Jmsgu3 #1051393. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1473676). The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ compositions. It follows a typical North German structure with three main sections - a free opening (toccata), a fugal section (fugue), and a short free closing section. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but it's believed to have been written before 1708. There is no surviving autograph manuscript. The oldest known source is an undated copy by Johannes Ringk, a student of one of Bach's pupils. It was first published in 1833 through the efforts of composer Felix Mendelssohn during the early Bach Revival period. It gained widespread recognition after being featured in Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, which Leopold Stokowski adapted for orchestra. The piece has become strongly associated with horror films and Gothic imagery in Western culture. The Toccata begins with dramatic flourishes and arpeggios, showcasing the organist's virtuosity. The fugue is characterized by overlapping repetitions of the central theme in different melodic lines. It employs simple triadic harmony but includes some unexpected elements, such as a C minor subject entry and a solo pedal statement.

Difficult. “Fugue for Brass Quintet†was composed in the fall of 2021 as a Christmas gift for Laurence Wagner, the number one fan of Gilded Music Press and Dr. Thrower’s compositions. Straying from Dr. Thrower’s customary programmatic titles and aural depictions, this five-minute fugue is absolute music. The subject (trumpet 1, measures 1-8) and countersubject (trumpet 1, measures 9-16) are present in some form—including inversions, augmentations, fragmentations, juxtapositions, and sequences—throughout the entire work. It would benefit the performers to analyze the material to some degree of detail to better bring out the important motifs. The modulations wander into a wide variety of keys, though there are no notated key changes due to the rapid harmonic rhythm. The first trumpet part extends to high D, in concert pitch toward the end of the fugue. It is recommended that the player of this part switch to a smaller instrument and transpose the ending. The horn part also reaches a professional level high range, to a written B-flat.

Suite No. 4 for Brass Quintet (HMV 429) has a dramatic introductory fugue, followed by the four dances that traditionally comprised such suites (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue). Georg Friedrich Händel wrote 22 keyboard suites over his lifetime, primarily in his younger years. Not all the suites lend themselves to brass performance, but this one is perfectly suited for such treatment. This arrangement balances the five voices or the quintet evenly, and makes for a wonderful ensemble experience. This edition includes the ornaments, tempos and articulations that convey the spirit of the Baroque. Quintets can follow traditional Baroque terraced dynamics or use a more contemporary approach, as suits their own style. The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

The first movement is a stately allegro, the second is slow and expressive, and the finale is a driving 6/8 throughout. The outer movements have sections of fugue! Please give a listen to the posted MP3. I'm sure that professional or advanced amateur quintets will want to download it, and will enjoy playing it. Duration: 9 minutes, 53 seconds.

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – like the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the guards singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears; it catches the listener off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First, Johann Sebastian Bach may be the greatest composer in music history. Indeed, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. People are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. His most famous vocal works seem to include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most notable are the St. John Passion and, indeed, the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and, above all, composers. Consequently, he first of all pursued a career as a church organist. As a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. He worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen for a while. Here, he probably developed his organ style and, likewise, his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here, he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his unique style. This new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach's works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â
