, che richiedevano differenti metodi di lavoro, l'uso di questo canto è progressivamente scemato o è passato all'accompagnamento di lavori meno faticosi.Drunken Sailor è poi divenuta una canzone popolare fra i non-marinai nel XX secolo, fino a essere considerata uno dei canti marinareschi più conosciuti dal pubblico. Numerosi artisti ne hanno proposto la loro versione in registrazioni e/o esibizioni e i media hanno contribuito alla sua popolarità . Anche se non esiste una versione univoca del testo, esso contiene costantemente la domanda What shall we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un marinaio ubriaco, la mattina presto?). In alcune versioni, i versi successivi suggeriscono metodi per alleviare la sbornia o punire il marinaio ubriaco. Altre versioni, invece, prevedono il susseguirsi di ulteriori domande e risposte relative ad altri personaggi.

Mvt.3 Rex tremundae summary A descending melody composed of dotted notes is played by to announce the Rex tremendae majestatis (King of tremendous majesty, i.e., God), who is called by powerful cries on the syllable Rex during the pauses. For a surprising effect, the Rex syllables fall on the second beats of the measures, even though this is the weak beat. The melodies adoptthe dotted rhythm, forming what Wolff calls baroque music's form of topos of the homage to the sovereign,or, more simply put, that this musical style is a standard form of salute to royalty, or, in this case, divinity. This movement consists of only 22 measures, but this short stretch is rich in variation: homophonic writing and contrapuntal passages alternate many times and finish on a quasi-unaccompanied choral cadence, landing on an open D chord (as seen previously in the Kyrie). Excellent fun for eery player.

When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style.The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

The accompaniment then ceases , and trumpet 1 and tbn enter softly and sotto voce, (Voca me cum benedictis ()Call upon me with the blessed) with an arpeggiated accompaniment on horn and trumpet 2. Finally, in the following stanza (Oro supplex et acclinis), there is a striking modulation from G minor to Gb minor. This music suits the brass quintet. This 3-movement brass quintet is inspired by Latin-American music, especially salsa music. The bass lines of the outer movements are very typical of salsa (in 4/4, 2 dotted quarters followed by a quarter that is tied into the next, similar measure), which creates a floating, sensuous music, with a very subtle downbeat. The piece is thus best suited to professionals or serious amateurs ready to face the challenges of Latin rhythms. The third movement is especially challenging, as it plays with the impression that the salsa bass can give, when heard at a distance, that the music is in triple meter. The second movement is a straightforward slow dance in 3/2. Duration: 10 minutes, 39 seconds.
