As a prelude to a worship service it will prepare the hearts of your parishioners to hear the Word of God. Beginning with an ascending chromatic theme, Pachelbel crafts a six-minute work in three parts. In the second part he inverts the theme. In the third part he introduces a third theme and then combines it with the first two. Although this work is not as well-known as the Canon in D Major, it is equally as skillful and shows that Pachelbel was not only a master of the Baroque, but also of Renaissance counterpoint. Meaning to search out, ricercari are typically a musical exploration of a particular motif, in which each section oof the work begins imitatively, usually in a variation form. This imitative, contrapuntal musical form eventually developed into the fugue.

It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s for use in the Sistine Chapel. Originally composed for two choirs (one of 5 voices, one of 4 voices) this adaptation has been arranged for horn quintet.Performance Notes:Optional repeat included to match the original 5 verses. Without the accompanying lyrics, minor liberties have been taken with the repeated rhythms beginning each verse. Interpretation adapted from the 1824 manuscript by Anton Friedrich Justus Thibaut.
